J resident essaae ip Dear Oakwoodite: Although Oakwood College has climbed a hill seventy-two years high to reach this point in its progress, this institution has no intention of declaring its race ended by coming to a state of rest. If the current develop- ments in our nation and world are harbingers of increased social problems as we observe the shallow condi- tions of aimlessness, restlessness, frivolity, immorality and rebellion, then Oakwood must sturdy itself to move forward to meet the struggles against complacence and conformity. Oakwood ' s vigor is nourished by its individuality, and that individuality comes from its spiritual frame of reference. Ours was a good beginning, because our forebearers began with God. No revolutionary concept then, yet quite remot e from the prevailing academic ideology of today. This look ahead, this devotion to an ideal, this vision of its worldwide mission was neither sudden nor fleeting. Nor must it be so now. The contesting spheres of academia must never dim our sense of priorities. But the endless task of planning for the future is ever before us. We, therefore, challenge trustees, adminis- trators, faculty, alumni and students to join with us and embark upon the harrowing journey of probing into the misty unknown, to seek as best we can new directions for progress at Oakwood College. Frank W. Hale, Jr., Ph.D. President
