Oberlin Perspective: Study lt is scarcely enlightening to hear that there is a real student concern over and varied attitudes toward the role of extracurricular activities on the college campus, ranging from the feeling of the BMOC that they are necessary and obligatory to the scholarly purist's rejection of them as extraneous, Yet, and naturally enough, at Oberlin there is no analogous basic questioning of the value of study. Some striation exists on the seconda ry question of how much to study, but it is not Shall l study? but the complementary Shall l participate in extracurricular activities? which is debated. The very name The Associated Students of Oberlin College indicates our role most definitively. Motives for desiring an education in- volve a number of factors, ranging from the passive acceptance of a role through the mere yearning for knowledge to the ulterior lin ivory tower cantl de- sire for economic gain, but the drive to acquire an education is omnipresent and sometimes startlingly strong. Extracurricular activities may give their yearly quota of escape, accomplish or not their yearly goals, and take their yearly toll of study time, but education is never forgotten. -Jim Owens But who's got time to lounge?
