And while the women had a ship party at the Men's Gym, frosh men ate and ate and fought with pillows at Chance Creek. They had a mixer, too--one of those shirt sleeves and suspenders affairs-where the greenies learned to start, You're a senior, aren't you? not Are you a freshman, too? i 5 K

John Erskine, poet, novelist, scholar, musician, and teacher, accepted the invitation of the Class of i936 to be their Commencement speaker, H. M. Robinson, author, describes him as being a huge mast of a man with a bright rudder of a nose, a hu- morous slanting mouth, a sabre wit. His lectures on literature are an event to the students of Columbia who often Cut classes to attend them. On May l5, l936, Oberlin College re- ceived news that Dean Mildred Mc- Afee of Oberlin was to become Presi- dent McAfee of Wellesley. She had come to Oberlin in l934 as one of the youngest deans of women in the his- tory of the college. ln regard to leav- ing Dean McAfee declared herself proud to be admitted to the class of i936 and the Alumni of Oberlin College. One of the famed Dorsey Brothers, Tommy, found that he could not keep his date with the Oberlin Seniors for their Prom this past June, the Prom Committee found something better, so the seniors seemed to feel, in the one-man show --Duke Ellington. lt was, in the words of a freshman who remained to hear him, hot stuff!

Then the sophs returned-the week of bliss was over. A bonfire frosh l to start the year off right. Tip Your cap frosh, and bonnets, 4O bedecked, for the gids. Shoes to Shine, beds to make on Sundays, The Generals teeth to brush. And most fun of all the trip to Chance Creek for Third West Section of the M. B. with Oberlin Yellow Cab to the rescue. Official soph frosh hostilities were opened Saturday, October 3, when The two under-classes met on each side of a SIX-foot pushball and proceeded to the place Of the tie-up and the greased-flag-pole Climb. The sophs won this contest by, as the N! Ffa Review said, a bit of well-executed strate- gy. It was agreed that this battle seemed more fair than the greased-pole flag rush, when the team on the defense had the ad- vantage. h
