One of the main purposes of the G.O. to support cooperation between the student body and the administration, was carried out several times to the satisfaction of both groups. The use of the main door by students, the support of the Sider Press with half of the G.O. dues, the financing of school book covers, the running of assemblies every Friday, and the char- tering of buses to various sports events were a few examples of successful cooperation. Our school year was made more enjoyable by such G.O. projects as the purchase of Christmas decorations for the building, the sponsoring of a successful G.O. dance and the encouragement of dancing in the cafeteria during lunch periods. Our life in school was made more meaningful due to the purchase of a service flag for he gymnasium and the adoption of a war orphan. Student Court Seated, (L. to R.) H. Lie-bowitz, L. Wollheim, R. Vandermosten of Kiwanis Club, had another highly successful year. Fulfilling its objectives of service to school and community, its members presented the “Second Annual Snow Ball” dance; presented a Dixieland Jazz Show for the benefit of the Oceanside District Scholarship Fund; presented the “Second Annual Honorary Banquet” for school leaders; and donated a television set to the South Nassau Communities Hospital. Many important services were rendered our school, our community, and the world, through the unselfish efforts of the Service Club. Under the capable direction of its faculty advisor, Miss Ann Raynor, the club engaged in such Red Cross projects as: sending educational equipment, food and clothing overseas; visiting hospitals; presenting food baskets to large needy families. It was also instrumental in the annual enrollment of our high school students in the Junior Red Cross. To finance these paiseworthy endeavors, its members sold refreshments at various school athletic events. First Row, (L. to R.) C. Reit-zel, M. Gettleman. V. Pro-chillo, A. Di Benedetto, P. Rein, H. Future Teachers Future Nurses During the past year, the Future Teachers of America under Faculty advisor Mr. Laurie Patterson visited New Paltz, Brooklyn. Queens, and Hofstra Colleges. An interesting speaker from Ontonita College addressed the members on the teaching profession as a career, and on the various courses offered students by different State Teachers’ Colleges. To enable the club members to get a further glimpse into their future careers many members did student teaching in various elementary schools in the Oceanside School District. Under advisor Mrs. Mildred Prosser, the Future Nurses of America were honored in having many guest speakers at their meetings this year. Among them were: Major Helen Lanchar, who spoke about the field of army nursing; Mrs. Helen Bullwinkle, Director of the American Bed Cross nursing service, who spoke on the American Red Cross; and Miss Louise Ziegler, public health nurse for the Nassau County Health Department, who spoke on the Public Health Nurse. During the year the club visited the South Nassau Hospital and St. Vincent School of Nursing. (L. to R.): A. Wilkins, L. Aizpura, K. Ryals, J. Bedell, R. Bronfman. M. Murray. B. Damsey, J. A field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art was enjoyed by the group. They displayed their talents most effectively by planning and serving appetizing dishes for the Faculty’s Christmas Party; by entertaining Oceanside’s Golden Age Club; and by sharing the responsibility for a successful Tea Dance this spring. The Lens, Oceanside’s literary magazine of creative writing, completed its fourth highly successful edition this spring. SPINDRIFT Our yearbook serves to bring back memories of one's high school career in later life. This year’s Spindrift has as its main theme the treasures that we have explored in our new and beautiful building, Oceanside High School. The creation of the hook took imagination, skill, patience and hard work. This work could not have been accomplished without the guidance of Mr. Thomas P. Barden. Faculty Advisor, and the untiring efforts of a loyal staff headed by Marjorie Kuhn, Editor-in-Chief. The ceremony featured speeches by members of the Honor Society on Light. Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service, and was followed by a summary of these qualities. Faculty advisors, Miss Alice E. Kinkade, Assistant Principal, and Mr. Donald J. Purcell, Guidance Counselor, commended the inductees. The Midnight Club, which provides dancing and refreshments after home basketball games, is sponsored by this Society. Last November the Masque Society delighted its audience with its exceptionally fine presentation of “Hay Fever”, a comedy by Noel Coward. The play met with great success due to the experienced direction of Mr. Jacob Padgug, and the efforts and perse-verence of both the cast and the stagehands. On March 21, the Masquers saw the Broadway production, “No Time for Sergeants”. Afterwards they toured the N.B.C. studio and enjoyed a smorgasbord luncheon. First Row, (L. to R.) : M. Lotz, B. MUSIC DEPARTMENT The universal language of music played a great part in our school this year through the band, orchestra, and mixed chorus, under the able direction of Mr. Benachowski. The band did an outstanding job playing at the football games and at all the assemblies. The orchestra played the music at our graduation. The chorus, the largest in many years, sang beautifully at assemblies and in the concert. The twirl-ers helped out at football games, the concert, and during the Memorial Day parade. “The sweetest music this side of Long Island” was heard at Oceanside this year. TWIRLERS (L. to R.): C. Written by G. Sonnenschien, the play was highly received by the Student body. On November 21, the Spanish Club, with their advisor, Miss Raynor, toured the Latin American Institute in New York. They were guided through the classrooms and given pamphlets about the Institute. Students interested in the medical and legal professions found Miss Sutman’s Latin Club an enjoyable and most valuable activity. They translated the Roman classics, analyzed tbe ten contributions to our language and laws and participated in conversational ‘‘Latin”. The group celebrated their successful efforts with a banquet in the Spring. Opera Guild At a reorganization meeting of the Junior Metropolitan Opera Guild on February 17, John Fisher was elected President; Dorothy Porcari, Vice President: Harriet Barr, Treasurer; and Sandra Harris, Secretary, Under Mr. Edward E. Reinert, advisor, the group discussed many varieties of operas and their respective Libretti. On March 23, its members went to the Metropolitan Opera House to see Rigoletto”. Organized in September by Mr. Alan Chase, this group of boys has done an excellent job to promote good order and a minimum of noise in our corridors and stairways. It is the duty of these boys to administer tickets to all those who violate school regulations. Violators are later tried by the Student Court, the judicial body of the G.O. We are all proud of our Hall Patrol boys and earnestly believe that cooperation with their efforts spells a successful school year. Parking Attendants I nder the able supervision of Mr. William Gerek. and with special thanks to Mr. Robert Sodeman and his Driver Kducation classes, our parking problem was solved with the organization of a group of boys known as the Parking Field Attendants. These boys have the responsibility of seeing that each car is parked properly in its assigned place and that each driver has a permit. These and other rules and regulations were strictly enforced by Oceanside High’s “Safety Squad”. First Row: D. Lynch. J. Campbell, T. Kline. R. Hansman. Second Row: C. Thornton, P. Forrest, D. Under the direction of Mr. Frank Mangiapane, they helped our school by selling refreshments and programs at football games, and assisted in ‘‘after-school” activities and sports events. The highlight of the year was the annual Varsity-Faculty basketball game, March 6. This exciting, thrilling and hard-fought game ended w ith another victory for the Faculty, 33-31. The Outdoor Club was created to provide additional instruction and experience for boys interested in outdoor activities. With Mr. Robert Sodemann. advisor, the club discussed the facets of hunting, fishing, hiking and the conservation of our natural resources during their club periods. Field Hockey ‘Scoop it, flick it, drive right through, Come on Sailors, we’re for you!” This was a familiar sound during those fall afternoons when the girls of OHS took advantage of the nice weather and engaged in a good game of hockey. Since hockey is a highly competitive sport it teaches sportsmanship and skill as well as giving enjoyment and a challenge to win. The Junior and Sophomore teams made a good showing in the competition with other schools. The Senior team was undefeated and unscored upon, and the Honor team placed first in our annual Sportsday at Salisbury Field. Get itr “Tennis, anyone?” Tennis is another sport that takes advantage of the warm spring and fall days. The girls played each other in a round robbin series and the five best players competed in Honor Team Sportsday. Ocean-side placed second in this competition. Tennis is a game that is fun to learn and can always be used for enjoyment outside of