The Senate is a group composed of representatives which have been elected by each homeroom. Under this year's President, jim Ellis, they have settled many problems concerning the student body. The sound advice and enthusiasm of Mr. Ross, our principal and Student Senate Advisor, promise to make this group an increasingly effective way for students to take part in the gov- ernment of the school. Junior Red Cross . . . The Junior Red Cross Council con- sisted of two representatives from each homeroom. Miss Pease was the advi- sor for the group, and the officers for the year were Phil Shaver, presidentg and Billie Havanas, secretary-treasurer. A membership drive was conducted, and 370.89 was collected by this means. Later, boxes of supplies for children were packed and shipped. library Assistants . . S. jones M. Baldt C. Moore P. Each week, news items, features, editorials, und the well-liked Chit n' Chat column have provided students and townspeople with tt good picture of school life. FINE ARTS CLUB Under the leadership of Miss Schramm and Miss Grills as advisors, the Fine Arts Club began the year by electing the following officers: Barbara Bedell, president, Peggy Peabody, vice- president, Anne Turner, secretary, Beverly Berg, treasurer, and Judy Spaulding, social chairman. In the traditional initiation the new members were led blindfolded to the Carruthers' new barn, where they were fed the usual conglomeration of strange foods, ranging from cold macaroni to raw oysters. The formal initiation the following week symbo- lized the club's deeper meaning of friendship, in- spiration, and high ideals. The insignia of the club was changed from Fine Arts sweaters to dainty little sterling-silver pins. This club was one of the sponsors of the Christmas Formal, and they enjoyed many inter- esting programs. These included Mr. Campbell's talk on vocational guidance, a gift exchange at Christmas, a musical evening at the Stechow's, Nadine Powers' cosmetician demonstration, a col- lege girl's description of life in her native land of Hawaii, and Miss Upton's talk on England in the summer of 1955. The weekend house party in May marked the close of a most enjoyable year. ETC HI-Y CLUB... The Hi-Y Club, under the sponsorship of Mr. Stewart Fairchild, provided a program of varied activities for its members. The boys attended conferences, had speakers ad- dress the group, and participated in swimming and basketball. The club also acted as a sponsor for the Christmas Formal. 5 O.H.S. BAND The band under the leadership of Mr. Thomas Gayters, started the year by present- ing entertaining half-time programs at the football and basketball games. Those mem- bers who were lucky enough to go to Southwestern Conference Band Festival at Wel- lington or the Music Contest at Clearview, will always remember this interesting and valuable experience. The band also played for some pep rallies and assemblies. It ended the year with a Spring Concert. I X I 96, A ,Q Q I 'P' Y S' , Q I SENIOR HIGH GIRLS' GLEE CLUB I5 The Senior Girls' Glee Club was under the direction of Miss Hilda Magdsick and two conservatory seniors, Mr. George Rose and Mr. Dalton Baldwin. At Christmas time, the group presented a beautiful pageant and program of Christmas music. The Spring Concert, which was the culmination of their year's work, was marked by both the attractiveness of the group dressed in pastel frocks and the beauty of the music which they performed so well. ORCHESTRA The Orchestra has participated in three major programs during the year. They played for the Christmas pageant, for the Senior Play, and in the Spring Concert. ZS JUNICR HIGH GIRLS' GLEE CLUB This group of girls was directed by Miss Hilda Magdsick and Mrs. Joyce Schroder and had Miss Edith Plandeerman as an accompanist. They participated in the presen- tation of the Christmas program and the Spring Concert. l37l Sl GIRLS' ENSEMBLE The girls' ensemble is a group of girls selected for superior vocal and musical ability. Under the direction of Miss Hilda Magdsick and with Mr. Dalton Baldwin as accom- panist, this group has presented some fine programs. These girls have carried the solo parts in the Glee Club and have sung in school assemblies. Later in the semester, the ensemble took an active part in community club programs and in the annual Spring Concert. DANCE BAND The dance band was back again this year working hard to furnish music for the senate-sponsored dances. Aided by the trumpet playing of Mr. Gayters, the dance band had a successful year and made a real contribution to our school parties. HOME ECONOMICS CLUB Under the direction of Miss Doane and the club officers, Mary Mitchel, president: Gloria Kunkler, vice-presidentg and Nancy Olson, secretary-treasurer, a year of interest- ing programs and good times was enjoyed by the girls. Their program consisted of an initiation and costume party, a dinner for the boys of the agriculture class, a