Seated: Joan Young, Beverly Berg, Mary Lou Habecker, Nellie Walker, Barbara Stechow. Not pictured: Mr, Richard Hoops, assistant director. Dear Ruth, a two-act farce by Norman Krasna, was presented by the senior class in Hall Auditorium on April 9 and 10. The large stage of the auditorium and its ex- cellent lighting and orchestra facilities provided staging effects and background never possible before. The fine directing of Mrs. Nairn, assisted by Richard Hoops, an Oberlin College student, plus the hard Work of a good cast resulted in a most enjoyable presentation of a good play. In this hilarious comedy, a young girl corre- sponds romantically with a soldier overseas, using U31 the name and picture of her older sister, Ruth. Ruth is already engaged and when the soldier comes home unexpectedly, a most amusing and complicated situation results. The cast were: Dora, the maid-Nellie Walker, Mrs. Edith Wilkins-Barbara Stechow, Miriam Wilkins-Mary Lou Habecker, Judge Harry XVilkins-Ralph Fox, Ruth Wilkins- Joan Young, Lt. William Seawright-Dick Aughenbaugh, Albert Kummer-jim Getty, Martha Seawright--Beverly Berg, Sgt. Chuck Vincent-Lee Smith, Harold Klobbermeyer- Peter Arnold. Band has always been one of the most active musical organizations in the school. This year, under Mr. XXfeldon's able guidance, the band provided some pretty snappy half-time entertainment at the football games, gave a spring concert, and played host to the Clearview, Amherst, and Wfellington bands in the annual Southwestern Conference Band Festival held this year in Oberlinls Hall Auditorium. A small German band, The Polka Dots, played for several pep-rallies and red-and-blue games. Mr. Weldtnn deserves a special vote of thanks for his patience and hard work in making the band this year one of the best ever in O. H. S. history. Instrumental music at O, H. S. received quite a boost this year thanks to the enthusiasm of the BOP, Band and Orchestra Parents Association. They sponsored two roller-skating parties and a very suc- cessful variety show, and they collected tax stamps and merchandise tokens to raise money for music racks, school instruments, etc. Again, thanks goes to Mr. Vifeldon for much time and energy put into this project, as well as to the parents who worked with him. ORCHESTRA The orchestra this year was a small but hard-working group and did a fine job in the Spring Concert and in providing music for the Senior Play. In the District Solo and Ensemble Contest at Fairview in March, Oberlinls forty contestants entered in thirty-six events. They were the largest delegation there and won first place in thirty events and second place in six, a record of which they can be proud. I SENIOR HIGH GIRLS' GLEE CLUB I These girls, under the direction of Miss Helen Thompson and Miss Hilda Magdsick, with Anne Brainerd at the piano, made some of the most lovely music at O. H. S. this year. They looked very at- tractive in the neat choir robes for the Christmas Pageant and really beautiful in their pastel formals as they did their part in the Spring Concert. JUNIOR HIGH GIRLS' GLEE CLUB The junior High Girls' Glee Club, under the direction of Miss Magdsiclc and Mrs. Magerkurth of the Conservatory, gave a very fine performance in the annual Christmas program and also sang for the spring P. T. A. meeting for sixth graders and their parents at Pleasant Street School. Several different Conservatory students were accompanists for the groupg and Judy Thompson, a talented eighth grade student, served in this capacity also, DANCE BAND Bark Roux' Marian Bickel, jim Brooks, David Dewey, Joan Lauer, Peggy Strickling, Larry Lauer, Jim Ross, Victor Macha, Mr. Richard XX!eldon, Leader. The Senate was instrumental in improving high school-college relations, in establishing a system of hall monitors, and in settling several matters of school policy. Through the Senate's informative discus- sions, each homeroom's representative learned about democratic procedures in school government. O-HIGH LIGHTS Under the excellent editorship of Beverly Petter, and with Miss May as advisor, the O-High Lights' staff members met every Monday noon during