Graduation is the culmination of twelve years of growth, a sprea4ing of branches Outward. It is the momentary end in the search for knowledge. We pause in expansion. THE SENIOR CLASS PRESENTS THE 1968 SPINDRIFT Sir Arthur Eddington, a twentieth century physicist, once paralleled man’s position in the universe to a sand castle. Unless construction continues, the sand castle will be razed by the inexorable poundings of the waves. So, if man does not continually accelerate his knowledge and extend his abilities, he, too, will be swept over by the destructive forces of the universe. Thus, man must be constantly concerned with expansion. Education to date has merely provided us with the tools for growth. It has created a foundation from which we can develop individually with the same purpose in mind. Expansion is an eternal process, but it is our generation’s unique responsibility to direct this expansion toward the improvement of mankind's condition. Poleshuk speaks to the students concerning faculty-student relationships. 18 Most teen-agers live in Oceanside High School most of the time. They have gripes ; they want changes made. Comments were made by students on the reinstitution of study halls, attendance procedures, and curriculum stagnation. No doubt some parents wondered whether or not the students' criticisms were justified; others may have wondered whether or not the articles should have been the concern of students. However, if we expect our young people to think independently as adults, they must start to do so long before they reach the voting age. This means we must accept their right to have opinions that differ from ours but we must guide them into getting all of the facts before forming their opinions. As they mature, learn more, and see how their lives are influenced by the turn of current events, teen-agers think more about citizenship problems. But whether they become participating, informed, and democratic depends to a great extent on us, their parents and teachers, and the way we guide them. Understanding the concerns of teen-agers and helping them to resolve or solve them is a big task. However, parents and teachers who honestly and fearlessly look at their own problems and make consistent, sound efforts to solve them, will be the most effective guides for our young people. Many New Programs The officers of the GENERAL ORGANIZATION, having pledged themselves to keep the G.O. moving, worked diligently to institute new programs for the betterment of OHS. With the creation of the new Student Court and a new dress code, the attitudes and opinions of the students were expressed more fully. The accomplishments were many. An assembly of interest was arranged with Thurlow Spurr and his Spurrlows entertaining through the courtesy of Chrysler Corporation. The Second Annual Homecoming attracted many graduates. A paperback exchange, a successful ski trip, an enlarged discount program, and a talent show were integral parts of the program. The G.O. was also responsible for OHS's appearance on television's It’s Academic! The Third Annual Tri-School Scholarship Bowl was held, this year with Baldwin and Long Beach. A full schedule of social events was offered. The traditional Kick-Off Dance was held, attracting 500 students. A special program of Donkey Basketball was also presented. In its community-oriented activities, the G.O. was unusually successful. It adopted a needy family for Christmas, made donations to the Oceanside District Scholarship Fund, and held a Christmas party for Senior citizens. Credit for the success of this year's General Organization must go not only to the officers and the many people who aided them, but also to Mr. Robert Sodemann, the organization’s enthusiastic and dedicated advisor. Ill You're going to tutor me in What?” “Sider Press” Highlighted Neil Negrin and Marc Kemeny, Co-Editor s-tn-Chief. Rhona Lobel and Jon Press, News Editors. This year’s SIDER PRESS was characterized by a newer, more vital editorial policy. Suggestions were made regarding curriculum, planning, and marking, as well as the social issues which challenge our society. Under the guidance of Miss Jacqueline Baker, twelve issues were published. Sider Impressions, a literary innovation, was extended to include drawings and personal impressions which augmented the value of the poetry which also appeared. Perhaps the most meaningful endeavor of the Sider Press was the attempt to uncover the why of the news rather than to simply report it. New features included book, movie, and play reviews. Satires were also printed. The use of glossy paper was found to be appreciated more by many students who felt it provided better coverage on books. This year the staff worked to fulfill this