Our hopes are high, our ambitions lofty, but we stay a moment to relive in these pages cherished memories of our sojourn at Oceanside. By pen and lens we have fashioned our book about a shining light to symbolize the guiding spirit that has emanated from our homes, our community and our school in these formative years of our life. May we prove ourselves worthy Mariners of this Light. 5 2)edica tion We, the members of the Class of 1955, consider it a privilege to dedicate this year’s Spindrift to our parents. Their hands have covered ours on the wheel these many years. We have learned to steer straight with integrity and skill. When our journey of life is crowned with success and honor, it will be due in large measure to their able guidance. We hope that we may fulfill their greatest expectations and duly reward them for their efforts. 7 Alma Mater Oceanside, We pledge again our love to thee. The spirit of the season was reflected in the gala decorations and the beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Two hundred enthranced couples danced to the soft, lilting music of Edwin Benachowski and his orchestra. The success of the Prom must be accredited to the Junior Prom Committee and its Advisors, William Eckhoff and Joseph Muller, who put a great deal of work and effort into it to make it the memorable night it was. 65 Linda Wolheim, Junior Prom Songstress SOPHOMORE First Row (L. to R.): P. Under the leadership of Mr. Edwin Reinert, this year has seen a great development in the size and scope of activity in the Junior Opera Guild. 86 PATROLS The students and the faculty of OHS owe a great deal to the boys of the Hall Patrol. The halls of OHS are kept quiet and orderly during classes and during the passing of classes by their efforts. In spite of rain, snow, or generally inclement weather, the faculty and student parking fields are always carefully supervised by the parking field attendants. It is the duty of these boys to see that the speed limit is observed in the fields and that the cars are correctly parked. On the Left (Front to Rear): B. Hansman, D. Jur-rist, D. Jackson, R. Bozek. Because of the interest shown in this absorbing game by some of our students, this club was initiated, organized and directed by Mr. Joseph E. Orzano, Jr. Though its initial membership was small we look for it to take its place among the more populated activities in the years ahead. OUTDOOR CLUB The Outdoor Club is a new organization in OHS this year, and is under the direction of Mr. R. Sodemann. The prime purpose of the club is to promote interest in various types of outdoor activities, such as conservation of natural resources, fishing, hiking, and camping. The club goes on overnight camping and fishing trips. Membership is open to any boy; dues are twenty-five cents; and on any trip taken by the group, each person is responsible for his own expenses. The group is helping to keep our trees and grounds in the best condition. Each year the club will donate a gift, pertaining to “outdoor life,” to the school. Standing (L. to R.) Ned Stillwagon. R. They are seen at every football and basketball game leading our boys on to victory. Certainly our school spirit is dependent upon our enthusiastic cheerleaders! This year our high-stepping twirlers, under their Advisor, Mr. Haltmaier, provided many minutes of welcome entertainment between halves of our home football games, and took part in many school and community affairs. A highlight of the year was the special classes conducted by a professional instructor wherein our girls learned many new routines. As a finale to the season, a double baton and fire baton routine was performed by our majorette. Barbara Matthei (L. to R.): H. Elphers, J. Stonitsch, M. Arnold, P. Mahland, J. Scarinzi, E. DeMott, E. Kissell, E. Jessup. TENNIS Tennis is looked for as a harbinger of spring. Turning out for the sport are a great many girls who wish to learn the techniques of the game. Climaxing the season is an honor team playday which determines the best girls’ tennis team from the surrounding area. The team lost to Lawrence by 1 point in final sportsday. First Row (L. to R.): N. Acton, B. Henderson, G. Schaefer, Second