In 1974 Oberlin completed the third library in its history. Before the Seeley G. Mudd Learning Center, it built the Spear Library in 1885, and the Carnegie Li- brary in 1908. Seeley Greenlead Mudd, a physician, philanthropist, and friend to higher education estab- lished the Seeley G. Mudd Fund. The assets of this fund, some forty million dollars, are to be used in the construction of build- ings on leading American col- lege and university campuses. Even during his lifetime Muddts generosity was notable. He gave over ten million dollars to in- stitutions of higher learning be- fore his death in 1968. Oberlin's learning center, a structure with a floor space of some 200,000 square feet, was designed by Warner, Burns, Toan and Lunde, Architects, of New York. 11 wwmwm NMM wwwxx w Wwwmw $WW; M s qu 12 $?x53rtkto :2 ix $2.: a .kaxwgmfagig . The Board of Trustees meets and approves an additionai enrollment of 50 students in the 1975-1976 year to ease a budget deficit. We have eight wheels and two small kilns, and another big one out on the athletic field. Lots of people belong to our co-op, too, and anyone can get involved. You don't know how great it feels to bury your hands in soft, mucky clay until you've tried it, and then to turn it into something attractive and substantial! Throwing pots is therapeutic; when We had enough studying for one day, I go down and throw a pitcher or a bowl, or maybe I hand-build. On days when we have a wood-kiln firing, people bring food and we have a feast. Winter Term was great for pottery because there was enough time to do it intensively and really develop the skill. N. Scott Momaday, native American poet, speaks at Finney Chapel. Dean Richard Dahl reports that 825 of the 1272 dorm rooms will have private phones by fall of 1975. i The government majors' committee disbands. the action stemming from con- troversy between faculty and majors. Dick Gregory tsponsored by Abusua, Afro House. and AACSDPi speaks in Finney at an evening assembly. He claims a CIA conspiracy in the assasina- tions of the 1960's, Watergate. and the Patricia Hearst kidnapping. International Women's Day. WOBC broadcasts an entire evening of women's! music and programs, and conferences and workshops are held in Wilder Hall. Students protest California farmworkers' mistreatment by participating in the UFW fasts. Oberlin Music Theater presents Figaro at Halt Auditorium, directed by David Bamberger and conducted by Robert Baustian. Jay Weiner, a former Oberlin student, is called to testify before a Pennsylvania grand jury on the whereabouts of kidnapped fugitive Patricia Hearst. Jack Scott, the former Oberlin athletic director is sought in connection with the Hearst incident; her fingerprints were found in a Pennsylvania farmhouse which was rented by Micki McGee Scott. The Review reports that the Physical Education department submitted its budget for 1975-1976 without appropriating funds for football. The major reason for the action is that the College said that the intercollegiate athletic budget must be cut by $15,000. The Oberlin Review announces that the new $3,000,000 art addition will house a modern art gallery, named in honor of Ellen Johnson, art professor. The men's volleyball season ends with a record of 11-3. The Review reports the trustee meeting at which Carlson's budget was approved, an increase in room and board was voted, and the availability of a restricted gift of $20,000 to continue football was announced. Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown conduct the Baldwin seminar, Arch- itects on Architecture. In his closing lecture, llPlain and Fancy Architecture at Oberlin, Venturidiscusses Gilbert's romanesque work and the new art addi- tion. Danenberg will decide on a proposal for co-ed quads in South Hall. The Student Senate challenges the thirty-hour limit. This limit necessitates payment for any credit hours over 30 per year, making it impossible for students to graduate in three and a half years without extra cost. Pete Seeger gives his concert at Finney Chapel. The college postpones the 30-hour limit, citing lack of warning to the students who had planned with the 32-hour limit in mind. The Black Arts Workshop presents Charles Gordon's No Place to be Some- body at the Little Theatre.
