Dedication is an abused and over-used word, yet here on Oakwood's cam- pus, an individual serves whose mature life can most aptly be depicted and de- scribed as dedicated,'. Not for her, the mad heedless dog-eat-dog vicious climb to the top, not for her the self-centered Aquarian Did it my way not for her, the perpetual obsession with the status and self-aggrandizement. Hers is not a dazzling meteor flashing across Oakwood's skies. Here is the steady and comforting lunar radiance-as predictable as the seasons. For longer than she cares to admit, she has lent a sense of stability and steady growth to O.C. To her college she has given the zest of her youthful vitality. Take the abstract word Hloyaltyn. If you desired to make it concrete for an O.C. alumnus, substituting her name for the abstraction would prove incisively concrete. Not for her the mugwumpian fence-straddling common to our bandwagon generation, no one ever has to wonder where she stands. In an age of vampism, of amorality and a disturbing blurring of the sexes, she shines out as a lady,'. No one would dare tell a risque joke in her presence. Not a facade of a religious experience is hers, Sabbath finds her serving her church consistently and selflessly. Those students who are in the know realize that she cares deeply about them and their problems. Her life revolves around a central magnetic pole: The W. H. Green Memor- ial Library, from 6,000 volumes it has grown to a total now approaching 50,000. Although conservative in a Christian sense in her choice of books, she is progres- sive in many ways. In tune with the times, the library is developing a strong con- centration of books in the Afro-American genre. Ambitiously, she is beginning to change the whole library over to the Library of Congress classification. All her dreams are being poured into the plans for the new library-next on Oakwood's Master Plan. So don't knock loyalty . Don't knock dedication . For of these bricks are O.C.'s greatness built. And as long as educators like Miss Jannith Lewis answer O.C.'s call to service, its stability is assured.