Row: J. Ruland, D. Dapolito, J. Scolaro, A. Maissl, C. Collins, J. Scarinzi, M. Carman, S. Dunn, J. Sewell, M. Moore, B. Nilsson. FIELD HOCKEY The girls’ field hockey team had two wins and one loss this season. The team attended Saturday morning practices held at Salisbury Field. Many useful techniques were taught to the girls. As a climax to the hockey season the team went to Adelphi College to see the Irish and American Touring teams play their Annual Game. A scramble. VOLLEY BALL Against stiff competition our volleyball honor team won three out of five games on playday. With the large number of girls out for the sport it was difficult to choose the very best to represent our school on honor day. However, the girls chosen proved their skill on that day and won second place. Senior girls outstanding in this year’s competition were: Simone Cromier, Ruth Ann DirkeS, Diana Duplessis, Gerry Essex, Alice Maissl, Helen Meyer, Barbara Matthei, Joan Ruland, and Joy Sewell. Up and over. (L. to R.): H. Meyer, B. Nilsson, S. Dunn, J. Sewell, D. Duplessis, A. Maissl, B. Matthei, E. Cavanagh, S. Cromier, R. Dirkes, A. Quattrocchi, C. Carlson, G. Essex. (L. to R. I: B. Bedell, R. Kowack, M. Vrooman, J. Beaulieu. J. Haag, G. Essex, C. Woltrnan, B. Ravo, E. Kranz. BADMINTON This year our team did a very good job of “chasing the birdie” and completed a successful season. Honor day was held at Lynbrook High School and although the competition was very stiff we managed to win fourth place. Interschool competition with Baldwin, Mepham, Southside and Lawrence resulted in 2 wins and 2 losses. Carol Woltrnan was the team’s outstanding player. Other outstanding players were: Edith Krantz, Beverly Ravo, Beverly Bedell, Jo Ann Haag, Gerry Essex, Peggy Vrooman, and Rosemary Kowack. BOWLING This was the year for bowling. With an experienced team which was determined to win after losing by one pin last year, the Oceanside girls coached by Miss Lewis went out and did just that, coming in in first place over the field of 14 schools. Sixty girls went bowling throughout the season. Interschool competition met 4 wins and 1 loss. Jo-Ann Haag posted high average of 135. Other outstanding members of the team were: Josephine Oliveri, Dorothy Winters, Beverly Ravo, and Vivian Haag. First Row (L. to R.): B. Bedell B. Ravo, L. Kuchinskas, D. Winters, B. Happ. Second Row: D. Giesen, C. Conennier, J. Haag, J. Oliveri, V. Haag. 98 BASKET BALL Girls’ basketball started with weeks of practice followed by a quick series of weeks in competition with other schools. In all, 150 girls participated in the various competitions. Both senior and junior teams won two and lost two. The Honor team, composed of both seniors and juniors, placed second in the annual Sportsday, winning four of five games. Strong guarding plus the sharp shooting of S. Dunn, B. Nilsson and D. Duplessis did the trick. The competitive spirit. First Row (L. to R.): B. Henderson, S. Cromier, J. Sewell, R. Dirkes, M. Carman. Second Row: G. Essex, C. Carlson, C. Collins, J. Guenzel, E. Laversons SOCCER This year there was a revived interest in soccer and the boys came through with the best record thus achieved by any Oceanside soccer team. Under the direction of their capable coach, Mr. Wright and captain, Larry Fritz, the boys worked hard as their record proves. The results were 4 wins, 6 losses, and 1 tie. Oceanside’s team was proud to have on the squad two all-scholastic players, Ralph Eovino at center-half-back and Ivas Laverson full-back. First Row (L. to R.): R. Abele, R. Barrett, J. Klein, M. Coaches: Mr. Poleshuk, Mr. Kelerchian, Mr. Scannella, Mr. Murphy Captains: Paul Wolfrom and Jerry DiGiovanni Oceanside’s football team was still in the rebuilding stage for the 1954 fall season. The team’s overall record was one win and five defeats, hut the team was much better than the record shows. Under Stephen Poleshuk, head coach, and Joseph Scannella, assistant coach, the team opened its season against Great Neck and was beaten 27-6. The team bounced back against Levittown with an 18-0 victory on touchdowns by Bruce Turley, Paul Wolfrom and Tom Broder. This was the first Sailor football victory since the 1952 campaign