Lumps, Bumps Worth Trouble. Says Athlete in Retrospect By Peter Loveland Somehow dorm acquaintanceships and Snack Bar conversations just don't measure up to locker- room comradeship and the teamwork of inter-col- legiate competition. Those of us who have taken part in Oberlin sports are'proud of our sturdy Oberlin tradition, which keeps our athletics a game and not a business. Looking back on four years of sports participation and steady spectator interest, I feel more assuredly that the time devoted to ath- letics has more than its share of treasured college memories. It was worth the early return to school and the long practices. Even the hours being taped on the trainer's bench, or the painful, limping treks to the hospital to have a split nose clipped together or a charleyhorse treated are remembered with a smile. At the same time, memories flash back of slap- stick train trips to Colorado or New York. And all hail the exploits of the low-flying Green Spleen. Even in leisure the 14 Then there are the nights before the contest, when the race is planned and sweated-out in your dreams. Again and again your mind reviews the plays, wonders what shape the field will be in, whether for the first time the pre-game training meal will feature something for dessert besides fruit cocktail. No bluebook A or clever seminar report ever gave most of us the thrill comparable to the sincere stu- dent cry of Good race, fella. Oberlin sports worth it? You bet! Split noses and fruit cocktail may be background to athletics, but they are secondary to the split-seconds of action. Four years of concentrated work in the Conservatory lead to the development of specialties, as these hands reveal. Con student will be tapping or humming the No. 1 Symphony of his classical Hit Parade. Music is the bulk of his diet, with a few scattered college subjects thrown in. Perhaps the biggest criticism of concentrated ap- plication to our art rests in the enjoyment sacrificed for technical surveyal and acquisition of pertinent data, we learn to listen, but sometimes forget to relax.
