my frngers My mrnd wandered back through the vears and vrvrd prctures of past school days came rnto my memory It was September rn 1926 when we were led to the prr mary chool by our parents to begrn twelve years of work and play We were scared and excrted and hated the thought of berng l ft alone at school We knew not what thrs as that we were gettrng rnto and only hoped for the best Twenty erght Keeney and Carolrne Parnter left durmg the frrst grade One day the teacher asked Harry Terrell who has always been noted for hrs brg mouth rf he was yawnrng No replred Harry that was onlv my srlent lndran war whoop lt was such fun to learn to wrrte our names and to read and scnool drdn t seem such a bad place after all In fact w rather lxked rt We had only two enemres when our frrst year was completed the ruler and the cloak room These seemed to be our teachers pet form of punrshment But rn prte of these Tom Krlgore trll managed to be a constant trouble maker Charles Close entered the class rn the second grade makrng a total of twenty nrne Three new members were added to our enrollment durrn the thrrd grade Vrvran Horne Robbrc Wrllrams and jewel Overstreet Theo Bla lock and Teresa Herntz left us thrs year to attend the Catholrc school Wrth the completron of the thrrd crade rt was neces attend grammar school Our frrst ambrtron was completed Now we were really gettrng somewhere The fourth grade seemed terrrbly hard and there were nranv thrrrgs for us to become accustomed to Rev Wrthers Brshop and Ralph Mrxon jorned our class At the befrnnrng of the frfth grade Mr W I1 Brshop became our new prrnrrpal Several new teachers were added to the facultv Trme was passrng, and Toms punrshment was rowmg more severe Now rt was the offrce and the thlck paddle It was at thrs trme that we hrt a new hrgh wrth ten jornrng us They were Mane Hansard Martha Fokes Ruby McCann Claude Hrll Lexton Shackelford Allre Srgner Freeman Teuton Llewelln Todd and last but not least a never farlrnt, Knoblock Katherrne rt was As the old sayrng goes rn the sprrng., a young mans fancy turns to lovc Defrnrtely was rt so wrth our Romeo Lexton Shackelford What a frt he drd x.,rve hrs mothers flower garden wrth each new crush Thrs seems to have contrnued through Lexton s entne school career Brll Stroud left thrs year but returned wrthrn two years to hrs orrgrnal class Many of these students wrll recall the prcture that was made thrs year What a drfference srx years can make Durrn the srxth Irade our enrollment drd not Increase but lost two of rts members Vrrgrnra Kelly and Mane Hansard who went to the Catholrc school Romance was rn the arr Such was the case of Mary Catherme Adams and Ralpr Chambers l-low well we remember those sweet looks that Mary Catherme would always grve Ralph The next year we felt strll more superror to our under class mates We now occupred the rooms of the top floor of the grammar school and not only drd we chance rooms every trme the bell ran but also teachers trng., to be much like hrgh school whrch ambrtron at the moment Our enrollment crease nor profrted by an lncrease at thrs Fokes left us and Phillip Goldman jorned us Thrs was get was our hl hest suffered no cl trme as Martha ust one year more and we would be How we loved thrs tlcought Our erghth rn hrgh stool year was very eventful and enjoyable A safety councrl was organrzed and those rn It attarned hrgh recognrtron for therr good work Davene Hunter and H M Hodges entered our class Our graduatron exercrses were held at the hrgh school audr torrum on the frnal mornrng of the school term Mrss Anne ROOIWY and Mrs Augusta Hrllman were our sponsors l' ICHTEEN and they helped us to make our graduatron a !11Cm0T3bIC and beautiful one 'Vlr Stephen McCreadey awarded us our drplomas The class party was held at the home of Rachel Stern and after thrs enjoyable affarr we departed only to gather together agarn the next year on a forergn shore Our frrst thought when we entered hugh school was the fear of bent, ratted The boys were put through the usual belt lrne and chased after therr shoes rn the terrrble sandspurs The gxrls had to roll pencrls wrth therr noses all the way across the gym floor Of course we rats got mrxed up and erther got rnto the wrong, class room or walked agarnst traffrc rn the halls jornrng our class were Bob Keeney Lawrence Shashy Arch Shealy Bernard Watts Mary Travrs Vrrgrma Kelly Teresa Hemtz Theo Blalock Frances Nlell Danxel and ohn Lyles Mrs Davrs was elected our sponsor and wrth her ard we ave a krd party for the graduatrn-1 class at the Hotel Nla ron lt was qurte a success Such srghts we were once avarn rn our play surts and overalls and barefooted So ended our frrst year rn hrgh scxool Our tenth year brought harder work rn our studres Along wrth thrs came a new form of dlsclpllne the de tentron hall You could always frnd Tom srttmg., there rn punrshment for hrs talkrn or hrs wrse cracks Remember the dry that Shashy asked Mr Blewett f he could get a credrt for detentron halll lt seems that he stayed as long, rn there as any class that he attended Thrs year our clrss was well represented rn the band rn mayor athletrcs and rn other school organrzatrons Mrs Hardy was our sponsor Enterrng our class Cobb ohn Gray I ranl Nrcholson rmmy Self Vlartha Fokes and I-rrrma Lee Roberson were Charles Squrres Nell We gave the senror class the annual splash party at lake Werr Ther was plenty of food good musrc and frolrckrng After a restful vacatron we answered the call of educa tron rn September for our eleventh year At thrs trme Caro lxne Parnter Ruth Parker Paul Vanderhoek and Vrvran Sherrdan jorned our class Bernard Watts better known Grumpy furnrshed the romantrc rnterest for the ma anuual junror Halloween Carnrval rn the Many amusrn booths were drsplayed and rnterestrng games were played After the crownrn of the queen the crowd enjoved dancrng We held the hrgh school yrn You can t beat the good old days rn hrstory class One day Bob Keeney walked rnto the room Mrs Davrs spoke to Bob drd not hear her and yourneyed on to hrs seat Davrs sard Bob you surely are stuck up hrm Mrs Yes chrmed Bully Terrell stuck up on two legs Durrng, the caterprllar sea on Frank Nrcholson pro ceeded to decorate Ann Meadows neck wrth a couple of the crawlrng, fur coats After squrrmrng rn her seat for a few mrnutes he was asked bv Mrs Davrs why she was so restless Arn replred lf vou were wormy youd squrrm too l was decided by the class to rve a prom for the senror class rnsteid of a banquet as usual Wrth the coooeratron of Mrss Plllans our sponsor and the members of our class we made thrs party a very successful one I was h ld at the Ocala Highlands Hotel Kms, Cole and The Srlver Krngs furnrshed th musrc The yumors were com Dlrmented hrghly because of thrs enjovable affarr At last our senror year came Wrth rt was much ex cxtement and joy The season started off wrth a bang The senror class was well represented on the first strrng foot bal' tean H M Hodges and Charles Cobb were co captarns TThe team had a very successful year Home con mf., when we played Leesburg was ourte a day for everyone Mane Hansard and Theo Blalock were sponsors for the game The chapel program pep parade game and dance all contrrbuted to the excrtement Even though we were defeatea by our brtter rrvals our team showed sportsmanshrp and played a fme game good The Ellrs Wrllramson and Harry Terrell as captarns The track team and baseball team drd s well Brll Stroud and H M Hodges were captarns rn track Though our baseball team
