ARTHUR G. COONS PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE A Since the Korean war beganno student has escaped the influence of this and other world events upon his or her life. A score or more of our Occidental household did not return in September: other scores of our colleagues in the first semester left us in February for military service at home or abroad. All of us have had our minds alerted and our hearts quickened by the impact of this war and the awesome threat of another holocaust. Everyone's life has been affected: many of our plans and prospects suddenly altered. There is some basis for pride over the way this campus has taken these alarms. We have debated national and United Nations policy in good spirit. We have accepted in loyalty and understanding the sacrifices that have come. We have not been undone by the prolonged uncertainties about manpower policy and procedure. We have kept our eyes fixed upon the prevention of further war if honorably possible. We have studied the requirements of peace. We have mobilized for civilian defense and have offered our facilities for serviceable use in the emergency to our government. This is for us all a time of testing. In this period of confusion. shall we although disquieted be cast down into despair either for this college or ourselves or this land? Occidental's strength and spirit are not diminished. We will meet the responsibilities we must face: whatever the difficulties we will look with confidence and trust to the future: we will continue man's search for beauty, for truth, for love and for the peace of God: each will continue to seek the practical field of his maximum service to society under principle and under law. II Racking up a season total of 208 points to the opposition's 18, the 1950 Tigerbabes came through for the second straight year to cop the league title and remain undefeated under the tutelage of Coach Payton Jordan. The first game of the season saw Co-captains Holmes and Keehn lead the team to a 13 to 7 victory over the Pepperdine J.V. Scoring was done by Frain and Thornburgh. The next week saw the Baby Bengals run away with Caltech to the tune of 65 to 0. Captained by Tetley and Fallows, the team scored 10 touchdowns and made good 5 conversions. In the first home encounter, Oxy fans witnessed an inspired team, led by Lozano and DeCarolis, beat Whittier 38 to 0. Outstanding performances were turned in by Marimon, Tetley, Novinger, and Fallows. The following week took the Frosh to Antelope Valley J.C. where they chalked up a 41 to 0 victory. Hess, Cain, Moreno, and Harrington were the big guns in this one. The frosh next turned in a 34 to 6 game over a supposedly strong Redlandseeleven. Harrington, Wolters, Rafferty, Fallows, and Stiffler all scored. George Wright and Lou Moreno were game captains. The last game of the season saw an undefeated Oxy team facing an undefeated Pomona eleven. The game seemed to be in doubt until the last quarter when Rafferty and Lozano each racked up a T.D. making the final score a decisive 17-6. The team elected Tom Fallows and Jim Tetley as co-captains for the year and these boys were doubly honored when they received the Bud Collier Award for their outstanding play and leadership. Orchids also went to Student Assistant Jack Parkhurst for his fine work. Coach Payton Jordan talks it over with Hitch, Holmes, Frain Lewis and Tetley. This paved the way for the game of the season when second place cidental met first place Whittier for a possible tie for the SCIC cham- nship. The local squad did it, beating previously undefeated Whittier -60. This was accomplished by the efforts of last minute Bill Kel- g, who had recently returned from the service. Bill entered the game he last minute and with the score tied at 60-60 received a free shot, ich he missed. He grabbed the rebound and sunk the ball for the 2 ning points as the gun went otif. These boys and the rest of this year's squad should give the varsity squad members a good run for positions next season. ln their first outing, the Frosh defeated Pierce J.C. 58-51 in a very wild game. Moreno and Wakeman played an outstanding game with Ron Cooper giving great assistance. Next, the Babes downed Pomona 56-51, Cooper and Oredson were outstanding perform- ers. After beating Burbank High the Tiger Kits faced and lost their toughest game to a fighting Poetbabe quintet. Despite the 16 points tallied by Moreno, the Tigers lost in the last few minutes to the Whittier five 57-54. After