The new Virginia Beach High School had opened. The students and the faculty of Oceana felt this keenly and the memory lingeredg but in the true Oceana spirit the gaps were bridged, and it was not long before all school activities were running as usual. Principal dm,,w-QLD , if ' The 1953 year book is a credit to the school, and an honor to the staff and sponsors. It required untold hours of hard work to make this book a reality. The months of hard work are behind us, and this is the finished product. From October until the middle of March we worked very hard to get the dummy to press before the deadline. Our ad salesmen were always on the job, and finally our bank statement showed that we could proceed with our l953 Cavalier with- out hnancial worries. When Tony made the announcement concerning the state of our finances, we felt that our biggest worry was over. At last all of the articles were written and proof-read. Nothing left to do but phone Mr. Pidgeon and say, lt's finished. Please come and get the dummy. The printer wants it. Now that the work is finished we can sit down and relax. Miss Margaret Bailey and Miss Jewel Whit- lock were sponsors for the 1953 CAVALIER. .Yv- 4 A A EDITORIAL STAFF Firgt rms: Marian Dudley. Charlotte Bugg. Barbara Hiluhings. Each year we have an informal initiation fol- lowed by a formal installation as our assembly program for the year. There the new members take the pledge of membership and receive their mem- bership cards and pins. Since the convention of last year we have had the pleasure of organizing two chapters of the Beta Club. one in North Hampton and one in Virginia Beach. ln addition to our regular programs and activi- ties. the Oceana Beta Club has sold cokes at all the home basketball games to help with expenses of the convention. The Clee Club. under the direction of Miss Evelyn Gimbert. worked very hard to be the kind of Glee Club of which Oceana could be proud. We performed for both the October and Decem- ber P.T.A. meetings. ln connection with the Drama- tic Club we gave a spoken Christmas Cantata. called Co Ye to Bethlehemf, With the new year we started our plans for the spring concert. lt was a big undertaking for a small group of thirty members and took a great deal of hard work. but there was a lot of fun also. To help us see what hard work could do. we took a trip to Maury High School to hear the Glee Club there. The next big job, and one of the most important was the music for the graduation exercises. We felt that of all our work, this would be of the most value to the Senior Class of 1953. As we look back, we're proud of our work. our music. and our clubg and we hope that it has been a pleasure and a benefit to those around us. ,466 ie Zycvzkfa 14 S t 1 tab J '5 I 5 F x 3 ig if E 2 1 ' E ln'-t row: Edgar Bavnhill. fpon-or. lillvn Reitv-lhaek. There is hard work for everyone, but a rich share of fellowship and fun. We are justly proud of 0ceana's record in these events and this year's team was no exception. The district competition was held at Deep Creek High School on April lst, and we added another laurel to our Crown. On to Charlottesville was the cry that rang through our l1a'ls. The Distributive Education Club is one of the youngest clubs in school. lt was organized so that those persons who are enrolled in retail training might develop a more sincere interest in retailing. The club is composed of seniors who work after school in local retail stores. We not only receive money for working. but we also gain valuable ex- perience. During the past year we didn't accomplish all that we would like to have accornplishedg however, we are proud to have been members of such a Fine organization. Oceana on her maiden voyage to Europe. She is the largest liner in the world and was de- signed by Gates Sykes. As we come aboard, we see Mr. Sykes talking to Mr. Harry Smith, the interior decorator for the liner. The deck is especially beautiful, and near the swimming pool we see the distinguished United States Senator from Virginia. Eugene Farrar, tak- ing life easy as usual. Who is that behind the French book? Naturally, it is Charlotte Walker. She is now teaching at the University of Paris. Playing tennis are Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Allen. Mrs. Allen is the former Miss Rose Marie Phelps. We understand that Bob is running for the House of Representa- tives next year. Well, of all times to scrub the deck and that swabbie is certainly not very neat. No wonder, why it is dear old Irving Greenberg. That little wave following in close pursuit is Peggy Ann Bishop. Time does fly, and as we enter the Tap Room. a Night