when they heat Long Beach 14-7. Against Garden City the young and inexperienced Sailor team was romped, and against Malverne they were again beaten 13-8. Two weeks later, the Oceanside team went up against the heavily favored South-Side, Oceanside’s traditional rivals. In that game, co-captain Jerry DiGiovanni returned to action, after being injured early in the season. The Sailors played their finest game of the season only to he beaten 7-0. Throughout the season, the team played well, hut due to their inexperience and size, didn’t fare too well. Seniors on the team who played their last game were: P. Wolfrom, J. DiGiovanni, S. Friedman, R. Nelson, B. Turley, C. Sonnenschein, R. Nelsen, F. Churchill, J. Zullo, R. Wade and D. Venter. 102 First Row (L. to R.): F. O’Conner, T. Fraser, T. Healy, J. Zullo, B. Hastava, S. WRESTLING The Oceanside Wrestling team, under coach Mr. Davies, had one of its finest season’s record of eleven wins and seven losses and took third place in Section One of the South Shore Tournament bowing only to the powerful Mepham and Valley Stream teams. The season started rather dismally as the team dropped its first three matches to Mepham, Lindenhurst, and Levittown. However, from that point the Sailors embarked on a long winning streak taking eight in a row. In most of the eight victories, the team had to overcome a ten or fifteen point deficit to go on to win. In the South Shore Tournament, Oceanside had three champions: Ned Stilwagen, Steve Friedman, and Bob Rose won titles in the 141 class, the 157 lb. class, and the heavyweight class respectively Throughout the regular season the main credit for the team’s success belongs not to any one or two persons but to a joint effort by the whole team. R. Nelsen R. Wotherspoon The Varsity Basketball team, hampered by a definite lack of height, terminated the 1954-55 season with only two victories. Nearing the end of the season, the Sailors showed their greatest determination by whipping nonleague Wantaugh and applying the finishing touches to a strong Levittown team that was fighting for first place. Led by the superb shooting of Ralph Eovino, John Williams, and Bob Nelson, the Oceanside team gave numerous visiting fives a much harder battle than expected. The late season drive of such Juniors as George Angel and Howie Lefkowitz should make next season’s varsity five strong competitors. J. Williams First Row: (L. to R.): C. Forman, B. Nelson, R. The season of competition began December 2, 1954 and ended, February 1955. The team entered the Nassau County Sectional Tournament placing ten out of seventeen entrants. Top shooters were: Allman, Tesar, McGuire, Schroepfer, Stehle. BOWLING I Kneeling: R. Muzio, G. Neilsen, R. Abele, C. Rothkapf, D. Wiimer, B. Madison; Standing: R. Holleman, R. Braun, M. Olsen, T. The Oceanside Bowling Team started the season off slowly, floundering in last place for awhile, but then began to climb and even reached the lofty height of third place in the SSAL League standings. The 1954-55 Ocean-side Bowlers were under the capable direction of Mr. Frank Holleran. The high scorers of the team with their scores were: Tom Woodward, 155; Bob Braun, 145; Ken Rojek, 132; Jim Weeks, 152; Marty Olsen, 140; and Dick Holleman, 128. Kneeling (L. to R.): Mr. Holleran, R. BASEBALL Ability plus desire to win were the combined forces which comprised the 1955 baseball squad. This enthusiasm was put to profitable work through the capable leadership of Indoor conditioning. J. Karadenes and R. Eovino. Coach Frank Holleran. With the aid of the eleven returning varsity men and hustling participants, who had developed from the J.V. experience last year, the sailor squad had new depth and bench strength. The team, last season, improved with every performance and continued playing together all through the summer months. The success attained in the summer league so inspired the Oceanside diamond dandies that they had intentions of obtaining nothing less than the sectional championship. Sincerity was the key note in the pre-season conditioning period. With the absence of the customary jovial spirit, the team acquired much valuable baseball technique. Kneeling: |L. to R.): S.
