The higher incidence of suicide, crime, and drug use are all signs of alienation and disconnection. The college has many reasons to take justifiable pride in the strength of its faculty, the richness and diversity of its instructional facilities, and its ability to attract an increasing number of students of superior aca- demic potential. The fact that since 1965, approximately 100 Oakwood College graduates have earned doctoral degrees in medicine and dentistry speaks well for the viability of the academic program. However, there is room for improvement and there is much that can be done to create a greater enthusiasm for learning and an atmosphere in which youthful genius can flourish. Recognizing its responsiblity to offer a balanced educa- tional program for all of its students, the College seeks to foster ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE without ELITISM and to maintain an EGALITARIAN MILIEU for learning without sanctioning MEDIOCRITY. RUCK EOR EOURTEEN YEARS OF LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE 'lhe Southem Union Conference called Dr. Rock in 1968 to Decatur, Georgia tojoin them as associate secretary in the A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Dr. Calvin B. Rock, immediate past president of Oakwood College is a native of New York City where he began his l , ear y education. His elementary training was completed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He obtained his high school education at PineForeandLosAngl A d ' ' ' g e es ca emres lSeventhday Adventist rnstrtuhonsl, graduating from the latter rn 1948. He entered Oakwood College in January 1948. ln 1952 he was called to minister in the South Atlantic Conference with Columbia, South Carolina and Augusta, Georgia being his first charges. ln 1953 he married the former Clara Elizabeth Peterson, daughter of F. L. Peterson, who was president of Oakwood during that time. In 1954 he eamed the Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion from Oakwood Followin raduati D R k h . g g on r. oc continued to work in the South Atlantic Conference as pastor! evangelist in the Florida District. There he established an outstanding record as a successful preacher and pastor and constructed two major churches in Orlando and Miami. ln 1963 Dr. Rock was called to the Lake Region Conference where he became pastor of the City Temple SDA Church in Detroit, Michigan. There he led in the construction of the F. L. Peterson Academy and earned the Master of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Detroit. Ministerial Association. From there he was called to the Northern Conference in 1970 to pastor the Ephesus Church in New York City fHarlemJ. A summer graduate program in education and religion was inaugurated on Oakwood's campus by Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Buildings constructed include: Eva B. Dyk es Library, Carter Hall addrtron, W. R. Beach Natatonum, J. T. Stafford Academy, C E. Moseley Religion Complex Harris Pine Mill Furniture Factory, the landscaping and greenhouse facility, a science complex, and a skating rink and recreation center which is scheduled to open in November. Cleveland ojfcially retired. This marked a transition in, hat not the end of his service to Oakwood College. As an instractor for the Religion and Theology Department Elder Cleveland hrozight a aniaae approach to the religion class. His stndents were jed a spiritnal hanqnet that jkatnred the Bread ofLzj? and fresh Living Water. On special days the Oil of gladness was known to flow freely. The spiritaally anemic were innocnlated with large doses of hope and given the recommended daily allowance of 'yon can make it . Anyone who was willing coald taste and see that the Lord is good. Elder Cleveland's ministry has tonched nameroas lives, and realizing that he will he missed, he will continae to teach at least one class while writing his memoirs. Scholar, anthor, storyteller, and preacher, The Elder has a practical down-to-earth approach to life that makes his coansel mach in demand. Many a yonng man whose head was in the sky has heen reminded that he that regardeth the cloads shall not reap. I-Ie is a man who has done his reaping and stadents know that his wife, Celia, is dear to his heart. Everything mast change , and many changes there have heen at Oakwood this year. Still we're thankful for the devotion and service Elder Cleveland has shown. Most of all, we're glad that we don't have to start missing him jast yet. THE UN CF MURAL The UNCF CUnited Negro College Fundl mural, with the exception of last year has been painted by Mr. Elfred Lee, the Art Director, and the stu dents in his Art classes. One of the first processes is drawing the design on the mural, as seen hanging in Noran Hall, and then the design is projected onto it iz KING RELAY Eighteen years have passed since the Civil Rights Movement was watered with the blood of its native son, Martin Luther King,jr. His memory lives on, in some ways larger than the man in life. After a struggle, monumental in itself, concerned Americans finally reaped the sweet fruit of victory as, on january 20th, 1986, the nation honored one of its greatest men. On that day, we celebrated the birthday of the King . Hes has brought together a conglomeration of the latest studio equipment on which students learn to cue records, read manuscripts, and put into actual practice the theory they have learned in class. WOAK is used as part of the Communications Practium. Communications students are able to get hand on experience in designing and implementing radio broadcast, although WOAK's effective broadcasting power only reaches a listening audience within the confines of the building in which it is housedjean, a French speaking student from Cameroon, is mastering the art of communicating, and in English. Chalet has been secretly serving some of the finest cuisine in the Huntsville area. I'm here to investigate the matter. Upon arriving at the O.C. Chalet I'm amazed at the long winding lineup of well over 200 people, dying to get in . After waiting for what seemed like eternity, I finally graduated to the front of the line. Upon arriving there however, I was shocked to discover that I could of received a free meal if I'd only had the catd . I tried using Mastercard and Visa, but both were unacceptable. Instead I was charged 33.50. I quickly paid the cashier thinking she must have made a gross error in price. 