plastic party, a splash party, and talks on cosmetics and hair- styling. I5 SPCJRTS FOOTBALL. The Oberlin Indians' Football team had a very successful season. Because of the encourag- ingly large number of boys reporting for football, Coach Boyd Robinson was able to use the two- platoon system even more effectively this year than in the past. The tribe won the first game over Berea and followed this victory with two more over Medina and Vermilion. While Fair- view did not prove to be the stronger team, it was able to cash in on some breaks in the game, to give Oberlin its first loss of the season. The tribe bounced back and won over Rocky River and Amherst only to get defeated at Wellington. The team ended its season by defeating Clearview. With this victory Oberlin earned its third straight Lorain County Championship title and clinched Oberlin 13 ,kc Oberlin 20 W, nc, Oberlin 55 W, M-- Oberlin 19 an nc, Oberlin 40 ,cc Oberlin 31 B-.- C-- Oberlin 21 ,cc cn, Oberlin 17 N- ---- 1421 second place in the Cleveland Southwestern Con- ference. The Oberlin Booster's Club sponsored a par- ents' night at the Vermilion game. They also gave the Annual O. H. S. Football banquet where twenty-six players were awarded letters. Four-letter-man Bob Bryant sparked the tribe's performance all the way this year. Bob was outstanding in defense as well as in offense, play- ing all but 50 seconds of Oberlin's eight games. He ran up a total of 159 points in this year's competition. Bob Bryant, Andy Stofan, and Lorenzo Walker were placed on the All-League Football Squad for being outstanding players of the year. Dick Berg scored 289 points to take top honors in the scoring department, followed by Bob Bryant with 182, and Neal Shannon with 139. These three boys were also selected for places on the Southwestern Conference All-Star Team. B. C. TEAM I-471 . TRACK. tu. ' ' f ' Oberlin High School had an unusually good track team last year. The season started with a dual meet at Elyria. Elyria edged Oberlin 61M to 56M. This meet was followed by a good show- ing at the Mansfield relays, a meet where 74 class A and B schools with 965 boys came from all over Ohio to participate. The biggest accomplishment for the Indian's cindermen was the victory at the Delaware meet, with 27 points. The Indians won two events, the 400-yard relay and the 480-yard shuttle-hurdle re- lay and placed second in the 880-yard relay. They captured third place in the distance medley relay, mile relay, and shot put, and a fourth place in the spring medley relay 1440, 220, 8805. At a triangular meet with Rocky River and Elyria, the team could not get started, but at the Orange Relays, the team let off some steam and l48l . Y. r f -wmv-.w really rolled. From a field of 15 teams, Oberlin won with 39Mz points followed by Cuyahoga Heights with 39 points, a really close contest. Oberlin took top honors for the second year in a row in the Cleveland Southwestern Confer- ence track meet. Rocky River came in second. Our team compiled eight firsts, three seconds, two thirds, and a tie for third, one fourth, and two fifths to score 66Vj points. Bob Bryant broke his old record in the discus with a throw of 140 feet, 692 inches. The district meet also went the Indians' Way and qualified 12 members for the State Meet, but at Columbus the competition got too tough. The cindermen did not do as well as was expected of them but wound up in a tie for sixth place with 10 points. Bob Bryant placed second in shot put, and third in high hurdles. The 880-yard relay team also placed fourth. Track Stars SHOT PUT Bob Bryant SHUTTLE HURDLE RELAY Bob Bryant N. Shannon D. Wicks R. Moreno MILE RELAY R. Oakley W. Edwards B. Konicek R. Beese, Miss Grills-Faculty Advisor, M. McDole Ckneelingl, A. Turner, Sue Wolfe, M. Cochrane, M. Cook, Pat Scroggins. The Girls, Athletic Association gives all high school girls a chance to participate in a sports pro- gram which includes hockey, volleyball, basketball, and softball. From these girls the class teams are selected, and they play each other for the champ- ionship. After this is won, the Red and Blue pick their teams from the best players in each class, and their game is played. These sports give the girls a chance to learn better sportsmanship and cooperation, to promote better health rules, and to participate in sports. I50l Throughout this year, Miss Grills, the faculty advisor, Marilyn McDole, the president, and the G. A. A. board have planned many activities be- sides the intramural sports. These activities in- cluded the initiation at the waterworks, the hayride to Hurst's farm, the food stand at the football games, the trip to the Ice Follies, and the banquets before the Red and Blue games. A membership in the G. A. A. is a rewarding and unforgettable experience. Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen UU n G. A.A Hockey Back row: Front row: C. Nasipak P. Peabody M. Hitchens -I. Foster P.