the school year. With each member responsible for a definite news beat, the staff attempted to give com- plete coverage of the school news. Their articles appeared each Thursday on the school page in the local newspaper. FINE ARTS CLUB Under the leadership of Miss Schramm and Miss Grills as advisors, the Fine Arts Club had a very good year. The officers of the group were Anne Turner, president, Beverly Pettet, vice-presi- dent, Carol King, secretary, Ada Lee Holloway, treasurer, and Carol Beese, social chairman. The traditional initiation activity started at the Allen Art Museum where the new members had all sorts of make-up plastered on them, after which they were led through town and out to the college athletic field. The following week the formal initiation was held where all members agreed to keep the tryst. The club this year had some very enjoyable programs. These included a talk on Civil De- fense, after which money was donated to the Civil Defense program, a Christmas party and gift ex- change, a talk on Girls' State, a showing of slides of the Simpsons' trip West in the summer of 1955, a talk on India, and a Mother-Daughter Tea. On the last day before Christmas vacation, the club sang carols in the halls at school and also collected money and canned goods for needy families. In addition they sponsored a very suc- cessful Christmas Formal for the school, The weekend house party in May marked the end of a very enjoyable and profitable year. They received pins which they wear during their year in office. Each member receives points for attending the meetings and helping in extra activities of the club. The money collected from the bake sale and dues was used to buy material to make curtains for the Home Economics room. In February we had a Valentine Banquet at the Inn. Our speaker, Mr. Arthur Campbell, showed us pictures of his travels in Europe last year. In the spring we had a picnic where the new officers were chosen for the coming year. JUNIOR RED CROSS With Miss Pease as advisor and Jim Davidson as president, the junior Red Cross Council experienced a successful year. In November, members of the County Junior Red Cross Council presented an excel- lent talent show as the culmination of the membership drive. By collecting 386.59 in the fall mem- bership campaign and sending overseas gift boxes in the spring, the Council made its annual contribu- tion to international friendship. A. is an organization for all girls in grades 9 through I2 who are interested in par- ticipating in sports and other related social ac- tivities. The traditional initiation of the freshmen at the Arb began the G. A. A. year. A week later the freshmen started to play their first real hockey game. Black and blue shins were in order by the time the Red and Blue hockey teams were chosen. The Blue team, captained by Shirley Rogers, won a decisive victory over the Reds, led by Ada Lee Holloway. The basketball season followed with the sen- iors taking honors in the class tournament. On the night of the Red and Blue game all senior girls were honored. Under the captaincy of Caro- lyn McDole, the Reds won 38-19 over the Blues, under Pat Douglas. After a surprise vacation, due to the weather, all G. A. A. girls came back with renewed vigor, ready to plunge into clss volleyball. IC Association On March 27th Oberlin had the pleasure of welcoming girls from Wellington, Ridgeville, and Amherst for a basketball-volleyball playday. Every- one enjoyed our newly-acquired friends. In the spring came the softball season with fun and dust for all. The G. A. A. had several banquets and trips before the year ended. Who will ever forget the Red and Blue banquets at Martin's Inn or all the hard work put in at the food stand during football season? In the conclusion of another year of work and play, let us hope that everyone has had a won- derful time and will never forget these many worthwhile events and experiences. The members of G. A. A. give many thanks to Miss Grills, who spent untold time and effort in patiently directing our activities. 