I V , I Signifying the philosophy of education at Oakwood College are the words found in the book EDUCATION, . . . true education means more that the pursual of a certain course of study. It means more than the prep- aration for the life that now is. It has to do with the whole being . . . It is the harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers. It prepares the student for the joy of service in this world, and for the higher joy of wider service in the world to come. To achieve the objective of reflecting the long-lost image of Divinity, the student must receive a training that places the proper em- phasis on strength of character, nobility of ambition, keenness of perception, sound judgement and duty to God and man. Our philosophy is to challenge and to moti- vate every student accepted to prepare himself for service to humanity and to his God. As the student comes to understand the true purpose of education, he also gains a keener insight into his own nature and destiny, and, is there- fore more capable of responding to the rhetor- ic questions - Who, What, Where, and When? or as Shakespeare put it, What is this Quintessence of dust? The students pursue majors in biology, business administration, business education, chemistry, elementary education, English, food and nutrition, history, home economics, mathematics, medical technology, music, nursing fAssociate in Science degreej, psychol- ogy, religion, social work, and sociology. After thorough preparation many pursue advanced study elsewhere, and they participate in secu- lar, professional and religious activities in var- ious parts of the United States as well as in foreign lands.