Club, we hear the beautiful music of J. D. Harley and his half dead orchestra. They certainly are sharp costumes that the cigarette girl. Betty Jean Caton, and the Hower girl. Norma Gilbert are wearing. Before we sit down, we are greeted by the lineris hostess. Miss Diane Newmang and the cap- tain, Mr. Ralph Williams. and his wife. the former Miss Geraldine Huggins. As we are seated, we see entering Mr. and Mrs. William Bartee, the New York millionaires. Mr. Bartee is President of the First National Bank, and Mrs. Bartee is the former Miss Diane Taylor. There is a great commotion at the door. and rightfully so, because coming in is Carolyn Meachum, first wom- an President of the United States, and first Presi- dent under 35 years old. She is accompanied by her Secretary of State, who is also her husband, Mr. Charles Lowe. Also with the President is Senator Charles Runk, who had the age limit for President changed from 35 to 25. At the next table we see the famous tap dancer. ,io Ann Russell, who is starring in a Hollywood movie produced and direc- ted by Mr. Tony Wadsworth. Tony has just an- nounced that Jo Ann is to be his model of the year, and he has just invented a new camera that de- velops pictures before they are taken for those unexpected shots. Now the Master of Ceremonies has come out and we know that with that West Virginia accent it is no other than Arnold Flippen. He is now introduc- ing Marjorie Chester. the world's greatest magician, and her able assistant. Audrey Hutsenpillar. Now to the serious side of the show and Miss Janice McDonald, the famous opera star, singing her famous arrangement of that great classical song, 4'It's in the Bookfi Coming in late as usual are Mr. and Mrs. Walter Godwin. Mr. Godwin is Nobel Prize Winner in Science. and Mrs. Godwin is the former Miss Betty Louise Murden. Back to the fioor show and the M.C. is introduc- ing some famous people. First Charlotte Bugg, the great movie actress and star of One Night at the Top Hat. Next the M.C. introduces the President of V.P.I., Walter Gresham. He apologizes for his wife's absence, but baby sitters are hard to find. By-the-way his wife is the former Miss Barbara Hitchings. On with the show and the exciting new comedy act of Merritt Holloman and Patsy Franklin. They are terrihc. The closing act of the floor show is the famous singer and guest of honor Miss Eva Lee Savage. the girl that set Broadway wild with her version uf Doing What Comes Naturally. As the lights come on. we look around to see who else is present. Over in a dark corner we see Cor- delia Scott and Bill Perry playing a game of Honeymoon Bridge. Wonder if the name is of any significance? At another table we see the honorable Stuart Chaplain. Post Master Generalg and his wife. the former Miss Rebecca Maccubbin. Becky seems to be leaving, probably has to get back to her four little boys. The li.S.S. Oceana may not be the first liner to have a singing waiter: but believe us. it has the loudest. Why Denny Allen. funny we never knew you could sing. He is talking to someone. oh yes. it is Grace Vakos. who christened the liner. Who is that all the girls are around? Of course. it is Bobby Carlton. Judge of the International Beauty Contest. Mrs. Speight. the former Miss Janet Fentress. is on vacation with her oldest son Puddin. Jr.. and good fricnrl. Mrs. Frances Martin Tinnn. Frances is going to France to study the language. Wonder if that is all she will study ? Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Jester are iirifr on board with their three daughters. While we talk to Wayne. he apologizes for his wife's tardiness, but they couldn't find a baby sitter either. His wife is the former Miss Charlotte Scarborough. What is all the excitement at the door? Well. well. it is Miss Marian Dudley wearing a gorgeous white ball gown. Miss Dudley is the Hrst woman ambassador to the city of romance. Paris. Miss Rebecca Strickland and Miss Anna Themides have just come in escorted by the designers of the ship. Over in another corner we see Frank Allen. Frank tells us that he is playing football in the Olympics next year. but Peggy Spruill seems to be taking his mind off the serious things. as they gaze lovingly at one another. We see another girl who is headed for the Olympicsg she is Barbara Kernan. but it doesn't seem to be worrying her. General Thomas Mason of the Marines looks rather lonely: he says that he is getting away from it all. The only thing on the Generals mind is that famous child's hair designer and barber. Miss Beverly Thoreson. being kept busy by the children on the ship. As we leave the Tap Room. we say 'iBon Voyage to the U.S.S.
