For those who were fortunate enough to know Mrs. Gilman, her untimely death meant a great personal loss. Much more, the absence of Mrs. Gilman from our lives leaves a void which touches on every aspect of the Oxy community. She was known to most of us simply as the Presidents wife. For the past several years, however, many of us had the privilege of taking part in Mrs. Gilman's famous Gourmet Gooking classes. As her pupils, we recieved not only the finest tutelage in gourmet cooking, but were also offered her warmest friendship. She shared her many colorful stories, her kitchen, her time, her opinions, her talents, and her rare gift of eternal optimism - not to mention her incredible sense of humor. She was loving, full of vitality, sincere, and dedicated to everyone and everything she believed in. Mrs. Gilman kept on giving when most people would have stopped. To all of us, 'ishe still lives on in the acts of goodness she performed and in the hearts of those who cherish her memories. May the beauty of her life abide among us as a living blessing. It is in this spirit that this yearbook is dedicated to the loving memory of Lucille Gilman. 1 . he. i 2 Q 4 . The Tiger? Some ask about where he went. There are those who say he left and transferred to USC. Others maintain that he just left to take a powder but needs a scholarship to get back in. Occidental College had the undisputed National Championship track team this year. In 1978, Oxy is officially the greatest college team in the United States. Winning a national championship, considering the variables, the competition, and the depth and consistency of preparation, often implies domination of a sport. Winning both the NCAA Cross Country and Track Championships in one year implies ownership. At a meet where the prevailing attitude is one of calculated indiffer- ence, Oxy served notice by giving a disco rendition of Tiger Roar in the middle of the field. And the flavor of the explosion following the mile relay which clinched the meet was decidedly Orange. An unprecedented nine All Americans accounted for the point score. They were led by one Danny Williams, who Won the triple jump for the second time in as many years with a national record of 50'2U. An equally amazing effort was made by Kevin Hall. Only four weeks after the sophomore had broken his foot, Hall went miss-less through to 6'10 to take the number two spot in the high jump, missing 7, by the width of his sock. The relay unit of Steve Henderson, Steve Telaneus, Wendell Morris, and Greg jones was one of the youngest in the school's history. These Tigerbabes-three freshmen and one sophomore-ran an incredible 3: 13.4 in the final to blow away all teams but one. Wunderkind Steve Henderson, in addition to his unbelievable 46.5 relay leg, ran 47.7 to muscle second place in the 400 meters. On the first two days, Ross Buchanan started it off for Oxy with a third in the decathalon-an awesome effort of 6808 points. And Tom Colley stood up to the heat which dropped more than one distance runner, with a fine third in the 1500 meters. Head Coach Kevin McNair, elected Coach of the Year for 1978 by his peers, has had a first year worthy of retirement plans to track heaven: two National Championships. But McNair is the hungriest Tiger of them all and this is just the beginning. The age of the mile relay team alone tells of Oxyis future in capital letters.
