Carl Wrflllm Thomas Graham Frank Shaw DEAN WITTKE Four years ago Dean Wi't'tke came to us from Ohio State in the official capacity of dean of the college and professor of history. Possessed of an amazing store of energy and ability along many lines, he has been a vitalizing influence on campus. His literary accomplishments are multifold, his latest being We IV ho Built Amer- ica, published two years ago. He is also an outstanding lecturer. This year his address on the evolution of democracy launched the popular series of Thursday night lectures. His pet hobby is music, and he plays the violin in the conservatory orchestra. DEAN GRAHAM Dean Graham, a Canadian by birth, went to the University of Toronto, after which he was ordained as a Presbyterian minister. He has always been active in the YMCA, for a year during the war he was army secretary, and was later made a member of the General Board. He has just returned to Oberlin from a sabbatical leave which he spent in 'traveling to Japan, Singapore, Ceylon, Africa, and South America. DIRECTOR SHAW Dr. Shaw did his undergraduate work in the Oberlin Conservatory, studied in other places, including Paris, and finally returned to Oberlin as Dean of the Conservatory. He has spent most of his time teaching and solving Conservatory problems since he has been here. In 1929 he was elected President of Pi Kappa Lambda. Music is, of course, of utmost importance in his life, but it does not dominate his interests completely, he is extremely proud of his fine collection of pipes, enjoys boxing matches, and is known as the best dressed man on campus. i I 5

Ernest Hatch Wilkins Realizing that Oberlin should teach its students to accept the social respon- sibility of good citizenship, President Wilkins this year sponsored a series of ten lectures on Democracy, Communism, and Fascism. He has also encouraged the growth of such organizations as the Peace and Public Aifairs Forum. Thus we respect our president as a scholar who does not think the problems of a material world beneath his consideration, but rather feels that the keen ana- lytical approach of the scholar is necessary if the problems of the world are to be permanently solved. More than as a scholar, however, we respect our presi- dent as a man who will listen to our troubles, help us with our problems, and enjoy the familiar greeting, Prexy . Pre S

Evlwnrzl Boswortl Illargueritc Woodwor Illnry Van llletre DEAN BUSWUHTH Dean Bosworth's career speaks for his diversified abilities: he grad- uated from the Oberlin school of Theology, acted as pastor of two churches, was Physical Director of the Detroit YMCA, was con- nected with the Grain Exchange in Minneapolis, and became Dean of college men in 1927. He is an ardent sports enthusiast and enjoys ofliciating at track meets and intramural activities. Always con- cerned with civic affairs, he was a former President of the Oberlin Exchange Club. DEAN WUUDWUHTH Miss Woodwor'th holds the oldest dean of women's position in the country, since Oberlin pioneered in admitting Women. She has had a wide range of experience, having studied at Syracuse University, Where she was Associate Dea11 of Women, the Sorbonne, and St. l'lugh's at Oxford. This year she has distinguished herself by deliv- ering addresses at Pembroke College and at the Atlantic City meeting of the National Association of Deans of Women, as Well as by direct- ing a special reading course on Russian and French Novelists of the 19th century. DEAN VAN IVIETHE lllrs. Van Metre had experience in the administration of a children's hospital a11d in editing a magazine in Los Angeles, so it is small wonder that she has been able to fulfill her duties so capably. She acts as advisor to Conservatory Women and assigns room and board jobs for all women 011 campus. Loved for her deep understanding of people and sense of humor, she is respected for her good judgment, fairness, and efficiency.
