THE REVEREND DR. GEORGE MARTIN DAY, PROFESSOR OF SOCIOLOGY, to whom this book is dedicated, retires this year after twenty-seven years on the Occidental faculty. Born in American Fork, Utah, the son of a Presby- terian missionary to the Mormons, Dr. Day came to California when he was eight years old. He gradu- ated from San Raphael High School, and Hamilton College, Clinton, New York. While in college, he maiored in Greek and History, and became a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He took his Master's degree at Hamilton and graduated from San Francisco Theological Seminary. Upon gradu- ation from San Anselmo he was ordained a Pres- byterian minister. Thereafter he studied at the Universities of Halle and Marburg, in Germany, and at the University of Saint Petersburg, in Russia. While studying in Germany he met his fu- ture wife, Miss Ruth Baker, of Greencastle, Indiana. They were married in 1913. Mrs. Day is now pro- fessor of German at the University of Southern California. Serving from 1909 till 1917 as a Y.M.C.A. secretary in Russia, Dr. Day worked with prisoners of war in a Kiev concentration camp during World War I. Following the Bolshevik Revolution he returned to the United States in 1917 via Siberia. Dr. Day came to Occidental in 1923. He took his Ph. D. from U. S. C. in 1930. He is the author ofa sociological survey on the White Russian community in Hollywood, and numerous articles and reports. Dr. Day is past presi- dent of the Los Angeles Council of International Relations, past president of the University Dinner Club, past president of the Pacific Sociological So- ciety, and permanent secretary-treasurer of the Phi Beta Kappa Alumni association of Southern California, of which he was elected president in 1947. Among the courses for which Dr. Day will always be remembered at Occidental are Social Control and Progress, Comparative So- cial Institutions, Economic Geography, and other Sociology and Russian language classes. Dr. Day's twin daughters, Carroll and Mar- garet, graduated from Occidental in 1936.
