Disinterest: Disfranchisernent- Student Lot in Campus Politics By Marlowe Anderson Fellow students, 'tis at thee, sweet abodes to apathy-at thee, and for thy benefit the political organizations kneel on hard floors to paint start- ling banners, and search for clever ways to draw you out to political meetings. Because we don't want the world to be too great a shock to you when M More than apathy blanketed the campus in 1950-51. The Thanksgiving blizzard was only part of snowy winter. you graduate, we try to bring some of its problems to you now. But you must tell us about your blue- books, your papers, your assignments. And you marvel I don't see how you find time for . . . In the end, we who want to talk over the state of the nation and the world with you must talk to our- selves. And we talk about the state of the student's mind, too-when does he become a citizen, even a citizen of the college? Until you wake up to respon- sibility - thy fate, mediocrity, thy place, ob- scurity. By Robert Hanson Because of a critical world situation that neces- sitated reinstating Selective Service, the Faculty voted 105-31 for ROTC. The issue this year was much less debated than in 1949, though many stu- dent leaders felt that the final vote on ROTC was taken before students had a fair chance to express themselves on the subject. Best of all, it is a place Where something approximating individuality i r Here in the Allen Art Building can be found art treasures to fit any taste, irom medieval artists through Picasso. is possible. At least to me it seems that both Rah- rah-er and Avant Garder can live in uneasy har- mony, and follow their own peculiar stars. No one, at any rate, is forced into the pattern of good old Phi Kappa Nu, nor necessarily into the mores of a little Group of Serious Thinkers. I don't doubt that a three-eyed Albanian wizard could iind his place in the sun. I Well, if you consider Tappan Square mentioned, a snide remark made about the Arb, and solitary confinement in the stacks properly deplored-this, in 150 Words, is Oberlin. 17
