Hampden-Sydney The 1951-52 year is now history, but fond memories will linger on for years. A sincere desire for success and happiness goes to all members of the graduating class of 1952. You, your fellow students and faculty have worked hard to make this book a memorable one by depicting the true life of the high school student. Many other accomplishments for your Alma Mater merit praise. May the other classes represented in this book be inspired to strive to become even better students and leaders than those who have gone before. Congratulations to the Senior Class of 1952 upon your many achievements and may God bless you in whatever you undertake in life. x .ll'I.IA Hifncsms A. B., M. A. This hook took a great deal of hard work on the part of the staff, the Seniors, and especially the sponsorsg Mrs. Owens and Miss Loving, but the completion gives us a satisfied and successful feeling. The first of the year was spent soliciting ads from Norfolk. Virginia Beach, and Princess Anne with most of our requests answered cheerfully. During th: campaign, everyone pitched in and worked constantly on the dummy and had it completed lay December. XY'e hope you enjoy this hook as much as we have enjoyed compiling it. They played at the Oyster Bowl, where they were rated tops, at Smith- field, Hampden Sydney, the an- nual Potato Festival in North Carolina and, of course, at our own Ocean Bowl where they pre- sented us with difficult drills and routines. This year a num- ber of the band members en- tered the State Solo Contest and all received excellent ratings. The band naturally appeared at all our football games adding color and boosting morale. The band is under the direction of j. A. Cantwell. OCEANA CAVALIERETTES The Oceana Cavalierettes were started this year by Mr. Cantwell, our band director. He wanted to add something new to the band and thought this was a good idea. Miss Sterling, our gym di- rector, was asked by Mr. Cant- well to select about twelve or sixteen girls for try-outs. The following were selected: Sally Baines, Sylvia Baggett, Lois Gim- bert, Katherine Jager, Delores Manges, Betsy Nelson, Barbara Marshall, -Ioan Pruden, Ruby Tomlinson, jean Tomlinson, and Grace Vakos. Sylvia Baggett and -Ioan Pruden were chosen as captains. The Cavalierettes have gone with the band on various trips which were most enjoyable. They have gotten high recognition for their outstanding work, thanks to Mr. Cantwell. OCEANA MAJORETTIZS The Oceana Band was led again by the maiorettes, re- splendent in new uniforms of white satin and gold trim. Betty Murden blew the whistle as Drum Major this year and Patricia Hitchings twirled her baton as mascot. The other girls in the corp were Peggy Bishop, Frances Duke, Edith Mary Darden, Doro- thy Meeks, Myra Craddock, Ellen Godfrey, Ambra Rau and Mary Lyon McKenny. uReaClin'n Writin' H Beowulf didnt start this, for this is Oceana's own Literary Club? We're planning big doings this year with Charlottesville as our goal. Our poetry and prose readers, spellers, debaters, and public speakers are working hardg but, since all work and no play isn't fun, we have parties once in .1 while, Everyone will agree that the floor of the skating rink is mighty hard. X No Business Like Show Business Under our new sponsor, Mr. Barnhill, the Oceana Dramatic Club started the year with eager enthusi- asm. We elected our officers, they are Nita Aldridge, presidentg Herman Medlin, vice-presidentg Carolyn Meachum, secretaryg and George Aldridge, treasurer. Almost immediately we began rehearsing a play The Flattering W'ord. It was presented to the student body and was a great success. Next we produced a drama, Echo, this too, was a colorful success. Our Christmas program was thoroughly enjoyed by all who saw it. After the holidays we put into rehearsal two one-act plays. These were 'Tm a Fool and Marriage Proposal . Marriage Proposal went to the district literary competition meet. Our motto was Charlottesville Bound. They say all work and no play makes even high school students dull fellows. The members of the Oceana Dramatic Club are im! dullg we held a Shipwreck dance in the gym, the slogan for this was lf he won't drag you, you drag him. No matter how nervous Mr. liarnhill was, how long we practiced, how we worried about stage-fright. or how our southern accents sounded on recordings, it was a great year for dramatics. At the end of the season, the team lost one of their lirst string guards, Barbara Ketnan, this being a drawback to the squad. Even with the loss of four of the first string from last year the girls gave everyone they played a light. Doris I-larcum led the for- wards in scoring with Charlotte Scarborough coming in second. The guards led by Becky McCubbin did more than their share for each game. The team appreciated the efforts and patience which their coach, Miss Joanne Sterling exhibited throughout the