11 DAWN OF A NEW LIGHT HThomas Alva Edison, horn in 1847 at Milan, Ohio. is the subject of this mural, unveiled in the State Capitol at Columbus on May 16, 1950. The painting is by Howard Chandler Christy. another native of Ohio. The mural is the gift of the following elec- tric power companies: Ohio power Company. Cleveland Illuminating Company, Ohio Edison Company. Ohio public Service Company, Cen- tral Ohio Light and power Company, Dayton Light and power Company, Toledo Edison Company. Columbus and Southern Ohio Electric Company. and Cincinnati Gas and Electric Com- pany. The focal center of the mural is a life-size portrait of Mr. Edison in later life. He is seated at his desk which is filled with letters, papers and notes. just as it was when opened 100 years after the day of his birth. At the extreme left is the small brick house in which Edison was born. Be- low, he is pictured in his youth selling newspapers on a train, a job which gave him a start in life. On the right and to the rear of the main central figure the inventor is shown in middle life working in his laboratory on elec- tric light inventions. Beside the desk is the Ediphone, and the phonograph on which was made the first sound record. The life-size marble figure of the bSpirit of Light: given to Mr. Edison by one of the French Govern- ments. is shown in the upper left sec- tion of the mural. The figure is a winged nude holding aloft an electric bulb, from which the light streams out through darkness and across the sky to meet the rays of the rising sun: from 0117.0: Emfn're within an Emfn're published by the Ohio Develop- ment and Publicity Commission
