While teaching 'at the -Loma -Linda Academy shereceivedfher' Masters degree in French from the Uni- versity'of So,uthern California. in 1939. a y gAIlnff1-94fg1 Dr. 'wakelhani ti'a'veIedtol'the Philippines where forthe next 24fyears 'she 'worked as an- educator, teaching andencoiuraging young students and at the same time fallingain loves with them and their culture. While based in the,fPlh,il1ip.pines Dr..Wakeham returned to the states and studiedrj-at.,Stanford-University where she received herf Doctorate degreein' Linguistics in 1965. She returned to the Philippinesdto continue her labors there. In Novem- berof1-970 Dr.lrene Wakeham left the Philippines and in january of 1971-1 she came to the small black college in HuntsviIle,' Alabama-Oakwood. Forfivefyears Dr. Wakeham has been a member of Oak- WOOd'S'l:f3'CLIAIftY, andlhead of the Department of English. Unfortunatelylfor us,-however,Dr. Wakeham isleaving Oakwood College to be with her 96 year-old mother in California. Though we will miss he-ry greatly, she deserves herforthcomiing-retirement. Some day when she- retires from thefeducatlion business, she will have experienced :induction into the Andrews Hall of Eame, Outstanding Educator ofthe Year, W-ho's Who of American Women -Awa.rd,l. and listing World Who's Who of Authors.