year. ii FIRST ROXV: Barbara Kernan, Nita Aldridge, Becky NcCubbin, Doris Harcum, Charlotte Starborotigli. V. started out with some very good prospetts this year although we were overcome by live teams, much to our regret. We can easily say that everybody was enthusiastic over the J. Vfs. Our first game was with the Academy who we wanted to beat very much, but they were a little too ex- perienced for us. Our next game was with Creeds who we edged by two points. Everybody has their tiff nights. The next was another loss to Deep Creek. We are glad to say we won our next one with Great Bridge. That was the night one of their players made points for us. Next was Mathew XY'haley, who we beat by four points. Kempsville edged us twice. but we put up a good fight. Next was a win in an overtime with Great Bridge. We went to Franklin and won by twelve points. The last but not the least was with Norfolk Academy who edged us by four points. Through the whole season we ended up with a 500 average for the season. to Varsity Basketball The 1951-52 Basketball season started with 8 returning letterinen and a new boy, Paul Mclxin non, who helped us very much, Donald Marshal took all scoring honors with 216 points. The team ended up with a 6-4 in the conference. Everyone thinks that the team had a good sc 1 :on with a 11-9 for the complete season. The team had an average of 49 points per game ind 1 total of 995 points. we Titty we 'nm 45 Smithfield 20 41 Kempsville 59 51 Academy 40 65 Deep Creek 63 57 Creeds 12 43 Churchland 58 Sf' Churchland 50 50 Great Bridge 55 50 Deep Creek 55 45 Franklin 46 41 Suffolk 45 66 Creecls 52 42 Great Bridge 52 55 Poquoson 110 67 Franklin 42 45 Academy 46 45 Mathew Whaley 48 54 Kempsville 57 56 Smithfield 57 45 Kempsville 47 C as ' f ' ., 'J R. . S., feeling very proud, thinking that we had gained enough knowledge to become a member of this high school, but unaware of what our fate would be. Somehow we acquired the name of the Speed Demons, from our upper classmen. The very dignified seniors would walk nonchalantly through the halls, as we ran around trying to find our classes, This was an entirely new life for us, having a different teacher for each class, being assigned lockers, entering activities, filing and following a schedule and most of all finding a place for ourselves in high school. That summer went by very fast, and there we were in our freshman year, wondering if we would ever become big seniors. Vile found high school much better that year for then we were considered high school students land not merely the lowest form of humanity? fmeaning the little eighth gradets.J We were, however, then called raft, but we were allowed to take part in more activities, such as: the Newspaper, Glee Club, Dramatic Club, and a few made the basketball team. Vile found ourselves back again the next year, only that time Sophomores. Our subjects were a little harder that year, but we worked hard trying to pull through, for we knew we had two busy years ahead. Our junior year we really began to sit up and take notice, for we were getting closer to our big goal. SENIORS. We soon found we had much to accomplish that year. Many of the boys and girls went all out for activities, some of our boys made varsity and some of the girls cheerleaders. The basketball tearii also played a big part. We raised money for our big Junior-Senior banquet from the Curtis magazine drive and our class won a radio for selling the most magazine subscriptions. Then came the long awaited senior year, our last and final step, but somehow we get a lump in our throat at the thought of leaving old O. H. S. The day our senior rings came we were so happy that we went around showing them to everyone that came along. We were just as proud of our school as we were of our rings. It was hard at first to get accustomed to being the so called dignified seniors, and set a good example for our under-classmen. We found that the biggest problem this past year was putting our yearbook together, for which every- one did his share to make it our greatest success. Our senior play was also a great success. Each person put his heart and soul into making it one of the best plays ever presented at O. H. S. But after the long drill of learning our parts we had to get down to work in order to pass our final exams. The day finally came when we, the seniors, took over the school, for it was our class day. We had assembly during one of the morning classes and our slaves were there to greet us. Wfe had a big time that day. All we had to do was click our fingers and our little slaves were at our command. Our caps and gowns came in use for the assembly but afterwards we only wore our caps to stand out among our other classmen. After this we knew it wouldnt be long before the big moment because graduation day was drawing near. As we look back to our wonderful years in high