Ur? • ' «• We of The Spindrift have attempted to capture not only the familiar sights, faces, and happenings, but also the very spirit of the years that we have spent at Oceanside High School. Because a maritime tradition has played a large part in the formation of our school spirit, we have given the 1958 Spindrift a nautical theme. It is our hope that, once out on the sea of life, we may be able to relive through this book, the days we spent so happily in the port that launched us so well. 4l DEDICATION We, the Class of 1958, feel that it is an honor to be able to dedicate this year’s Spindrift both to our parents and to our teachers. Together they have guided us and encouraged us in all our undertakings. Through their combined efforts our high school days have become a solid foundation upon which we can build our lives. We sincerely hope that we will be able to fulfill their greatest expectations and to make all the sacrifices they endured on our behalf worthwhile. Board of Education Our deep gratitude goes to the members of the Board of Education whose untiring effort, vigilance, and foresight have charted our course in such a way that our school system is one of the best in the nation. The devotion and unselfish gift of their time and effort have merited them wide respect and have earned us many benefits. We are indeed fortunate to have these men to guide our school system. His kind words of greeting in the halls and his ready praise for our efforts have made him a friend as well as an educator. The people of Oceanside, as well as the students and faculty, can be proud of the work Dr. Boardman has done in educational, and civic programs. He is a fine example of a man truly dedicated to the service of youth. Mr. Fordyce C. Stone Assistant in Instructional Services Mr. Harry T. Helsher Assistant in Business Affairs Mr. Leon H. Mr. Mosback, at the helm of our school ship, has always shown a sincere interest in everyone of us as individuals. His faith in us has made us work all the harder and the conscientiousness he has shown towards all his dealings has awakened in us a realization of our own responsibilities. Miss Kinkade, assistant principal, helped us tremendously throughout all our high school days, and hei advice to us as seniors has made her especially indispensable. Because of the growth of our school and the resulting work of the administration, it was necessary to appoint a second assistant principal. Mr. Poleshuk. who advised our G. 0. and administered the Adult School, was appointed. Every once in a while, I see that big rabbit myself, and he’s every bit as big as Elwood says he is.” Somehow there is a mixup at Chum-ley’s, and Veta Louise is committed while Elwood is freed. This is finally straightened out, and Veta collapses at home, telling Judge Gafney and Myrtle May of the man who M. . . sat me down in a tub full of cold water.” ft?} ttw Wi Cabman E. J. Lofgren joins the confusion at the sanitorium as Elwood is about to be given a shot to make him like other people — ”... and you know what stinkers they are.” Arlene Batwin and Barbara Durst are the curious ones. “All’s Well That Ends Well,” and we have an informal shot of the cast. As Elwood says, “. . . for years I wrestled with reality, and I’m happy to say that I finally won out over it.” Remember These? Key Club Service Club Once again the Key Club has done a magnificent job of service to our school. Under the very capable direction of advisor Mr. John E. Vandermosten, and the leadership of president Paul Forrest, the year’s activities have been successfully accomplished. The Fourth Annual Snow Ball dance, presented by the club, was the highlight of the year. Among its other varied and useful activities, the members of the Key Club sold refreshments and programs at the various sports events. Along with carrying out the work of the Junior Red Cross this club gives service to the school and the community in other ways. Under the direction of Miss Anne Raynor and Miss Elaine Rapp, the club helped veterans, sold pencils in school, and candy at the football games. As in previous years the Service Club quietly went about providing indispensible services to the school and encouraging the type of community spirit that makes good citizens. It is the highest honor given to students and encourages leadership, scholarship, service, and character building. Students with at least an 89.001 average were given application forms to complete. They were also given recommendation sheets which they had members of the faculty fill out. The candidates were judged on all these aspects. Honor Society. Sealed (L. to R.) : R. Luna President. J. Usherettes Club V arsity Club In its second year of service, the Usherettes Club, under the guidance of Miss Regina McDonough, ushered for the Senior Play, Harvey, the Operetta, The King and I; the Honor Society inductions; the various Parents Nights. Their services once again pointed up the need of such an organization to insure the comfort and well-being of our audience. Girls with a winning smile and a sense of responsibility may become members of this fine club. This year for the first time, members of the Varsity Club were elected by the existing members. To be eligible for election, a boy had to have earned at least one varsity letter and have maintained a satisfactory scholastic average. The highlight of the year was the annual faculty-varsity basketball game. Under the leadership of club president Gary Rose and advisor, Mr. John Hay, the boys met for discussions pertaining to all aspects of athletics. First Row (L. to R.) : E. Levin-sor. M. Weissled-r. H. Leader Corps The purpose of the Girls’ Leader Corps is to be of assistance in all school activities, and to develop leadership qualities in the members. The girls are chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, participation, physical education grades and personality. One of their most important duties is starting the physical education classes and aiding the teachers. ♦ The Boys’ Leader Corps, under the direction of Mr. Januszewski, assists not only the physical education teachers but