The Chrnstmas Operetta ...--u-ai Red Candles Mrs Nansen had come to this country from Norway with her two children Gilda and Jibby to claim an inheritance Just after they landed she left to seek information and never returned Th1s happened on Christmas Eve five years prior to the pre sent Christmas Eve, when we find Gtlda and Jlbby welcome the carol singers to their living room Lawyer Snidge the children s new guardian, arrives with his son and daughter and two of their friends Snldge tells Gilda he IS sending her and Jlbby away to school obviously because he wants them out of the way so he can have the use of their home Gxlda is d1smayed at the thought of being separated from Jibby, but her protests are in vain Smdge tells that he ls sendmg them away immediately after Chr1stmas Gilda hghts candles :ln the window hopmg against hope that they will prove a magnet to draw her mother to them 'I'he carolers return and Gllda conceals her despondency as they smg a happy song Madam Clara, a cateress, has come with Mabel to help get the basket ready for the poor famihes She notices her picture on the table and ls mystified by 1ts presence Lawyer Snldge arrives and mentions his plans for the children and on hearing the1r names Madam Clara realizes that she is the childrens mother Due to an accident five years prior she suffered a complete loss of memory I X X .