school, we realize that they have been the best years of our lives, and as the years go by we will always remember our Alma Mata. Ltr Yifiil X Ll tzop zecy ofiffze Oass 0 1952 Between the waving banners and cheering crowd we'll try to take time to include you in our annual Ocean Bowl celebration of 1962. The bleachers are swarming with people and the weather is just perfect -no need for a heavy overcoat this year. But wait, you cant very well get in without a ticket, so as we stroll up to the ticket window we see none other than Kermit Land. Now wouldnt you know that wher- cver there is the sound of money youll hnd Kermit not too far away. He tells us that his wife, Ann To- ler Land, is here with their little son Kermit Simmons, -Ir. Oops, now wouldnt that be just like me to drop the change. lt's so nice of the man in the dark overcoat to help us look for it. Wliy, look who it is! lt's the newly appointed Ambassador to Siberia, Billy Powell. XX'hen asked how he will like his new position, he gloomily answered, since Barbara Norryce ran away with the new Toni Sales Manager, Wiley Harrell, I just want to get away from it all even if it means going a little to the extremes. Poor Billy, he was so faithful, too. Someone approaches us with a program, and if we didnt know better well think it was Roger Miles. This couldnt be Roger because he always had such a nice head of hair and this man is practically bald. Later we discover that it really is Roger who had mistakenly used household ammonia for a shampoo. He also tells us that his murriage to Carol Ratlev is to take place next week. By the way, Carol has just come into the millions. That Roger always was a sly one. Now as we approach the gate we notice a crowd gathering. It seems that Miss Mildred Godfrey, Tar- zan's new leading lady has appeared with a lion cub on a leash I remember seeing an advertisement for Greens greasless grip had cream which is very handy for swinging on vines, and I can't help but won- der what has happened to Faye Lee since she ran away with the circus. We also note that Donald Old is Miss Godfreys new sarong designer. Wasn't he the quiet one. though? His elopement with Shirley Davis, trapeze artist, was kept a secret for days. Upon entering we notice that the stadium is very much the same. We take our seats on the fifty yard- line and as we are waiting for the festivities to start we decide to glance at our programs, This year they are sponsored by the new miracle drink Hada Cola . Its very much like Coca Cola except the new element. Hada, discovered by Patsy Abernathy in Chemistry class years back, has been added. It is supposed to give you a zest for life, and since it has appeared on the market Patsy has retired. As the band begins with the Star Spangled Banner , we hear the voice of none other than the former Miss Nita Aldridge, now Mrs. Perry Chambers. Mr. Chambers has resigned as Ace Exterminator and they have both decided to stay home and raise a few little termites of their own. The minister, the Reverend Al Smith, also newly elected president of the Temperance Union, takes his place and offers a short prayer. Mr. joe Fail, the principal, steps up to introduce our guest speaker which is none other than Senator Horace Futrell. His wife, Gretchen Kime Futrell, is sitting close by to give him moral support. Somehow he still gets microphone fright. After the Alma Mater, the Oceana Cavaliers run out onto the fiield and the crowd goes wild, They seem to be in tip-top shape, too. They are greatly favored in the game tonight over the Washington Red Skins. Coach Royce Byrd says this game will be a cinch to win. His wife, formerly Doris Harcum, says he hasnt broken training either. At least not if she could help it. But who can this be trailing behind the team in jeans, a bucket of water in one hand and a sponge in the other? As she gathers the boys in a huddle for some last minute instructions we notice that it is none other than Mary Lee Ward. Her lifes ambition was to become a member of the team, too. Her rival, water-girl Lillian Booker, is giving her Indians a pep talk, also. It seems that these two-used-to-be friends haven't spoken to each other since a conversation was overheard on each others party line. Mrs. jones told Mrs. Brown that-well, you know how it goes. At the half, the score is sixty seven to six in favor of the Cavaliers. It's really a close game. The band is ready to march on and as we stretch a little we glance around to notice who has been ringing cow bells in our ears. Why goodness, Shirley Brothers and Catherine Meeks are still peppy as ever. They be- came close friends soon after the triangle-love affair appeared in the Lighthouse , now a large newspaper 5 5-A -5-55 5 X1 5---5 ---.54-5 - X1 li -5444-5 xx I D 4.-:... 4 '..s4. -- 4.4-4. .4....44 .44 4 ... x s--' ' . 14: ....,, -4 .. 4...- 4 : . .,.. r ...44.4.- D 44.4 T 4 153555.