33.50 for a meal!! What a bargain, you can't lose-or can you? Strange though, I'm forced to pay even though I've not received my meal or even been ushered to my seat. Once inside I was instantly impressed by the cutlery and china selection. They used only the finest no-name brand silverware and took time to wrap each individual peice. The chi- na is also of elegant quality, one doesn't see such eminent products in your ordinary restaurant. As I surveyed the Chalet, it suddenly occurred to me that the hostesses and waiters must be on a kaffree break , as both were absent in the Chalet. Everyone seemed to be getting along well without them however. I first browsed by the all you can eat salad bat. Wow! what a selection!! There was lettuce and tomatoes, and more lettuce and tomatoes. I wouldn't know what I'd choose. Prob- ably lettuce and tomatoes!! Once inside of the Chalet, one side seemed more lively than the other, I decided to proceed over to that side and find out what it was that evoked such excitement in them. Ah there's a gentleman that seems to be enjoying the meal. Excuse me sir What's up man, what's up Pardon me I said what's up! Oh hello, ah, ah can you tell me what it is that makes the O.C. Chalet so popular in this vicinity. I say it's de stiff competition. What do you mean sir by the stiff competition Dats jus it, der ain't any competition, you either eat here or hike six miles to McDonald's or eat with Herb at Burger King just across the street. Thank you sir. Ah there's a young couple that seems to be having a splashing good time. Excuse me, why is it that you're gumming your food sir? Well, she lost her dentures in the glutten here last night so she's borrowing mine. Well you see it's like playing dice, you rarely roll the same number twice. I have six types of meals. I just roll my dice and the number that appears is the meal we serve. Though it kept him on the move, and he missed being home, still, he took satisfaction in his reputation as the shrewdest merchant in jerusalem. Today was to be the climax of his journey to Phonecia. By camel he had traveled over the dusty caravan trails. Now Sidon was in view. The sights and sounds of the seaport wafted across his senses like a gentle breeze. Leaving Instructions for his servants to unload the fragrant treasures of spice, perfume, and the beautiful fabrics of colorful hue, he made his way on foot to the center of the mar- ket place. Inside the folds of his robe he felt the weight of a small bag. The many thieves and pickpockets of the city would be delighted to steal this bag, and occasionally his hand deftly touched where it lay to ensure its presence. There, nestled close to his heart, he carried a gleaming wedge of yellow gold. It was the gold of Ophir. Perhaps this would be the day. On every journey his keen eye had carefully sought to find it, but always in vain. Could it be that what he was seeking would never be found? As he passed, familiar faces called out greetings, advertising the virtue of their wares, silks from India, carved ivory from Africa, he lingered only briefly, perfunctorily exchanged the customary salutations. His heart was elsewhere, his mind on the unsatiated quest. Aah, this was the section. Turquoise, rubies, emeralds and sapphires, these were the precious stones. His eyes narrowed, and his face became impressive, showing no emotion. He leisurely took in the scene. No, it was not here. He turned to go. There were silks and spices, wares of his own to be sold. But wait, that last booth in the corner of the market, he hadn't stopped there. No, nothing special here, gold earrings, tapestries, perfume, and a potpourri of everything but what he sought. Hmm, that box half-tucked away from sight, what could be in there he wondered? The seller moved slowly in the direction of his pointing finger. As their eyes met he felt his heart begin to race strangely. There was something in this box. He could almost sense the value, as when judging between cheap and costly spiknard on the buying trips that took him far. Both men wore expressionless faces, yet, as the seller handed him the box, a shadow, as when a cloud moves between the sun, passed briefly over his face. The contents of this box held special meaning for this seller. As calmly as he could he opened the box, but an involuntary gasp escaped his unguarded lips. Recovering composure too late, he looked up to catch the seller reading the desire in his eyes. How much, . . . wh . . .what are you asking? He reached into his robe and took out the soft leather bag. Take this, it is all I have. I will come again tomorrow. Please don't let anyone buy it before then. He ran. All through the endless afternoon, until long after sun set, he sold his treasures, spice from the Orient, the beautiful deep purple cloth from Tyre, spiknard, the costly per- fume of royalty. By the evening of the next day all was gone. Even the camels had been sold. As the last rays of sunlight painted the sky his tired footsteps wound their way back down the pathway of yesterday. I have the other money Do you still have it? Is it still here? The seller smiled. From beneath a counter he retrieved the box. Yes, I saved it for you. His hands trembled. The excitement showed on his face, but it didn't mater now. He opened the box. Fairer than the moon rising in full glory, it sat enthroned on a cloth of rich royal blue. It was larger than any he had ever seen, yet flawless in symmetry, with a rare and exquisite color. One last fleeting ray of sun fell upon it, polarizing into pools of light. Here was the embodiment of all beauty and truth. At last his quest for perfection had ended. He had found the pearl of great price! There are many things to be found at Oakwood. For some it is a BROADENED social life. For others a chance to excell academically. Whatever one may be seeking, nothing is of more value, or more to be treasured, than a relationship with The One altogether lovely .