purpose, striving to create unity from diversity. Besides plowing through the basic paperwork required for any yearbook, the staff succeeded in injecting creativity. The use of student photographers made it possible to obtain truly candid shots of everyday situations in school. Sacrificing many free hours to publish this yearbook, the staff editors, with the help of advisor Mr. Thomas Barden, worked to make this yearbook a representative view of Oceanside High School. The LENS represents the yearly literary-artistic endeavor of Oceanside High School. While participants in the remaining two Sailor publications report student achievements and activities, the Lens’ contributors transcend these natural occurrences through their literary and artistic abilities. The Lens thus supplies a creative outlet for all interested Ocean-side High School students. This compilation of original poems, short stories, photographs, and artwork is produced annually under the direction of the editors and Mr. Philip Scott. 116 LENS—First Row: M. Elman, E. Siege, H. Having the largest membership of any service organization in the community, the boys were able to initiate and complete many projects; they organized a Halloween party for the children of the Nassau County Cerebral Palsy Center, assisted the Recreation Department throughout the year, sponsored a successful Winter Dance for the Heart Fund, manned kettling stations for the Salvation Army, and aided in the distribution of Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to needy families. They initiated a voting-age reform project and held the annual Scholarship Bowl and Leadership Banquet. The ISLAND PARK KEY CLUB served its community this year under the direction of President Ted Bass and Mr. P. Engles. The boys collected donations for Nassau County Heart Fund and the Cancer Society. Good attendance at regular meetings helped the club to extend its range of activities. ISLAND PARK KEY CLUB—First Row: L. Zehngebot (Treas.), T. Bass (Pres.), V. Harris (V.P.). Second Row: M. The AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE is an international organization which promotes understanding and good will among the peoples of more than forty countries through the exchange of students. In past years, OHS’ers have lived with families in Malaysia, Brazil, Spain, Denmark, and India. In exchange, Oceanside families have opened their homes to many foreign students. This year, the Oceanside Chapter of AFS and the Sophomore Class co-sponsored the annual magazine drive to raise funds. Ellen with her Indian family (I. to r.): Mr. Deridas Madiman, Ellen, Mrs. Sulochana Madiman, (standing) Jyotsna and Pratibha Madiman. I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any. Mahatma Gandhi In the above lines, Gandhi has expressed the ultimate goal of the American Field Service program. An intermingling of cultures can best be experienced by living with a foreign family. After one day in Hubli, a small town in southwest India, my family was no longer foreign to me. My amma and annu (mother and father) and my two sisters immediately made me feel at home. From the first day when my sisters showed me how to drape a sari, to the last when one of my friends said to me, '’I don’t think of you as an American, you’re just one of us,” the warmth and friendliness of my adopted country enveloped me. India is no longer a series of images: the gleaming white marble of the Taj Mahal, the steaming, crowded streets, unbelievable poverty, and abundant wealth. It is no longer a confusion of smells: incense burning, lotus flowers, or buffalos in the street. It is neither the monsoon rains nor the oppresive heat. For me, it will always be my family and friends who made my stay in India as challenging, stimulating, and enjoyable as it was. Peace—shanti is the most important Hindi word I learned. Although the squad finished the season with an impressive record of 9 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties, it was the first time in many years that the Sailors failed to make the playoffs. Early in the season, led by Coach A. Wright and co-captains Gary Happ and Rich Jagemann, the team’s future appeared secure. The Sailors registered 20 goals in the first five games, shutting out the opposition. The setback came in October, Oceanside losing 1-0 to Massapequa, 10 to Baldwin, and tying 2-2 with Baldwin, eliminating them from the playoffs. Many individuals excelled, dispite the team upsets. Goalie Gary Happ recorded 7 shutouts, bringing his career total to a record 25. He was named All-League along with fullback Rich Jagemann. Designated All-Division were linemen Frank Eovino and Gary Statham. J.V. SOCCER—First Row: J. Dclavarcs. R. Klein, E. Beckelman, P. Blaymore, J. Luckman, N. Rosenberg, D. Harns, B. O'Keefe, D. The squad rolled over its opponents in every league match, displaying the strength and precision of true champions. The Sailors shut out seven opponents this fall and limited New Hyde Park to one-half point in a championship match. Captain Bruce Finestone, Richard Greenberg, and Sam Morrison were the nucleus of the team. Richard, playing first singles throughout the year, won 12 matches while losing only two. Bob Leiman and Bob Cichen-baum met with much success playing doubles together all season. Only the 4-1 loss to Lawrence in the South Shore Championship semi-finals match spoiled the Sailors' chance for an undefeated season. Hay and led by team co-captains Mike Sack and Vinnie Bain, the harriers finished second at the Bethpage Invitational Run. Steve Britt and Tom Yetter were essential to the team’s success. Vinnie’s 12:12 clocking on the Salisbury course was the fastest ever recorded by a student. In the County’s, Vin Bain placed fourth and Steve Britt placed tenth to secure fourth place for the Sailors. Both boys thus qualified for the New York State meet at Buffalo. J.V. The 1967 Oceanside GYMNASTIC team, coached by Mr. Richard Vercruysse, completed its varsity campaign this fall with a 7-2-1 overall record, a 2-2-1 league record, and a tie for third place in the Division I competitions. The Sailor Squad then recorded a distant second to Baldwin in the South Shore meet, and, following a winter’s layoff, scored ten and a half points to finish fifth in Nassau County. The desire to win is always present in any successful team and the GYMNASTIC team was no exception. Owen Horn-ung, last year a Junior Varsity member, finished third in the county meet held at Oceanside. Owen contributed four of the ten and a half points Oceanside scored in the meets. Competing for the first time is GYMNASTICS on the island, senior Tom Hartman captured third place for the Sailors on the horizontal bar in the championship meet. His performances throughout the season earned him the trophy for the Most Improved Gymnast at the Fall Sports banquet. Senior Joe D'Ambrosio was designated Most Outstanding Gymnast. He rightfully deserved this coveted award by scoring 127 points in dual meet competition. A bright spot in Mr. Vercruysse’s team was John Vette. John, only a sophomore, finished second to Joe in the team scoring, amassing 87 dual meet points. After proving his excellence in South Shore competition, John's sixth place in free exercise and fifth in tumbling added two and a half points to Oceanside's team score. Captain Peter Gromet and Randy Beck received the Outstanding Player trophy and the Most Improved Player trophy, respectively. With a team free from weak spots, the Riflemen came in fourth in their league and tenth in the county, an overall good record. With four returning Varsity men from last year, this year’s GOLF TEAM hoped to place high in the Counties. Captain John Coyle finished strongly in the Counties last year and expected to do better this season. Interested in becoming a professional golf player, John already beat the number four man in the state at one of their matches. Under the auspices of Mr. Sullivan, the 1968 GOLF season should be a triumphant one. GOLF—First Row: F. Bacon, J. Coyle, R. Kane, J. Neseliik. Second Row: Mr. Sullivan (Advisor), B. Tremonte, B. Although the 1968 Oceanside VARSITY BASKETBALL squad ended its campaign with an overall record of eight wins and ten losses and a final league standing of fourth place, the team failed to qualify in the playoffs. Captain Gary Happ led the quintet to an impressive start. After eight games the Sailors were ahead, losing only twice to Long Beach and once to Lawrence. The boys won only one of the eight remaining games squelching any hopes for opportunity to compete in a post season tournament. Tony Sorrentino, B. Happ, and Bob Candelaria provided the relatively small Sailor squad with the speed necessary to match taller teams. Gary Happ, Richie Nyberg, and Jim McNamee were the most instrumental scorers. Backed solidly by juniors and sophomores, the team managed to improve upon the record or last year’s squad. J.V. BASKETBALL—First Row: P. Pickens, N Rosenberg, S. Lungo, K. Gcller, J. Most, T. The team opened the 1967 68 campaign by winning five consecutive matches against Valley Stream North, Massapcqua, Long Beach, Lawrence, and Southside. Then the Sailors dropped three in a row', losing to Uniondale, Baldwin, and East Meadow. A win against Carey, followed by a loss to Valley Stream Central and a final victory over Lynbrook concluded the encouraging season of dual meets. D. Blumenthal. Second Row: Mr. Hay. F. The Oceanside High School INDOOR TRACK team proved to be the