You think maybe you got Santa Cruzts instead. L 3 X x r r w mm 1W5 A n. wry, c .: From The Editor Yearbooks are supposed to review the year: the faces, the places, the good times, and the crimes. Yearbooks are always expected to capture the essence of a place. Well, Oberlin is a hard place to put your finger on. This year my finger has landed on many characteristics of Oberlin. It has been stuck in Old Barrows tapioca, smashed in the library door, been caught pointing at the wrong person several times, stepped on by some Oberlin faculty and typed almost 129,000 words on a manual typewriter. Now, its stuck in my ear; for one person cannot possibly describe the Oberlin experience. But while the years at Oberlin pass differently for each person, I think that there are a lot of experiences shared by the student body: as a whole, as a passel of small groups, and as an army of promising individuals. The touble with any yearbook is that it cannot cover everything, and cannot always depict events as they really were. But I am not about to concede that this book does not cover everything. If it has not, I will say that we have tried to put together as many aspects of Oberlin life as possible. That means that this book does not necessarily ignore the existence of rainy days, No Entries, veal parmesan, and 3.2 beer, but just because we have not dwelt on them does not mean that we are denying that we must lose as well as win, cry as well as laugh. Usually, we would all rather do the latter in both cases. Therefore this book has got a lot to say about the good things in Oberlin: springtime, academic quality, Wilder Bowl, memorable professors, and the like. These qualities are ones which have existed at Oberlin for years, and we have tried to show a bit of that, too. For as Oberlin again faces another decade, we know that there are certain things here which we will all be able to remember and hold on to. 80 hold on, folks. A Q, ywmgki e Q't- Practicing the martial arts becomes more than a sequence of drills and movements. It becomes a way of life. The martial arts are a state of mind rather than merely a'physical challenge or an endurance contest. The participant is not only facing an opponent, but faces him or herself. The reward of the experience is the strengthening of self-reliance, and the satisfaction that comes from achieving a peace of mind and a wholeness of body, mind, and spirit. Each martial art has its own blend of movements, styles, and philosophy. Each punch, kick, stance, and block is broken down into the simplest possible movements and learned, so that the sequence and How is understood. You begin With the basics. You build on the basics Within yourself. You are the artist, and the art. In pouring rain that night, 250 poncho-clad women gath- ered for the Take Back The Night rally and march Stomping through puddles in the darkest sections of Oberlin, women demanded the right to walk at night free of harrassment and fear. Fight back in large numbersii was the theme of the march. The weekend of nineteen workshops addressed a wide variety of topics ranging from: mother-daughter relationships to women and the draft? the politics of womenis health to men and their role in feminismf The keynote Speech, Dealing With Divisions Among Women , was given by Wilmette Broer former Black Panther and current Inter- national Spokeswoman for the Wages for Housework Cam- paign. She spoke realistically of the differences between black and white feminism in a way that electrified the audience. The conference ended with a panel discussion on Where Do We Go From Here? where women discussed where to take the WomenTs Movement in the 805, both inside and outside of Oberlin College. An hour after the last student is handed his or her diploma, Oberlin, Ohio is transformed from a hectic, coffee-drenched, academic labryrinth to a charming, placid, harmless little mosquito-filled village. You can strip yourself of collegiate attire and treat yourself to full personhood - no more book laden knapsacks, no more trips to the Coop Bookstore to stock up on liquid paper. The Snack Bar is locked up tight. The disco is silent. Mudd is an emptied remnant of horrendously long, draining days. For three months you are a member of the community at large. At the Apollo you wait alongside third graders to see The Other Side of the Mountainii, which has been held over for an additional week. The cashier at Ben Franklin who grimaced at you from early September 'til late May begins to smile - she might even get to know your name. Life is calm and leisurely. The heavy, hot, sticky air forces you to slow down, to absorb your surroundings to smash the persistant blood-sucking insects. Summer in Oberlin is the perfect way to discover a small slice of America, yourself, your untouched library, and your strength in solitude. vv w M4Q A imw x w u a .y' y.- umnu. 94 - M 1,01: w; - memm Q-1i - NW 6U If you spent some time watching the Oberlin Rez'ieu' being written, edited, pasted, and printed, you would t find that few things have changed in the last ten years.
