1-. .- Freshmen studying in Men's Building can rest their eyes on the Spanish Gothic architecture of Finney Chapel. Varied Atmosphere Has Social. Intellectual Climates For All By Stephen Gendzier From highly successful high school shells we all emerged, seeking life in a liberal arts college. Seek- ing is too strong a word. We were pushed from our provincial settings where all our actions were meek compared to the new life of tension and in- security. Immediately we victims of the academic life assumed exclusive poses. In attempting to find a schedule we chose the group that was best suited to our ulterior motives. The soul-searchers of the Mermaid Tavern variety found their answer with the aid of knowing professors and the letting of emotions while seeking, joe-athlete had his girl, the big game, and the Saturday dance, the Presti crowd jostled around, tossed off a few witty tidbits and gave each other confidence by friendly pokes and knowing eyes, others had their television set, hello-friendships, bridge games, labor songs, and other forms of amusement best in accord with the individual's tradition. Some managed to develop critical eyes that remained the one constant in their otherwise fluid existence. But most of us discussed for four years how much money to spend on for- mals, whether the Lord is one or three, and whether labor was getting an even break. One test of the effectiveness of liberal arts programs is the social leadership it provides. When our society passes Mc- Carren Acts and ROTC college programs in the name of the academic tradition and democracy, it is time either for a revolt, a migration, or a trip to the psychiatrist. Housemother Believes Students Unsophisticated - Too Serious By Mrs. Maude Warner In his processing, the Oberlin student experiences many painful changes in his thinking, but he would not be a typical student if he remained unchal- lenged and unmoving. There always seem to be Strangers in Oberlin have one distinct memory of their visit. Never have I seen so many bicycles on a college campus. crusaders and causes on the campus. At present the subject is Open House Open Door versus Closed House Closed Door, or something like that. The campus is busy with students who must rush-from one important meeting to another. Bike brigades fly between the libe and Peters, dorms and Snack Bar, Conservatory and launderateria. Citizens shudder at the whizzing wheels so close, but take danger in their stride. Oberlin students are not sophisticated. Neither are they hill-billiesf' Their lives seem to run on the theory Let me alone to manage myself. If I donlt get enough sleep, eventually Illl suffer and then I'll do something about itf' Students are casual in dress, manners, and speech, but sometimes we wonder if casual and careless are synonyms, in- formal and well-mannered antonyms. Students, however, can measure up when the situation de- mands it. Academic work is taken seriously. Students work and worry. Grades are too important. They may not have time left to learn to think, evaluate, or develop themselves into more versatile person- alities. 11
