Oxy lumped into an early lead when fullback Gary Jeffries intercepted a pass and rambled untouched 65 yards to pay dirt. Early in the second quarter Mike Holmes fell on a Long Beach fumble, and two plays later Jack Kemp sneaked over for the score. But the Oxy lead was shortlived as the '49ers roared back to Scgre twice and add the all-important extra points. Santa Barbara handed the Tigers their second loss of the young season by a count of 3l-6. The powerful Gaucho ground attack proved too much for the Bengals who were able to tally only in the waning moments of the game on a John Breckell to Morrie Adams pass play. The following week the Bengals upset a favored Los A nfgeles State College team l3-6. A short dash by Mike Quint and a Kemp-to-Darel Sorenson aerial accounted for the Oxy tallies. The Bengals threw a scare into a highly rated San Diego Marine team but faded late ' th , - in e game and ended on the short end of a 27-6 count. A Kemp-to-.lim Mora pass provided the lone Oxy touchdown. A powerful Whittier passing attack proved the undoing of the Bengals as they fell before the Poets 32-l4. The Tigers were trailing by a l9-l4 count until late in the third quarter, but the talented right arm to Whittier tailback, Gary Campbell, finally wore down the Oxy secondary. The Bengals chalked up their victory at the expense of a favored Barstow Marine eleven, 27-l2. Darel Soren- gon put Oxy on the scoreboard with his receipt of a Jack Kemp pass. Later in the game Tiger halfback Walt Williamson burst through a hole in the foreward wall, put to good use his hurdler's speed, and showed his heels to the Marine secondary on a 43-yard touchdown run. A recovered fumble by Nick Rodionoff and a l5-yard run by Curt Plott iced the Oxy victory. The powerful Redlands Bulldogs managed to bottle up the Tigers' passing threat and rewarded their home- coming crowd with a 28-O victory. Such was the case with coach Grant Dunlap's T956-57 edition of the Tiger varsity hoopsters. When the season was over and the games tallied up, the Tigers found themselves on the short end of one two point and three one point decisions. Besides that, three other losses were by six points or less. Reverse the decisions of those seven games and the Tigers would have a To win, 4 loss final record. But Lady Luck didn't wish to see it that way and the Tigers completed the year with a 9-TT overall mark and a 4-4 conference record good enough for third place. On only rare occasions did the Tigers have a chance to play what would be called a breather They met man ot the top teams in California, beating a few and putting, up rugged battles in the losing contests. But there were times when fortune did smile kindly on the struggling Tigers. The second meeting of Oxy-Whittier found the Tigers easily licking the Poets and dropplhg them out of the conference lead. ln one contest .with Camp Pendleton's star studded Marines, the Tigers growled loudly to the tune of an 88-77 victory. Despite the disappointments and the heartbreaks sev- eral bright lights broke thorough an otherwise 9l00mY season. W., Swimming VARSITY SWIMMING After drought of championships the past several seasons, the Tiger swimmers, under coach Roy Dennis, regained their past year's form and won the conference d-ual meet championship. At press time, the Tigers were fighting it out for the SCIAC championship meet title. The Tigers were undefeated in conference meets, topping Ari- zona in a non-league affair. Heading this year's squad of many fine performers was Stan Morner. Morner made the All-American list in the IOO yd. conven- tional breaststroke and set school records for the 200 yd. butterfly and 200 yd. breaststroke. Chip Post, at press time, had broken the conference 440 yd. free style record and Ernie Contreras was expected to win his third straight conference diving crown. Other letter winners were John Calderwood, Tim Kahn, Dick Norman, Tom Pavey, Bob Sanchis and George Wilfong. FROSH SWIMMING Like the gymnastic squad, good individual talent and lack of depth was the story of the l957 edition of the Tigerkitten swim squad. Although they failed to win any matches, Tigerkittens Russ Foster and Allen Raphael came through with many fine per- formances. Foster was the terror of the league with his blazing free style times while Raphael looks like a top prospect for next year's varsity in the distance freestyle events. Oxy's two imports from Hong Kong, George Lee and Euan Mak, won many breastroke races and Mike McFadden looked good in the backstroke. Pudge Judd in the butterfly and Jerry Jones in the backstroke rounded out the squad. Pew Tunntl 3 i I V I A i l l 3 VARSITY SWIMMING SQUAD. Two early season losses to Pomona and one each to Redlands and Whittier threatened to foil the Bengals in their bid. Then, with the pressure on, the team proceeded to round into shape. A late season winning streak carried the Tigers into a good position to win its second successive cham- pionship. Two key games to be played with conference leader Pomona will probably tell the story. A number of returning lettermen from last years team formed the nucleus of the squad. Standouts included Captain Dick Burns, an all-conference selection, at first base, Tom McGetchin, Ken Walters, and .lack Rankin, infielders, catcher Ron Botchan and Kal Badran, Phil Alfano, John Richardson and Chuck Boydstun.. At the start of the season it appeared that the Tigers would be lacking first line pitching, but Ken McKenna, up from the Frosh, and Jim Dallas, a transfer from LACC, quickly put an end to any such worries. Next year Coach Dunlap will have the services of several of the standout members of this year's frosh team. Granduation, however, will deprive him of this years stars such as Captain Burns, Botchan, Boydstun, Richardson, and Wolters. l6O Phil Alfano Kal Badran Ron Bc Jim Dallas Tom McGetchin Ken MC dshm. Coach Tom Caffrey was hard pressed to field a full team at the start of the year, lout as the season progressed they were to become contenders for the conference championship. The season's highlight was probably an upset 2-l victory over the highly rated Pepperdine Frosh. Standout for the yearlings was pitcher Harry Eddas who also was one of the squads leading hitters. Other top performers included third baseman Lee Colman, Phil Towle at sec- ond, Gerry Regnier at first, Dave Reeves at short and Mel Stoltz in the outfield. l62 FROSH BASEBALL SQUAD.
