Well Adjusted Prof. Confronts Classes With Equanimity. Cloud By Frank Ebersole Though I have become wonderfully accommo- dated to Oberlin, I still remember that, before my adjustment was complete, these things impressed me: I discovered that the things at Gibson's really do taste just like they look. Oberlin students are never interested in whether a statement is true 5 they are only interested in what faculty member said it. The faculty is subdivided into departments, the departments into ranks. Within any rank within one department an ordering is arrived at by Professor Ebersole often speaks at Arch 7. where students and faculty alike can discuss controversial issues freely. due democratic process and numbers are assigned. After I had been in Oberlin a few months, I used to dream every night of a push-me-pull-you climb- ing a mountain. He would frighten me by trans- forming into pairs of faculty members. These are some of the difficult-to-verbalize atti- tudes: When conversing With' colleagues I will not talk about his subject or mine, football and base- ball are good in season. I will be proud of the high intelligence of my students-and treat them like morons. A student who calls my attention to a slip is un-Oberlin. If I should almost make a mistake, then my glasses are dirty and my notes were hard to see. I will not so much teach my subject as to teach how fine, how beautiful, how important my 8 subject is. Lectures and Uresearchn are the thing. Although as an Oberlin faculty member I have few moral decisions of moment to make, I will always act as if I could confront any situation with equa- nimity and perfect rationality. I will always have the answer. I will never recommend any change in the Oberlin method of education. I will remember that when you turn an endowed college upside down, the money falls out. I knew that I was well adjusted when I started to notice that I was preceded into the lecture room by a pillar of cloud. Student Finds New Experiences Offer Broadening Influence By Miriam Wunderly One of the most valuable aspects of Oberlin has been the opportunity to get outside my cultural framework, to regard life from another's point of view, and to try to correlate this with material in the books. It has been more than the novelty broadening of Oberlin which is valuable-that is, the finding of new aspects and then being pleased with what we've found. It is more than just meet- ing students from China, India, or Germany, or 77 David Mallet, son of seniors Iohn and Odette Mallet, has been thoroughly steeped in the Oberlin tradition. being acquainted with Negroes. It is the realiza- tion that these contacts offer a way of gaining maturity.
