I did that a lot, you know. After all it is the college yearbook so why shouldnlt more of you put in your two cents worth. Anyway, we were throwing around ideas for the cover and the end- sheets. I had by this time already decided on the cover, but wanted to hear what the others said. The endsheets tyou know, that area between the cover and title page that has some sort of drawing picture on i0 were an entirely different matter. All the other editor and I could decide on was the color; he wanted graphics; I wanted a picture. So here I was in Das- comb, eating runny eggs, dry toast and thick orange juice, staring out at Mudd and the yearbook office window in Wilder when suddenly inspiration hit. The yearbook has been around for a while t90 years, in factl, this would be the ninetieth volume to be published, exactly ten years ago there had been no HI-O-HI 0971 was the only year a book was not done a they gave the money to a good cause in the town insteadl; why didnlt I bring back a few things that were'really important to previous books. I im- mediately thought of dedications and of some good old school spirit twhich Oberlin seems to be lacking severely these daysl. So how about the college yell and colors. The college yell originated in 1897 when Professor Churchillls entry to the contest held by the Review won. tProfessor Churchill, by the way, was well-loved and respected by the entire college com- munityJ The question now became who can we dedicate this book to? Usually the honor is bestowed upon a professor and I thought of the three, Mr. Frank, Mr. Lanyi, and Mr. Eliash, who had died this year. That somehow wasnlt quite right. Then I thought of the Snack Bar. After all, where else can you find any of your good friends at almost any time of the day, where else is there food a no longer cheap a where else do you see the philosophy de- partment all together tso to speakl in one place? But then I remembered that the Snack Bar is not always what itls cut out to be; better not honor it. So I turned back to animate objects. There must be some professor who was a source of inspiration to us all, who showed us the way, who welll never forget . . . Nope, canlt think of any. How about the dogs in Wilder Bowl? Yes, those yappy, yipping little hur- tling balls of fur who sneak into the snack bar toh, no, not againl and steal your burger or grab your scarf as you walk by and nearly choke you. Better reconsider that one. Who made Oberlin really spe- cial? What made me come back year after year, to suffer the tortures of Mudd and the woes of the yearbook? And I finally realized as I took my tray up to the conveyor belt in Dascomb with my break- fast still on it that what really mattered was you guys. I know that itIs really corny and sappy, but itls true, Every time I wanted to leave I thought of all those faces and grins, all those requests for quarters for coffee and Space Invaders, all those notes you borrowed and never gave back, all the times you woke me from my nap in Mudd, all those Saturdays on Wilder steps, and I decided that no one has made Oberlin more fun than you.
