A1bert Camus 18 20 Both Sides Now Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air and feathered canyons in the air IIve looked at clouds that way. But now they only block the sun they rain and snow on everyone; so many things I could have done but clouds got in my way. IIve looked at clouds from both sides now from win and lose and still somehow itIs cloudsI illusions I recall I really dontt know Clouds at all. Moons and Junes and ferris wheels the dizzy, dancing way you feel 7 as every fairy tale comes real IIve looked at love that way. But now itIs just another show You,1l leave them laughing when you go. And if you care dont let them know dont give yourself away. Itve looked at love from both sides now from give and take and still somehow, itIs love illusions I recall. I really dont know love at all. Tears and fears and feeling proud To say I love you right out loud. Dreams and schemes and circus crowds IIve looked at life that way. But now old friends are acting strange They shake their heads, they say Itve Changed. Well somethings lost but somethingIs gained in living everyday. IIve looked at life from both sides now a from up and down and still somehow itts lifets illusions recall I really dontt know life at all. e Judi Collins I College Of Arts And Sciences .wkvvdun -.-m...-.w...a. Esquivel is a lead- er of the liberation theology movement in Latin America which emphasizes the idea that religion and politics cannot be separat- ed. He stressed that although the theology is Catholic in origin, people ofall faiths can believe in it and act upon these beliefs. He hopes for true democracy throughout Latin America and feels that the US. is directly involved with many of the problems faced in this region. For a week or so afterwards, tthough unfortunately no longert, Bloomis talk was the topic of many conversations as well as a symposium given a few days later featuring Oberlin professors Nathan Greenberg. Ronald Kahn. and Carol Lasser. The question of relativism as a moral issue tended to prevail. - Bloom: relativism ends up with our incapacity to say that facism is bad ttEvery movement wants to interpret the world in terms of its specific problem. We have to recognize, perhaps, thejustice 0f the claims but we have to be very resistant to reworking the world just to solve the problem. i Lasser 0n Bloomis concept of itgreat conversations with one's peers: ttAllan Bloom 15 not concerned about those not in the conversation . . . It is a tense and strangely metaphysical psychodrama 0f frayed nerves and failed aspirations, and the ultimate futility of blind, unthinking hero worship Guided by DePaulhs strong directing, the cast gave a fine ensemble performance of Ullianhs play. All in all! a marvelous evening of theater. Perhaps because since his 1982 album debut he was received critical acclaim and awards including the Best Male Jazz Vocalist and Best Vocal Arranger Grammy Awards in 1986 for his work on the llAnothcr Night in Tuni- sia track on the Manhattan Transfers Vocalese album. Perhaps because people had seen his ad for Levils 501 blue- jeans. But what of the concert? 7 In a style purely his own, McFerrin performed such tunes as llThinkin. About Your Body. tlFrom Me To You . and his closing piece, Manana Iguana . Further, he put forth a sing-altersme improv and a musical paraphrasing of The Wizard 0f0:, complete with a perfect declaration of llWho killed my sisterW' and the final wuter-on-thc-witch meltdown. He also came out into the sold-out Finncy crowd and sang some improvs with members oli the audience Those who attended the concert will certain- ly never forget it. For the first time the Hi-O-Hi makes its appearance in Oberlin College, and it is the hope of the editors and, we trust, of all the loyal sons and daughters of our beloved institution, that it has come to stay. It has a noble career before it. May its mission be to portray, from year to year, the pleasant side of college life; to recall to the minds of the alumni into whose homes it goes, the pleasant days and happy scenes of their own course; to fitly remove at each yearls close the wrinkles and care-worn looks which a years hard work have placed upon the students brow, by reminding him of the jokes, pleasantries and oddities with which the year has teemed, as well as of much that is of more permanent value; to picture a side of college life which no other publication can; and, finally, to honor our Alma Mater, and carry the joyous shout, Hi-O-Hi, O-Hi-O. Hi-l-li. O-Hi Oberlin, into every nook and corner of our land. Our fond readers will not find this first issue of the Hi-O-Hi entirely impersonal. We shall deplore the fact if it ever shall become so. It is its peculiar province to deal familiarly with all, to better acquaint all our 1,700 students with one another, by enabling each to see how his own and his neighbors name look in print, perhaps by presenting to each a mirror in which he may ltsee himseli as ithers see him? We have faithfully endeavored to be entirely impartial in our dealings with you all, and not to favor one more than another, either by more frequent or more conspicuous mention. If a grain of unvarnished truth sticks out here and there, let no one feel offended. Everything is good-natured, nothing malicious. Heartily thanking all who have kindly helped us in our undertaking, and hoping that succeeding classes will improve upon our work, we respectfully dedicate the first Hi-O-Hi to you, kind reader, and bid you plunge in. FILLING A PAGE: A SMATTERING OF THOUGHT: Although few want to work on the yearbook many, perhaps mostt want to be in it. But why? We learn through time and experience that creatures such as yearbooks objectify their subjects. And despite the fact that turning people into objects is not PC. and that we all fear being treated like an object. just about anyone you approach with a camera will not deny you a few shots This is especially true when words like ttyearbook and ttnewspaper come into play. We want to be objectified. We all have a desire to be understood, or at least acknowledged. by others. Appearance in the yearbook, especially in candid shots, confirms our existence and makes us feel that others have noticed and will notice us. It confirms their acceptance of us. or at least their superficial interest. which always seems to be better than nothing. Is it? Yearbooks simplify to an incredible degree that which occurred in less than a years time. Within each Hi-O-Hi. we attempt to produce the essence of a time and place which will serve as a tool for us alli a tool with which we can dig about in our memories for joys. sorrows, boredoms. special moments. and of course. The Oberlin Experience tis this a Clichelh. Within this 240 page book and its partner in crime. a 24 page supplement. we try to nail down reality. Yet can we depict your reality or anyoneis? Bits oftime and place fall away from our interpretation: pictures fail to fit compositions and are cropped by the photo company in ways one would never believe possible: deadlines, time and space constraints, and personal crises all play a part. These uncontrollable aspects of production. in addition to the subjective choices of photographers and layout and copy people. form an odd packaging of reality. But through it allt we arejustified in calling the Hi-O-Hi a concrete version of reality from year to year, a viable tool historically and per- sonally with which we can delve into the past Furthert it serves as a concrete base from which one can try to explain to family tespecially those who are paying for this educationi and friends where we have been and what weive become and why. So be glad you are the proud owner ofa 1988 Hi-O-Hi. that monument to the honor and glory olour great civilization 7 or 7 thanks for partaking in our humble view. our vain attempt to depict a reality which can never be grasped 7 or 7 gee. this thing sure looks nifty on your shelf 7 or 7 thanks for withstanding my drivel. 7 the editor Gallery Daisy Colchie The jurors for this yearts Gallery were Tim Keating, Instructor of Art, and Sam Walker, Assistant Professor of Art.
