A philosopher once said, We must show respect for our philosophers and our plumbers or neither our pipes nor our philosophy will hold water. l believe that this in many ways sums up what one of the major tasks in edu- cation is today. We are living in a very complicated society dealing with a wide range of complicated problems. The schools reflect society and as a result schools must be prepared to respond to the needs of society and prepare stu- dents for a meaningful life style. l feel that a high school should ac- commodate an amalgamation of students and provide a diversification of opportunities. A high school can nolonger stay in its ivory tower and defend activities that might have been worthwhile in l957 but not in l977. Students should have more than one option open to them in getting an edu- cation. Straight academic programs should be offered, combination programs should be available. Cur- riculum should not be confined to the school but should embrace the entire Sosa It There are many options openjor high school students today. it's onli' up to them to take advantage of them. community - for example a student should be able to attend school part- time if he so desires and the rest of the time, put to practice what he has learned in a practical setting in somejob-related field and get credit for it. lf this sounds complicated or far-l'et- ched it's not. lt's taking place right now at Oceana - we have full-time stu- dents: we have students in school pa rt of the day and the rest of the day they are out in the community getting credit for on-the-job training. There are many options open for high school students today, it's only up to them to take advantage of them. When l talk to students I like to im- press upon them that they have the op- portunity here at school to graduate with a marketable skill ifthey wishg or if not. at least by the end oftheir four-year tenure to know themselves, their strengths, weaknesses and interests. Above allto understand the optionsthat are open to them in the future based on what they can contribute. l like to feel that graduates of Oceana who have taken full advantage of the . . education doesn't end after high school but is a life-long process. curricular and co-curricular offering will go out well prepared to either con- tinue their education in a formal setting or possibly go into the world of work, having learned in school that education doesn't end after high school but is a life- long process. Here at Oceana we have respect for our philosophers and our plumbers. lf they don't cheat themselves in school, the pipes and philosophy ol' our graduates will hold water. The 1976 Varsity Football season featured exciting vic- i tories as well as heartbreaking defeats . An outstanding as T pre-season record of 2-0-1 which included at 14-14 tie with Riordan, 48-O pasting of Crestmoor, and a 7-6 victory over a very good Aragon team, reaffirmed the hopes of those who were thinking championship. However, this was not to be, Following Oceana's hard fought pre-sea- son victory over Aragon, a rash of crucial injuries forced the Sharks to continously adjust their starting line-up and placed an extra burden on the younger Oceana football players. The result was the loss of the first three league games, allowing the varsity to play out the season for pride alone. Under the leadership of team captains Denis lVlurray, Bruce Taylor, Kevin Wynne and Jimmy lVlcCrary the team rebounded to win 3 of its last 4 games including Oceana's first ever win over South San Francisco, a stun- ning upset over El Camino and finally the bringing of Pacifica's BIG GAME ANCHOR back home by defeating Terra Nova 12-7 in the season finale. 1st team all-league performers included Denis lVIurray CFBJ, Jimmy lVlcCrary CCBD, and Randy Swayne CDEJ. Exciting is the best word that can be used to de- scribe the 1977 varsity baseball team. Although the Sharks were not powerful at the plate, they were awe- some on the base paths . Jimmy McCrary, Jay Gilbert, Kevin Wynne, Bob Silicani and Nate Foster were un- stoppable once they reached any base . ln addition, many different offensive plays gave them an oppor- tunity to show their speed . The pitching staff was ably manned by returning starters Jeff Nelson and Eric Tretton. Further bol- stering the Shark mound corps newcomers Rick Fenili, Liam Gogan and Bill Rothgary . The defense was steady and strong up the middle with Mike Biancalana or Ron Jodsaas behind the plate, Bob Silicani or Mike Sangimino as the keystone combination and Kevin Wynne or Jimmy McCrary in center field. Strong pitching, steady defense and quick feet were the hallmarks of this year's varsity baseball team one of the first ever fielded by Oceana High. ini, Batboy. The 1977 Varsity Track Team suffered from a lack of personelle . While fielding a team that never numbered more than 25, the Sharks did manage to win their share of events and did produce some fine individual performances. Pacing the '77 varsity was outstanding junior sprinter Bill Ribera, whose events included the 330 low hurdles, the high hurdles, and the 100 and 400 yard sprint events. Denis lVlurray, Randy Swayne, Mike Heim, Mike Harriman Robbie Lothringer and Josie Buch all turned in good per- formances for a Shark team that would have done much better had it the depth of personelle enjoyed by other NPL teams . s rip 'O wt' -QGMCA Usvfvo bww sie W! 4? Oceana's volleyball season opened the fall semes- ter with 36 girls trying for 18 positions. The girls practiced one month before the opening game against Westmoor. Although the teams worked hard during the double round robin tournament, both the varsity and junior varsity teams, chalked up only two wins each . The most valuable player awards were given to Tracy Takahashi Narsityi and Joanne Velasques Uunior Varsity! V 136 Led by Vince 0'Shea and Rob Bishop, the young but experienced 1977 golf team proved to be one of the best ever fielded by Oceana High. Competing ina sport that receives little publicity or spectator support, the team, domi- nated by Sophomores and Juniors, was able to play even with some of the older, more experi- enced teams in the league. As for years to come, with only one graduating Senior on the team, the Sharks appear to be ready to chal- lenge for the championship in 1 978 . GOLF TEAM-Front Row: Vince O'Shea, Mark Keneally. With the loss of last year's first four singles players, this was definitely a rebuilding year for Oceana . Last year's number five man, Dan Enbom, has taken over the number one position with newcomers Dave Lipman and Lorenzo Gonzales holding down two and three positions. Other singles players include Allen Casentini, Rick Martindale, and Mark Day. Last year, second doubles team, Gary Burch and Tom Bishop, have moved into this year's number one doubles team with Genaro Molina and Mel Melliza being number two.