downing Caltech and Redlands, the frosh- sters again prepared to meet Whittier. With the im- proved playing of such men as Jack McNally, Ron Cooper and Pat Delaney the Bengalbabes looked hope- fully towards the crucial Whittier Game. Like their older brothers, the Kits dropped a hard fought 54-46 decision to the Poets, and received an undisputed second place in the league. Two N.C.A.A. place winners headed the list of returning lettermen-Junior Johnny Barnes and Senior Walt McKibben. ln addition, other returning lettermen included Phil Schlegel, 1950 broadiump champion, Ted Ruprecht, member of the 3:1O.1 world champion mile relay team, Wilbur Cotrel, alternate mile relay team member, Harold Dennis, high hurdler, Don Jones, miler, Doug Martin and Don Oleson, weights, and Bill Straw, 2 miler. Up from the 1949 team as letterman was Chuck Schlegel who gave up track for his ASOC presidential duties in 1950. The list of newcomers was headed by Bob McMillen, 1948 Olympic Team mem- ber, one of the 5 best distance runners in the world and holder of the fastest 2 mile time in West Coast history, and Dick Shivers, transfer from Muir City College and second place winner in the pole vault at the National Jaycee Meet in 1950. The Sagehen team failed to show up due to a fiu epidemic at the Claremont school. Oxy's great foursome of Walt McKibben, Wilbur Cotrel, John Barnes and Bob McMillen turned in the outstanding performance of the day by racing the distance medley relay l440, 880, 1320, milel in the time of 10:07.1, clipping off 31.7 seconds from the SCIC record. Ted Ruprecht turned in two outstanding early season performances, copping the century in 10.1 and sprinting a 21.2 furlong in the 880 yard relay. The other three performers in this race were Bob Jackson, Joe Maruyama and Chuck Har- vey. Bill Straw, Don Munroe, Don Jones and Hal Butler teamed up to take a first in the mile relay with a time of 3:31.5. ln the Shuttle Hurdle Relay, Bill Bennett, Chuck Schlegel, Frank Asman and Hal Dennis came through to bring in another blue ribbon. SANTA BARBARA RELAYS Again placing second behind UCLA, the Tiger tracksters clipped nearly eight seconds off the 2 mile Santa Barbara Relays record and piled up two additional Firsts and one second to bring back a score of 3616. ln the 2 mile baton chase, Johnny Barnes tore off a siz- zling 1152.2 half-mile followed by Bob McMillen with 1:53. Bill Cotrel and Don Munroe rounded out the quartet which set the new record of 7:43.5. The local mile relay quartet, composed of Butler, Cotrel, Ruprecht and McKibben set another meet record when they toured the 4 laps in 3:l8.7, followed by UCLA and Pep- perdine. ln the distance medley event, the Bengals coasted to a win in 'lO:32.5. The remainder of the points came from a second in the 440 Yard Relay by Joe Maruyama, Chuck Schlegel, Bill Bennett and Ted Ruprecht. WHITTIER - POMONA Oxy's Walt McKibben took the limelight in an afternoon tri-meet with Whittier and Pomona, ripping off a 21 seconds flat 220 which set a new Oxy record as well as breaking the meet records. Pushed by the Sagehen's Roger Reinke, Walt broke the record which he set last year, again with Reinke as competition. The Tiger tracksters piled up 114W points to Whittier's 1635. The meet between Oxy and Pomona was unofficial, the Sagehens meeting the Bengals later in the season for oFl'icial SCIC records. However, the unofficial score was Oxy: 102 5X6 and Pomona 28 1f6. John Barnes ran a torrid 440, doing the lap in 48.1 and breaking both the Oxy-Whittier and Oxy-Pomona meet rec- ords. Bob McMillen also set new meet records, doing his favorite event, the 2 mile, in 9:25.7. Oxy copped blue ribbons in every event except the mile, which was won by Pomona, anchored by Reinke. Forty thousand track fans, including 45 percent of the Oxy student body, turned out to witness the Coliseum Relays on May 19 and saw the underdog Tiger Relay Quartet, Walt McKibben, Ted Ruprecht, John Barnes and Bill Parker, beat Morgan State in a 3 minute, 10.1 second timing, the second fastest winning time in track history. The Bengal foursome ran only seven-tenths of a second off the World record time of 3:9.4. Walt McKibben started out for the Tigers and gave Ruprecht a 1 yard lead. Ruprecht faded a little at the first of the second lap but came back strong at the finish and only 2 yards behind. Long Jawn Barnes took it from there and nipped Brown of Morgan State by 2 feet. The last lap was a fight to the finish between George Rhoden and the