“Administrators Must Understand the Student to Guide Him.” Mr. Stephen Poleshuk Principal Air. Poleshuk speaks to the students concerning faculty-student relationships. 18 Most teen-agers live in Oceanside High School most of the time. They have gripes ; they want changes made. Comments were made by students on the reinstitution of study halls, attendance procedures, and curriculum stagnation. No doubt some parents wondered whether or not the students' criticisms were justified; others may have wondered whether or not the articles should have been the concern of students. However, if we expect our young people to think independently as adults, they must start to do so long before they reach the voting age. This means we must accept their right to have opinions that differ from ours but we must guide them into getting all of the facts before forming their opinions. As they mature, learn more, and see how their lives are influenced by the turn of current events, teen-agers think more about citizenship problems. But whether they become participating, informed, and democratic depends to a great extent on us, their parents and teachers, and the way we guide them. Understanding the concerns of teen-agers and helping them to resolve or solve them is a big task. However, parents and teachers who honestly and fearlessly look at their own problems and make consistent, sound efforts to solve them, will be the most effective guides for our young people.
