A student is many things. I-Ie! she is personality, potentiality and persuasive- ness, Hefshe is laughter, loquacity and liberality, He! she is articulate, ambitious and adventuresome, He! she is deter- mined, devoted and durable, He! she is intellectual, industrious and intuitive, He! she is spiritual, sagacious and schol- arly, and if he or she has been a part of the Oakwood experience during the 1979-80 school year, He! she is also fa- vored, fortunate and famous. Of course, most of the descriptions above might well apply to the Cakwoo- dite of any year or era, but there are special reasons why the student of this current school year can lay claim to fa- vor, fortune and fame: Favor - because God has blessed the efforts of all 1,291 who started the school year in September, 1979 with material and spiritual vitality sufficient for suc- cess in a rigorous academic program. Fortune - because your sojourn here is at a time when Oakwood is enjoying its finest hour of spiritual, material and academic achievements. Of course, we stand upon the shoulders of giants who have built before us, and we must never forget that we are indebted to them and to our loyal church administrators, our alumni and constituency for their qual- ity of facility and programming. Fame - because this is a year of tran- sition, a memorable year in history. In the course of the year we shall leave the soaring seventies fa decade in which we reached and surpassed our 1,000 student enrollment goal and graduated over 1,300 students, and march into the excit- ing eighties. We now enter a special peri- od of our common history - the last fifteen years of a full century of existence - as an institution chosen and mandat- ed by God. We do not wish for an extended stay in this world. Our hope is anchored in the school of eternity, but should time last, let the record show that together we worked and played and studied and prayed - here on these hallowed grounds - during Oakwood's hour of high destiny and meaningful transition. And if time should not last beyond our day, it will be sufficient that heaven re- cord our names as they who were happy participants in the greater transition from here to eternity.