school. Badminton Look at the “birdie”, and don’t take your eyes off it if you want to make Honor Team in badminton. Badminton was played in the spring and fall, and quite a few girls participated. Badminton is fun and good exercise. To be quick on your feet takes more energy than many people would imagine. (L. to R.): C. Brackett, D. Behm, B. Bedell. Kneeling, (L. to R.): E. Remade, B. All the girls who signed up for this sport were divided into teams for a round robin, and from these girls the class teams were picked. One team was chosen to represent Oceanside at the annual Sportsday which was held in our beautiful gym. Oceanside’s Honor Team took first place in this event, defeating several other schools. “Rebound First Row, (L. to R.): F. Hoff-mayer, B. Nebenzahl, E. Filti-paldi, C. Lupo, G. Miller, D. Neirmilh. Modern Dance Bowling The Modern Dance group, under the direction of Mrs. Evelyn Cherry, met once a week for about twenty weeks this year. The girls learned basic techniques and worked out simple dances and rhythm, adding variations as they progressed. One of the demonstrations for Sportnite was given by this group as they presented an African type dance to the “Voodoo Suite.” Modern dance teaches rhythm and movement and helps develop coordination and grace. “A strike right in the ppeket” is heard when one of our good howlers makes a top showing. The bowling girls practiced hard and long this year, and defeated Malverne in two matches. Many girls had outstanding bowling averages, but Vivi-ann Haag was our star in every game. Archery On the warm spring afternoons these ‘second cousins to cupid” may be seen out on the archery range with their bows and arrows. The girls taking the sport for the first time were taught the basic techniques and stops. From then on plenty of practice was necessary to develop real skill. As archery is an individual sport, it can be used as an interesting hobby long after our high school days are over. Softball “Batter-up” may be heard out on the softball diamond behind OHS along about April and May, when the girls are warming up or playing a fast game. The girls that show up best in practice are chosen for the class teams and the “cream of the crop” is picked to make up the Honor Team for our annual Sportsday. To the girls who knew you, you were a personal friend, interested in our affairs and always willing to give advice or lend a helping hand. A tireless worker, you always did your utmost to see that all our plans and projects worked out. Sportnile was strenuous work for all of us, but you worked and worried most of all. You have many wonderful qualities and contributed much to making our days at OHS a true treasure. BASKETBALL Oceanside’s basketball squad opened the 1955-56 season under Coach Mr. Frank Mangiapane with a victory over Garden City. With this victory the prospects of a highly successful season looked bright. With a starting five composed of George Angel, Chuck Forman, Walt May, Howie Leff, and Ralph Eovino. the team began to clock from the start. However, the prospects dimmed when Ralph Eovino was forced from the line-up with a back injury. This loss had a telling toll on the Sailors. When at full strength, the Sailors, capably coached by Mr. James Davey and Mr. Edmund For-anna were able to hold their own with the best. The field was led by Barnes’ 11-1 total. Seniors Bob Rose and R. Fogelburg followed with 10-4 and 8-4 records respectively, and sophomore Jiminey had a 10-4 score. The rest of the team, all of whom made good accounts of themselves were Howie Leibowitz, Sal Gionetta, Carlos Ainslie, John Schroepfer, Doug Cameron, Warren Montagnino, Alex Govis, Bob Parks, and Henry Groth. The White Team, led by Beverly Nilsson, presented their entrance, “Gateway to Heaven”. It told the story of four groups — Formal High Society, Carefree Hobos, Contented Cows, and Dainty Butterflies. These groups, representing rich, poor, big and small, sought entrance pass the choir of angels, through the Pearly Gates of Heaven. The Blue Team, headed by Virginia Roswell, brought Switzerland complete with yodeling, to life right here at Oceanside. Tapping Mountain Climbers, perky Dairy Maids, pretty Lace, and luminous Watches all played their part in this lively entrance, entitled -‘Yo Do Le Dio”. Both teams were judged on entrance, marching, organization, games, songs, cheers and pins. There were three demonstrations — tumbling, modern dance, and Leader Corps’ Danish calisthentics. Although the White Team came out on top, everyone had a good time and we will long remember this ’56 Sportnite and all the treasurers of friendship and memories it left with us.
