O-HIGH PLAYERS Productions this year by O-High Players, Ober- lin Highs dramatic association. were limited to as- semblies and skits held at club meetings. Among the assemblies given for the high school was Mush- rooms Coming Up, falso given to the Bee Keep- ers' Society of Lorain County ll and among the skits were The Stupid Witness, johnny and his Pa, and Gratitude, Extensive alterations were made on the stage this year: beige backdrops of a newer and better type than the old ones and two new rheostats for dim- ming the stage lights and footlights were purchased. Miss Merthe, faculty adviser to the organization, held classes in make-up and pantomime, and a change in the award pins was made for eligible senior members on graduation. In the spring, the senior class presented the play Youth Takes Over by Betty Smith and Robert Finch. The story of Youth Takes Over reminds one of the antics of Henry Aldrich and the comedy Whitt :1 Life! so popular with high schools a few years ago. The setting of Youth Takes Over is also the principals office of the high school. The main character, Albert Willitiins, sixteen years old, has a knack for getting into trouble, and everything is blamed on him. The principal, hoping to re- form Albert by giving him responsibility, appoints him head of the l.eague of Young Citizens. ' I I' l' Q' ln order to raise money for the organization, Albert produces a carnival and prints paper money to encourage wild spending. The carnival goes along smoothly until the sponsor, a rich dowager. loses 550,000 on a gambling invention of Alberts Wlien the principal demands that Albert refund the money, the receipts of the evening are discov- ered missing. Act two ends with mass confusion. Everything is Hnally straightened out when the dowager decides she is pleased with all the publicity and when Pop, the janitor, says that he deposited the receipt in the bank during the carnival. Al- berts name is cleared, and he is made the president of the League for an unlimited time. The play has a great many character parts - Pop, the lovable old janitorg Mr. Andrews, the absent minded Latin professorg and Miss Gunther, the flirtatious old maid-as well as the typical high school students and faculty members. She completed her college training at Ohio State in 1940, and has studied at Miami University and Ohio State during two summers since then. In addition to her biology and gym classes, she has capably headed the G. A. A. for the past six years, and this year she was the senior sponsor of the Fine Arts Club, too. Only a girl who has served on the G. A. A. board during her four years in high school can begin to realize the great amount of time Miss Grills gives to making this organization the success which it is. A. again had a very interest- ing year. The club's activities began with the an- nual picnic in the arboretum and with the initiation of the new freshmen members by the sophomores. The girls' enthusiastic response to the hockey season provided the classes with many vigorous. ex- citing games, The senior class won the inter-class hockey tournament, and the Red and Blue all-star game took place soon afterward. Under the bright lights of the football field, the Blues won a hard- earned victory over the Reds with a score of I-0, The winter weather drove the girls into the gym, and the volleyball tournament commenced. The juniors won the plaque for this sport. and the Blues were again victorious in the all-star game, The ever-popular basketball season with its large turn-out began with the inter-class games and culminated with the much anticipated Red and Blue game on March IZ. The fast moving action kept the score tied until the final moments of the last quarter. Witli added vigor, the Blues made two quick baskets, ending the game I8-I-f The team members and the spectators seemed thorough- ly to enjoy this excellent exhibition of girls' basket- ball. That evening. during the half-time period, a German hand amused the audience, and the various l42l sports trophies were awarded to the winning classes. The juniors received the plaque for volleyball, and the seniors were presented with both the hockey plaque and the much coveted basketball trophy. After the game, the G. A. A. provided dancing in the gym to the music of Ifrnestine Bare's band. Taking over the management of the food stand this year, the G, A. A. supplied hot dogs. cokes. and candy bars for the spectators at the football games. The hard work of the chairman, Arlene Hurst. made this venture a big success and added many dollars to the treasury. The traditional banquets and parties were held again this year. The Red and Blue members of the various all-star teams enjoyed the dinners given before their games, and the annual sports banquet on February 9 was attended by the whole club. During the Christmas season, the association had a most successful party. with caroling, food. and pres- ents. A group of girls presented 'Twas the Night before Christmas. and a very jolly Santa, Molly Marshall, distributed the gifts, liveryone had a good time. In May the Oberlin Inn was the scene of the final social gathering of the members. The awards for the vear's work were given. the officers for the following year were announced. and the seniors were bid farewell. -4 f T' .A 4 'J E 'L .,y 'E . ., - ..L-y.