the whole school and encourages qualities of leadership and service in the boys. At the different sports events they turn out in force to do whatever is needed. To become a member, each boy must have and maintain a high scholastic average and must be voted in by the existing members. Hockey During the golden days of fall the girls’ hockey team could be seen practicing. The turnout was large and the spirit gay under the direction of Miss Helen Sedelmeyer. It was hard to pick the girls to play on Honor Day from the numerous skilled participants. Once the hard choice was made, our team ably represented Oceanside at Salsbury and came in second out of a large field. Field Hockey, Kneeling (L. to R.) : J. Sewell. B. Pederson, J. Jachman. A. Off to a slow start, the girls lost their first two games by a few points. Then, with its spirit up, the team played Valley Stream Central, undefeated up to this time, and finally edged them out to beat the team that went on to win the championship. This enthusiasm and determination was typical of all the girls who went out for basketball this year. Basketball Kneeling: A. Rizzo. B. Brennan. Standing: C. Reidel. J. Sewell. J. Jarhmann. G. Keyes, J. Crocker, S. Hagen. Softball Softball is one girls’ sport which received a tremendous turnout this year. The girls divided into groups for practice, and class teams were chosen. These teams played against other L.I.G.A. teams both at home and away. The softball honor team did very well on Honor Day. Twice a week these girls were seen out on the diamond practicing hard. Many of the girls were able to hit the ball a “country mile”. All in all, the softball season was most successful. Softball, (L. to R.) : A. Worsnopp. P. Krass, M. McGuire, K. Hoppen, J. Smith, J. Crocker, E. Olson, B. Ward. C. Terrell. Tennis With the added strength of many new players, the girls’ tennis team made an impressionable showing during the 1957-58 season. Since Oceanside High School acted as hostess for tennis Honor Day, our girls faced all ten participating teams. The competition was tough, but OHS edged its way into second place by one point. Tennis, (L. to R.) : M. Murray, J. Crocker, J. Johnson. J. McElroy, K. Hoppen. Badminton Skill, balance, and a smashing stroke are essential for a victorious badminton team. This year’s team possessed all that and more as they brought victory after victory to OHS. Facing five of their toughest opponents on Honor Day, our OHS girls smashed their way to a second place victory. Badminton, (L. to R.): N. Breiner, J. Crocker, D. Hart, K. Hoppen. J. Johnson, S. Bryon. N. Nader, A. Worsnopp. Archery On many afternoons this spring the air was filled with arrows shot by the girls practicing archery. Because archery is an individual sport, each girl had to be able to give her best performance. The girls really developed their skill to such a degree that the choosing of an honor team to represent our school on Honor Day was a difficult decision to make. Archery, (L. to R.) : C. Reidel, S. Hagen, J. Harben, E. Schechner. Bowling The girls’ Honor Team had a spectacular season this year by defeating all but one of their worthy opponents. All season long the girls bowled above their expected averages; consequently, there were many high scoring games. Among the outstanding players were two juniors, June Smith and Janet Heide, who bowled a “200” game. Bowling, (L to R.) : P. Krass, N. Natter, J. Heidi, B. Brevord, J. Smith, F. Probst. Volleyball This year the girls’ volleyball honor team placed second in the Honor Day mitch at Baldwin. The volleyball teams also went to a play-day at N.Y.U. where they had the opportunity to compete with girls from New York City and Long Island high schools not represented in L.I.G.A. Volleyball, (L. to R.): A. Rizzo, J. Smith. J. McEIroy. M. Kucks, J. Crocker, G. Keyes, J. Sewell, K. Hoppen. J. Jachmann. Modern Dance Modern dance helps to develop coordination and grace. Modern dance groups were seen in the gym once a week for approximately twenty weeks during the winter sports season. Under the direction of Mrs. Evelyn Cherry, the girls learned basic techniques and worked out simple dances. This year the girls presented a “Theme in Variation of Three Blind Mice” for Sportnite. This dance was truly effective and demonstrated long hours of practice and hard work. Modern Dance, First Row (L. to R.): J. Harben, B. Ward. J. Rose, B. Barnes. N. Pnpick, V. Goris. F. Minai. G. Senior Pro The English schoolteacher, Anna Leon-owens, is met at the port of Bangkok by the Kralahome, “the king’s right-hand man.” Shortly after this in the king’s library — “Your majesty, this is Lun Tha, emissary from the court of Burma. He bring you Tuptim, present from the prince of Burma.” Carol Spadanuta and Alan Lupi as THE KING AND I. mtA Anna is inspected by Lady Thiang, head wife, and the royal wives in good favor. “They think you wear dress like that because you shaped like that.” Lum Tha and Tuptim express their love for each other in “We Kiss in a Shadow” and “I Have Dreamed.” The king and Anna have many disagreements —■ “He wish to be new blood king, Mrs. Anna, but it is hard for him” — “I don’t think any man is ever as good a king as he might have been, but this one tried. He tried very hard. In the schoolroom, the children learn to shake hands and dance while “Getting to Know You.” The first act ends with a prayer to Bud-da, asking for help in impressing the visiting English — “And Budda, I promise I shall give this unworthy woman — a house of her own according to agreement, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. The king and Anna have their final disagreement over the king’s treatment of Tuptim when she and Lun Tha try to escape. Both of the young lovers are killed. Soon after, the king also dies — “He will not always say What you would have him say, But now and then he’ll say Something Wonderful . . Anna and Sir Edward Ramsey, the visiting dignitary, reminise over old times — “I told you Edward, I have no one in England anymore, No one.” The royal princes and princesses are presented to Anna, and they are entertained by the royal dancers.
