Where there's a gown there will always be a town. This is so because any congregation of consumers, whether they be intellectuals, coal miners, or business executives, will inevitably attract busy little business men who will seek to separate these consumers from their monies, Out of this basic economic process will develop a business district and then a town. The intel- ligent town engages in this separation process while speaking only well of those from whom it gets its rea- son to be. Only the fool criticizes his customers. Eventually as other social forces come into play the gown consumers mingle with the town consumers and the lines cross back and forth until it becomes impos- sible to say where the gown ends and the town begins. Finally, then, there are no towners and no gowners, only people of a community. Thus, the so-called Ober- lin town-gown conflict is no conflict at all but only a figment of the imagination. For without the gown the town would be non-existent, and would in fact be pretty much like Pittsfield junction on route 58 some three miles south of the city. -Bill Long, Manager, Oberlin Co-Op ls it worth 5398?
