Not for her, the mad heedless dog-eat-dog vicious climb to the top, not for her the self-centered Aquarian Did it my way not for her, the perpetual obsession with the status and self-aggrandizement. Hers is not a dazzling meteor flashing across Oakwood's skies. Here is the steady and comforting lunar radiance-as predictable as the seasons. For longer than she cares to admit, she has lent a sense of stability and steady growth to O.C. To her college she has given the zest of her youthful vitality. Take the abstract word Hloyaltyn. If you desired to make it concrete for an O.C. alumnus, substituting her name for the abstraction would prove incisively concrete. Not for her the mugwumpian fence-straddling common to our bandwagon generation, no one ever has to wonder where she stands. In an age of vampism, of amorality and a disturbing blurring of the sexes, she shines out as a lady,'. No one would dare tell a risque joke in her presence. Not a facade of a religious experience is hers, Sabbath finds her serving her church consistently and selflessly. Those students who are in the know realize that she cares deeply about them and their problems. Her life revolves around a central magnetic pole: The W. H. Green Memor- ial Library, from 6,000 volumes it has grown to a total now approaching 50,000. Although conservative in a Christian sense in her choice of books, she is progres- sive in many ways. In tune with the times, the library is developing a strong con- centration of books in the Afro-American genre. Ambitiously, she is beginning to change the whole library over to the Library of Congress classification. All her dreams are being poured into the plans for the new library-next on Oakwood's Master Plan. So don't knock loyalty . Don't knock dedication . For of these bricks are O.C.'s greatness built. And as long as educators like Miss Jannith Lewis answer O.C.'s call to service, its stability is assured. , A Q X Y. Ti sg.- gig s Q wx iff Q Q5 A XX . X r X X? M il Nix ' a wi - A From the Presidenfs Desk ffya' Dr. F. W. Hale, Jr., Ph.D. adam My HUNTSVILLE. ALABAMA 35806 OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT My Dear Fellow Students: I have come this year to share with you of love, of life, and of learning. But I must admit that college campuses these days are a kind of orchestrated chaos, a terrible symphony of confrontation and confusion. However, we say we have the Light, and so we must depend upon the mutual ripeness of our judgment, wisdom, and respect to bear witness of that Light. The story of civilization is still unfinished, but there is yet a ray of hope, for we are investing in you who will reshape the future for better or for worse with the work of your own fingers. You are here until such a time as you are prepared to go out and short-circuit some of the bitterness and unkindness in the world. May you learn the importance of returning good for evil, returning soft answers for sharp criticism, restraining retaliation in the presence of rudeness, and being understanding when confronted by ignorance and stupidity. When you will have disciplined yourself to this point, then you will be ready for your mission-to go out and change the spiritual climate of the world. God bless you. Sincerely, I fic' Q , Frank W. She was educated in the elementary and high schools of Detroit and Chicago. She attended the Institute of Musical Art and Wayne State Univer- sity in Detroit. After her debut as a concert singer in Chicago in 1949, she continued her study with private instructors at the Chicago Conservatory of Music and in New York, Germany, and France. Franz Aller, director of South Pacific , George Schick, assistant conductor of the Chicago Symphony, and the late Phillip Manuel, internationally known harpsichord artist, were among those with whom she studied to improve her vocal technique. Recipient of numerous musical awards, Mrs. Lee skyrocketed to international fame after her New York debut in 1951. A great and dedicated singer . . . her performance is of the most lovely, finished, and exciting to be heard anywhere . . . said the music critic in a review in the New York Herald Tribune. Walter Whitworth of the Indianapolis News stated, There is no doubt about it Alyne Dumas Lee, soprano produces, in our opinion, the most beautiful sounds that ever came from a human heart. Madame Lee Concertized from 1951-1959 under the management of the National Concert Artist Corporation. Her travels carried her to forty-eight states of America, the Caribbean, and seven European countries. She was soloist under such conductors as Leonard Bernstein and Eu- gene Ormandy. In 1959, her health dictated a curtailment of her activities, but she continued her zest for mu- sic by directing various musical groups and performing as soloist on a limited basis. She accepted the offer to become Artist-in-Residence at Oakwood College in 1966. Since that time she contrib- uted unsparingly to the music students under her tutelage. She was designated Special Consultant for the Gala Night sponsored by the Civic Opera Society of Huntsville on November 1, 1969, be- cause six of the ten soloists starring in the performance were her voice students. Three of them were students of Oakwood College. While teaching at Oakwood College, she also served as Visiting Professor of Music at Alabama A Sc M University. She was born into the Seventh-day Adventist Church where she remained a faithful member all of her life. - n She is survived by her two daughters Angela and Susan, a brother, Herschel Andrew Alex- ander Dumasg seven nieces, six nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
