Text from Pages 1 - 220 of the 1971 volume:

Between the covers of this book lay all the minor, routine moments and trivial, insignificant incidents that constitute, collectively, the patterns of daily life: glimpses that engage a fleeting image: a briefly remembered flush of triumph, or the still-bitter memory of humiliation and defeat. A history of three years of life, with all their abortive sorrows and short-winded elations trans- mitting. through pictures, aspirations and desires difficult to subdue, impossible to quench, indifferent to the passage of time. Essentially, it is a compromise with time, for only by returning periodically to the past are we allowed to live complacently in the present ... It is the return to the lesson of the past that enables us to unsnarl the tangled skein of existence, and begin again, constructing. developing and dismantling in an unend- school life The people learn, unlearn, learn, a builder, a wrecker, a builder, a juggler of shifting puppets. 9 As we are now, you soon shall be, As you are now, so once were we. 11 V 13 14 And the seasons they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down We're captive on the carousel of time We can't return we can only look behind From where we came And go round and round, and round In the circle game. 15 16 17 The future, the past, and the present live on in thoughts and joys which sleep, but cannot die. Folded within their own eternity. 19 20 The cycle of life demands to be repeated. You were made by your parents; you must make in return. 22 24 Life is an intricate pattern of events, an endless series of conflicts which give shape and meaning to our existences. 25 A teacher who can arouse a feeling for one single good action, for one single good poem, accomplishes more than he who fills our memory with rows on rows of natural objects, classified with name and form. r Mr. William Hauser Mr. Howard Groveman Mrs. Gcorgiann Paruch Vice President Mr. Salvatore L. DiGiovanna Oceanside Board of Education Mr. John E. Vandcrmosten President Mr. Thomas DiDominica Martin Bernstein. Treasurer Counsel Oceanside District Administration Mr. Victor Leccese A ssistanf Superintendent of Schools 28 Dr. William Tucker Superintendent of Schools Mr. Chester Tuthill Business Manager Boris Hirschhorn Director of Pupil Personnel Services Dr. Elliott Landon Assistant to the Superintendent for Personnel The seventies have brought with them stress and strain, perhaps, more than any other age. Yet this is the age into which you are being graduated. What will you find? How will you react? How shall we all fare? There is no doubt but that your formal education excels that of previous graduating classes. You have had a choice of far more courses than any other previous group of graduates. However, you have also been presented with many more choices of personal dilemma or commitment than any other Oceanside Seniors. You have taken your stands and made your choices on many issues. Unfortunately, the stress and struggle will not end on June 27. As you enter into business, the armed forces, phases of continuing education and adulthood, the stress and struggle will intensify. Then will come the test, not a state examination. Have you been truly educated? Has your education at Ocean-side High School brought you to the ideal expounded by William Shakespeare, “To thine ownself be true”? As principal 1 sincerely hope so because each morning of your life, you will have to face “The Man in the Glass . No one has ever been able to deceive himself. You alone will always see your true reflection. May you always be able to look in the mirror and say you have been true to yourself. Then “It must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man and all w ho live in the seventies will be the better for the Class of '71. However, this year's team was the first co-educational team in Oceanside's history. The spirit of the team members and the leadership of Capt. Dave Leight led to another rewarding year. Coach Thomas Fetherston hopes for improvement next year. Bowling: The Bowling team got off to a slow start but gradually picked up momentum. With the help of seniors Marty Lang (181 avg.) and Dave Noon (175 avg.) and top averaging soph. Steve Frisone (187 avg.) the pin men gained a second place in Division I. Hurt by graduation, the Sailor baseball team, led by Coach Scerbo, will have to rely on an inexperienced but determined squad to gain a playoff berth. Good pitching, led by seniors Steve Mullin and Sal Mignano, followed by junior Jeff Albert, will try to contain the hard-hitting opponents in South Shore I. Another bright spot appears to be the infield, consisting of Steve Theobald, Ronnie Marchon, and Tony Higgins. The Sailors' weakness appears to be the outfield. However, good depth gives Coach Scerbo an optimistic view of the season. J.V. Baseball: First Row: T. Rohrs. P. Siegel. M. Ebert. J. Glick, G. Williams. M. McCarthy. G. Newton. B. Krauss. R. Co-captains Tex Ritter and Warren Kaplan joined together to form both offensive and defensive supremacy. Tall Tex averaged 23 points, a county leader, and 17 rebounds per game. This, plus the dazzling ball handling and defensive maneuvers of Warren Kaplan, and the consistent play of Lou Mezzina, Jeff Albert, and Fd Meltzer gave Coach Jan another championship team. Consistency was the rule for the Sailors this season. With a well-balanced attack and bench power from “Min-utemen Senior Bob Aaron and Junior Robert Kanowitz, the Sailors were consistent all season long.