greatest Tiger of them all, Bill Parker. Bullet Bill won by 4 feet after a grueling back stretch drive. Rhoden made several attempts to pass, but Parker never slackened his pace and the Morgan State man iust couldn't keep it up. Lap times for the four were: Mc- Kibben, 48.1, Ruprecht, 48.4, Barnes, 47.1, and Parker, 46.5. ln a previous 440 that night Parker also ran a close second to Mal Whitfield who won in the time of 47s. flat. Rhoden was fresh, com- peting only in the relay. Bob McMillen, ineligible last year, turned in the sensational time of 9:02 in the 2 mile run, beating U.S.C.'s Chief Jim Newcomb by 25 yards. This was a new Coliseum record and a new West Coast mark. Two weeks later, on June 2, a small 'band of Oxy athletes trekked down to the Compton Relays and 'presented the Sports World with a few more surprises. Half-mile champ John Barnes upset Mal Whit- field, two time NCAA Champ, in the sizzling time of 1:52.6. Bill Parker again took a second place in the 440, this time losing by 4 inches to world record holder Herb McKinley who ran the lap in 47.0. Oxy again took the mile relay, this time in 3:12.9, running against San Jose State. On June 9, competing in the Southern Pacific AAU meet, Oxy took first places. Bill Parker ran the fastest 440, from starting blocks, in Oxy Mile Relay Quartette: Walt Mc- Kibben, Ted Ruprecht, John Barnes and Bill Parker. Photo by Lee Hansen. Herb McKinley took second and Oxy's Ted Ruprecht copped a fourth. ln the 220, Walt McKibben took a second 'behind ex-world record Lloyd LaBeach. Bob McMillen took the 2 mile in 9:27 and came back to take a second behind hCief Jim Newcomb in the mile. Newcomb did the 4 laps in 4:07.13 and McMillen was clocked in 4:07.8. Johnny Barnes broke the meet record and established a new Oxy mark in running the fastest 880 of his career, 1:51.1. The last big event was the NCAA track fest in Min- neapolis, Minnesota. The Orange and Black took 17 points to give them place number eight in NCAA stand- ings. Bullet Bill Parker came through with a third in the 440 and a sixth in the 220. Walt McKibben copped a fourth place in the 220 and Johnny Barnes brought back a third in the 880. -vu-me -lux Track Team. Top Picture. The Baby Bengals racked up 63 points as against second place Caltech with 31. Redlands and Whittier both followed with 4 each. Outstanding man was pole vaulter Adnah Frain who set a new Relays record at 11 ft. 10 in. Runners Dale Bruner and Paul Southgate also turned in good perform- ances for the day. The Tiny Tigers tipped the Whittier Poets in their first league dual meet of the season 108 to 21. Frain broke his own record with a vault of 12 ft. 6 in. .lon Speer was a double winner, cap- turing the 220 and 440. Linnie Larson was high man with 19 points, due to wins in the broadiump and both hurdles and a second in the discus. The next week, traveling to Caltech, the Frosh won handily by a score of 94-32. Highlight of the day was Duane Cain's spear toss of 176 feet, setting a new frosh record. ln addition, Cain won the discus and took a third in the shot. As we went to press, the frosh had two more league meets and were strongly favored to wind up league champs. Because of the lack of competition on their own level, the team competed in the same league as the Varsity. Therefore, in the words of Team Captain Bill George, The going was rough. Coached by Roy Dennis, the 1951 swimming team looked like a strong contender for SCIC honors. As we went to press, the Bengal mermen had downed Redlands 49-25, Whittier 59-15, and Pomona. However, Caltech looked strong and observers felt that the fight would be between Oxy and the Slide Rule men. Captain Bill Manning, 3 year letterman and school conference record holder in the 200 yard backstroke, brought in many points for the locals. Other point getters were Don Ragan in the 440 and 220, Jim Ensign in the 50 yard freestyle, Jerry McClusky and Charlie Bonham in the breaststroke, Don McCoy in the 50 and 100, and Warren Peterson in the freestyle. Cliff Sparrow held down the diving honors. Bob Adams also gathered points. The Tigers also faced such non-conference foes as Fullerton and Arizona. The Frosh Swimming Team, though small, showed quite a bit of talent and gained much experience for their coming varsity years. Bill George gathered many points in the distance swims as did Jack McNally in the breaststroke. Paul Axe and Doug Walton did the diving chores and Dud Frank showed great possibilities, chiefly in the backstroke.
