fX BERLIN, which was born and has survived because of the college, now regards it i11 a rather detached manner, showing mild interest, if not extreme enthusiasm. To understand this attitude, one must trace the history of the village and its inhabitants. Founded in 1833 as a religious colony, it was hoped that Oberlin would be the leader in Christianizing the west. A college was started to train young men to become ministers and pious school teachers , and in 1837 women were admitted. The college and town were bound together for many years by common religious aims, but with the passage of a century tl1e religious ideals of the college have become more purely academic, a11d the village has become a haven for retired ministers, missionaries, and alumni. Even if the country undergoes a great metamorphosis in the next century, it is reasonably safe to predict that Oberlin will remain tl1e unperturbed, unhurried, philosophical little village that she is.

There is a town NE hour by Greyhound from the 'theatres and department stores of Cleveland and Within bik- ing distance of the bathing beaches of Lake Erie is the sedate little village of Oberlin. In plan it is typically middle-western: a square park is the center of a rec- tangular system of streets and is bounded on one side by a business district of low, Hat buildings. Oberlin is not like other Ohio villages, however, for it is the site of a college, without which it would not exist.

The Theological Seminary, and the Conservatory are neatly housed, each with its own building. The college, however, scatters itself over the town of Oberlin, in buildings which vary widely in beauty, and even more widely in architectural style.