perennial Power on Long Island. Led by Co-Captains Lee Wallace and Mike Sack, the Sailors, annexed outstanding victories in the Seton Hall Relays, South Shore Athletic League Championships, and the Section Eight Nassau County Championships. The invincible trackmen rolled up forty-three and one-half points out-crossing their nearest rivals in the county by twenty-one and one-half points. The great Sailor campaigns were led brilliantly by Coaches K. Hendler and C. Vilenti. Both coaches worked diligently, in their first year at Oceanside to make the team number one. Many outstanding athletes contributed to the teams success. Vinney Bain, the most prominent distance runner in the county captured his two-mile crown for the second year in a row. Lee Wallace and Jay Brozost finished first and second respectively in the shot-put in the county and dominated their event throughout the indoor season. Hurdler Jay Parker and sprinters Tony Greico, Bernie Hrubala, and Art Sillman were the class of the county as they scored individually and finished first as a team in the 880 yard relay. The two mile relay team was led by Mike Sack and included Ron Leone, Bryan Hazelton, and Jeff Kalins. Glenn Krieg, Steve Fleischner, Andy Rosenberg, and Leon Rosenberg made up the mile relay quartet. Juniors Tom Yetter and Steve Britt were strong competitors as they were the middle distance stand-outs for the Sailors. John Tansey and Russ Forrer were the premier high jumpers for the indoor squad. Mike Puma was comeback trackman of the year as he recovered beautifully from a serious football injury. Placing second in the South Shore relays and competing in several meets in New York City, the team succeeded brilliantly in the 1967-68 INDOOR TRACK season. Ritigliano, J. Lombardo. Trying to rebound from last year’s 9-11 season, the 1968 BASEBALL TEAM, led by many returning varsity players, attempted to take the Division I crown. Coach Sccrbo felt that the team to beat this year would be Edst Meadow. The boys seemed to be strong in every department. The infield of Frank Eovino, Bob Nolan, Tony Sorrentino, and Russ Canan were tough to crack. They were backed up by Peter Boyle, Arnie Weinberg, and Joe D’Ambrosio in the outfield. Junior John Wagner was behind the plate again as catcher. Charlie Termini, Joe Lombardo, Dennis Leonard and Richard Sigota gave visiting batters much worry. Charlie Termini has a good chance of making the Division I All-Star team. If he does, he will join an All-Division third baseman from last year, Frank Eovino. A strong defense, good pitching, and solid hitting should put the Sailors atop Division I. Barring injuries, the team appeared to be the strongest the Sailors have had in many years. J.V. Mr. Frank Dapolito, previously successful coach at Levittown Division, is the head of an entirely new coaching staff; the new game plan stressed defense, and the outlook at Oceanside for the 1968 LACROSSE season was promising. Nine veterans returned from last year’s squad led by Captains Jack Bayer and Walter Foley. Foley, Mike Hart, Bill Fruin, and junior Paul Jorgensen made up a tough defense, the key to victory in Coach Dapolito’s new system. Jim Merry-man, A. J. Russo, Steve Lucas, and Jack Bayer comprised a powerful midfield, and on the attack were E)on Blumenthal, Nick Albanese, and sophomore Jim Trenz. Bill Giacalone, sophomore goalie, showed great potential in pre-season games. The 1968 Sailor stickmen had a great deal of desire and determination which payed off in non-league contests. Playing together as a team brought them success this year. J.V. LACROSSE—First Row: R. Brunjes, B. Harrington, M. Chazen, Carter. J. Mannix, R. Gonzales. B. Gordon. Third Row: S. Borowski, S. The 1968 OUTDOOR TRACK TEAM was one of the best in Oceanside's history. This year, Coach Hendler combined individual standouts with tremendous team depth. The field men, coached by Mr. Vercruysse, were led by Co-Captain Jay Brozost and Indoor County discus and shot-put champ, Lee Wallace. John Tansey and Russ Forrer provided the needed points in the high jump. John also excelled in the broad jump and triple jump while Russ complemented Jay Parker in the hurdles. Bernie Hrubala, Marty Harris, Andy Rosenberg, and Steve Fleischner supplied ample strength in the sprints. Bernie, a junior, ran an exceptional 9-8 for the hundred-yard dash. Steve Britt and Leon Rosenberg, two of the finest half-milers in the county, along with Tom Yetter led the Sailor milers this year. Vin Bain and Mike Sack rounded out the excellent distance crew. The Sailors, undefeated this season, ran their dual meet streak to thirty-six straight wins. The team looked forward to an excellent showing in the Sectional meet held June 1 at C. W. Post College.
