la encina Occidental college --.- ,,.,..u , .,,... ,. ,. A ,A - ., Published by the Associated Students of Occidental College '1 l l S96 la eneina ditor's Foreword This annual may seem different to you. It is different from the traditional concept of an annual. There is no theme to weld its parts into an entity. Consistency of design is its binding force, not a relat- ing of words to events but events to shape and space. Transition is the keynote of this book. The same transition that is being made by most journalistic media, from the power of the printed word to the swift impact of forceful pictorial presentation. Only through teamwork and willing cooperation could an effec- tive representation of Occidenta1's 1953 be produced. It is to this year's members of La Encina staff that li wish to express my deepest gratitude for their gifts of time and energy. Throughout the year crises have besieged various phases of production, but there were always volunteers ready to be martyred. I hope to them this book is symbolic of more than a year's hard work. 'Yi 4 w President's Message We are caught in one of those periods in human history when it is difficult to bring our essential idealism into harmony with the realities that face us. And we must hold to both our ideals and our ability as informed, intelligent persons to face forthrightly and realistically each clay's problems. This is a test of our maturity. Our imagination seeks to encompass the meaning of all that has come upon us-upon the world, upon this nation, upon ourselves as college people-in the way of new respon- sibilities and new opportunities. I am proud that with all the joys and pleasures of our common life at Occidental, we are sober, inquiring, and alertg serious, yet not dour, stolid, and unresponsive. ln many though differing ways, each for himself or herself we are all seeking the abiding values and the function of virtueg we are striving to build a community of intelligent love, reason, and devotion in order that the contagion of such community experience may cause our lives to possess something of that security and serenity that only the thoughtful and the sincere know. Thank God there is little cynicism here. Thank God there is love, and wonder, and worship, and friendship, and useful work to sustain us. For myself l feel richly blessed in the fellowship and opportunity that are ours. News of the outside world filtered into the conscious- ness of the Occidental community in the fall semester this year, generating intense emotions and feverish, if somewhat undirected, activity. Campaigning for the presidential candidates was spearheaded by the spear- heads depicted above. The smiling spearhead was backing the winning golfer, the smaller group of devotees of American bachelorhood on the right didn't do nearly as well. But why do they look so smug? During the campaign, Occidental's first attention to- the real world in four years, the college was split into two or three camps-those who rejoiced that Adlai was doing badlai, those who cried, Dwight is a fright, and those who repeated, Ah, whatsa- difference who wins as long as there's no reshufiling of the History of Civ department? Ostensibly, the former group was vindicated. La Encina is adopting a Wait and See policy, however. At any rate, it's all over now and the campus has settled back to the normal condition of concentrated, dedicated ennui. lpha Phi Gamma Row I: J. Cornelius, N. Stur- geon, D. Price, C. Jenks. However, we shall remember it as the comeback team of the year. It wasn't until the Bengal varsity had become the victim of four heartbreaking de- feats in a row that they displayed their true greatness. They came on to win their next three games and they finished a strong second in the South- ern California Intercollegiate Confer- ence. And, when the All-Conference selections were released, the Bengal's great comeback was rewarded when Oxy garnered eight places on the All- Conference teams. The 1953 team will provide many new faces for Oxy's followers to see. The old standbys like Matt Kurilich, Gordon Wells, Dick McCullough, Al Padilla, Rudy Gallardo, Jim Parrish, Keith Noonan, Rusty Miller, Tom Stadlinger and Dick Wells will be gone and Coach Dennis must virtu- ally start from scratch. Even now the spirit is high among the grid talent and they're looking forward to a championship in '53. 1, l -i W It 'ii Y 'L ' , aff' ' R ' ' Qi ' K ' 1 .ff 1 ,..- 5 15 I I L 'S 5 S xv J L ' . Every opportunity was made into a successful score as a spir- ited Bengal eleven stole the 1952 foot- ball opener from the hosting Cal Aggies at Davis. The first game gave the basis for hope for another Con- ference Championship but difficulties besieged the gridiron crew and a sec- ond place was their reward for a bril- liant comeback. Due to an overdose of butterflies, John Barnes did not reach the finals, but Bob Mc- Millan did and placed second to Josy Barthel of Luxembourg in the 1500 meter run. Bob was so close that both he and Barthel were given the same time of 3:45.2, and Bob was awarded the American mile record of 4:07.8. The dawn of the 1953 track season brought renewed speculation as to whether Coach Jordan could do it again. Serious holes were left by the absence of graduated stars doubled by the uncertainty of transfers, but early track work- outs brought a record one hundred applicants for track berths and a ray of hope to hosts of Tiger track fans. This ray became a beacon as early time trials and the master touch brought the team into the limelight so often occupied by Coach Jordan's prodigies. The first meet of the season re-established the Bengal as king of track when they turned a toss-up meet with the strong Whittier Poets into a 97-34 massacre. Although La Encina goes to press before the season really gets under way, it is expected that the 1953 Jordanites will capture the SCIC cham- pionship and go on to place in the NCAA. it-gb.
