A HIS is the story of Ober- lin College in 1947-48. 3, , - Though responsibility for the W 1' recording of it is ours, the 1 year belongs to you. Conse- quently we have attempted to 6 prepare a factual account of E' some few of the highlights of the year. . Because we feel that Oberlin is many things to many people, we chose not to build our book around an ar- tistic or faintly philosophical theme. WVe leave you to your own interpretation with the hope that our Words and pictures will help you to formulate it and keep it in mind. In the beginning we decided to continue the trend begun with the 1947 I-II-O-HI, to try to publish a The system of cduccttvjmz in this I'fLSt'IiUf't072, will pro- vide for the body and heart as well as the vjntcllvctg for it aims at thc best cd-ucaiion. of the whole mem. -JOHN JAY Smri-innn, 18 33 book that could be read and appreciated from the open- ing pages to the end. Consistent with this idea, several modifications were made. More pictures of an informal nature were planned for all sections of the book. In the House section we eliminated the customary pic- tures of each residential group. Instead, pictures in this section illustrate dormitory experiences. Conscious of the potential value of HI-O-HI's in years ahead, we felt this treatment would be more meaningful. More important, however, is our belief that emphasis placed on what we did contributes more to the record of the year than might a collection of more formal group pictures. This book represents the combined efforts of more than 75 students. In addition, many others have aided our work through their cooperation and understanding. A partial list of those to whom we are indebted appears at the end of the book. 7

W DEDICATED T TO PRESIDENT AND MRS. WILLIAM STEVENSGN E'VE been indebted to President and Mrs. Stevenson ever since the time when, as underlings on the '47 Hi-O-Hi, we found it imperative to find transportation to an inaccessible printer, and called President Stev- enson for help on borrowing a college car. The college had no available car, he said, but ivouldn't we like to use his? That incident, while not the only reason we dedicate this Hi-O-Hi to President and Mrs. Stevenson, is indicative of the friendliness and co-operation which all Oberlin has found so typical of them. No Oberlin student, no matter how misanthropically he pulls the book-covers over his head, can miss their ready hospitality or ignore their com- plete and genuine inte1'est. If the Hrst two years are the hardest, the Stevensons need worry no more. They've under- lined for usithe liberal in liberal arts college , for their interests reach throughout and beyond the campus and their activities toward the cause of racial and religious tolerance. These are indications only of the many reasons why we are proud to know and have them. mwmrs 6