1 Hockey SENIORS Ada Lee Holloway Barbara Stechow Nellie Walker Carolyn McDole Pauline Gutman Pat Douglas Karole Payne Mary Lou Habecker Marilou Cook Shirley Rogers Beverly Berg Anne Turner Sue Wolfe Joan Hurd Miss Grills, coach JUNIORS Jean Carpenter Carolee Bachrel Norma Lawson Meritha Stokes Leona Freed Peggy Lillich Marianne Cochrane Judy Kaiser Carol Beese Alfreda Miller Shirley Krueger Connie Moore Pat Folk Carol King SOPHOMORES Marilyn Oakley Nancy Lecraft Ann Gross Linda Durfee Georgia Payne Myrna Morton Carol Hurst Connie Tirch Nancy Simpson Judy Davidson Barbara Kern Helen Peabody FRESHMEN Judy Carder Peggy Strickling Gail Stang Dorothy Berg Jane Siddall Barbara Tenney Connie Hitchens Jean Kinsey Dorothy Owen Rose Hurd Leigh Murphy Kay Edmonds Barbara McCloud Louise Holloway Basketball SENIORS Anne Turner Beverly Berg Shirley Rogers Carlene Clark Pat Douglas Pat Scroggins Karole Payne Carolyn McDole Pauline Gutman Ada Holloway Peggy Ritter Marilou Cook, Captain JUNIORS Judy Kaiser Carol King Leona Freed Peg Lillich Connie Moore Carol Beese Sara Barnard Edna Atkinson Meritha Stokes Marianne Cochrane Emma Atkinson, captain SOPHOMORES Carol Hurst Helen Peabody Georgia Payne Myrna Morton -Ienell Stokes Nancy Lecraft Nancy Simpson Connie Tirch Judy Davidson, captain FRESHMEN Gail Stang Jean Kinsey Kay Edmonds Barbara Martin Barbara McCloud Loretta Butler Peggy Strickling jane Siddall Dorothy Owen Emily Ken nedy, captain Volleyball SENIORS Doris Heilman Sue Wolfe Gloria Kunkler Marilou Cook Carolyn McDole Karole Payne Ada Holloway Anne Turner Pat Scroggins JUNIORS Emma Atkinson Carol Robinson Peggy Lillich Marianne Cochrane Carol King Judy Kaiser Leora Freed Carolee Bachtel Alfreda Miller Merirha Stokes Mary Lee McQueen SOPHOMORES Inga Bachnika Myrna Morton Nancy Lecraft Marilyn Oakley Linda Durfee Lois Ann Dickinson Jean Berg Connie Tirch Nancy Simpson Judy Davidson Helen Peabody FRESHMEN Judy Carder Peggy Strickling Diane Kilgore Dorothy Berg jane Sidclall Emily Kennedy Gail Stang Connie Hitchens Alice Brickell Barbara Martin Leigh Murphy Barbara McCloud Louise Holloway Dorothy Owen RED and BLUE TEAMS Field Hockey REDS BLUES RED TEAM - Stazzzfingx Dorothy Berg, Connie Tirch, BLUE TEAM - Stuzzffizzg' Nellie Walker, Alfreda Miller, Linda Durfee, Marilou Cook, Mary Lou Habecker, Carol Carolyn McDole, Pauline Gutman, Pat Scroggins, Pat Hurst, Shirley Rogers. The team's average weight was 155 pounds, and, as a result, most observers picked Oberlin to win two games at the most. Coach Campbells gridders rounded out the season with a four and four record. After winning their first game, they took the back seat for a few games before returning to the winning column. Honorary cere- monies were held for the player's parents during the half-time of the Fairview game. Oberlin returned to the field in the second half of this game to close their third game. The high point of the season came when Oberlin set back Rocky River with a score of 33 to 15. The backfield was sparked by senior, Don Wicks, who was elected to the first All Southwestern Team. Other outstanding backfieldmen were seniors Don Martin and Sam Coleman and sophomore Jerry Gyorgy. The line was boosted by jon Nasipak, who was 'selected as one of the linemen on the second All Southwestern Team. Letters were presented to twenty-four players at the football banquet which was held in the Pleasant Street School cafeteria. Senior Football Men are '89 YY, .M Q ' 1 12' www -1 ga W. The team dropped all of their games, and consequently ended in the cellar of the Cleveland Southwestern League. Though the varsity had hard sledding, the reserves had a fair record, which looks prom- ising for the years to come. Much of the burden next year will be on the shoulders of Charles Dewey, Dick Dewey, Frank Palczer, Harry Bryant, Don Bungard, and Jack Coniam. High point man this year was freshman, Jack Coniam, with 180, who was followed closely by Dick Dewey with 165. Dick Dewey was chosen to play in the March of Dimesn game, played in the Oberlin College field house. Let's wish Coach Coleman the best of luck in the '54-55 season. The A.B.C. basketball team had a very suc- cessful season, losing only two out of the ten games they played.
