Throughout the decades, hundreds of men and women have entered Oakwood College, have sat at the feet of Christian teachers, and have departed to make their contributions. Today, many more are passing through the sacred halls of Oakwood and entering the world to leave their footprints there. These, however, are leav- ing Oakwood College with newer and broader ideas. So it is that the 1967 ACORN carries as its theme: ENTER TO LEARN . . . DEPART TO SERVE. As you turn the pages of this 1967 annual, we hope that you may glimpse the effect of a Christian education upon the individual, and that you will re- member, through the years, that Oakwood College is dedicated to the work of preparing young men and women for service in this world, and in the world to come. Editor .ur 'K ws 6 3 'l!r Robert L. Reynolds, B.S., M.S., Professor Emeritus of Biology, holds a dear spot in the heart of many an Oakwoodite who has sat under his instruction. Since 1917 he has been dedicated to the cause of guiding young men and women into a life of service. For the last 21, years, his life has been interwoven with that of Seventh-day Adventist youth. Fess Reynolds has the unique distinction of having taught under the supervision of George Washington Carver in the department of Agriculture at Tuskegee Institute. As result of his wide experience, he has been very successful in leading many to a fuller life. Dedic -1 II P i I 1 1 I l I lation L, Henrietta Emanuel, B.A.,,M,A., Professor Emeritus of English has given forty-nine years of her life to the cause of education. Forty-eight of the forty-nine years have been dedicated to the fostering of Christian Education. Miss Emanuel, a well-read professor, holds life credentials from the General Confer- ence of Seventh-day Adventists in five subjects namely: Bible, Biology, English, History and Spanish. For eighteen years she has been instrumental in aiding Oakwood Students to find their places in the world. T' um B ,Tx ,N 'sr 'N N.. 'x un .fu 'Wg '44, .' vu. Q --IQ.. ,Q .err Dear Oakwoodites: I congratulate you for having selected Oakwood College as the institution of your choice in higher education. You have come in an era of great expectations in the face of historic dilemmas. There is open before you an unparalleled opportunity to build new and firmer foundations under your feet. You stand at the gateway of an age of expansion, of space advancement, of ecumenism, of a new morality, of the flowering of modern imagination, and an unprecedented explosion of new knowledge and technologies. We are proud that you have recognized the great advantage that Oakwood College has to offer you. I have no apologies to make to anyone that we do things in a big way. We have a set of values that distinguishes us from being just another institution of higher learning. We have a solidarity and a unity of spirit and purpose that have helped us to ac- complish many things during the year. From our strengths have come great actions. We have great visions today, and we can move forward to even greater achievements tomorrow. I challenge you to show the world that Oakwood College makes men and women of boys and girls: that it provides remarkably clear insights for the development of the human spiritg that it attempts to establish religious convictions that are exhibited in outward patterns of behavior: that it encompasses an environment that is a potent force in spiritual, academic, and social development: and that it considers experience - actual and vicarious - a most important aspect of total development. You are Oakwood's greatest ambassadors. Let your influence be positive and dramatic, for you are our most important investment. Yours for Oakwood College, Frank W. Care must be taken that the develop- ment meet the aims and principles of Christian Education, yet immediate needs such as housing and instructional facilities must not be allowed to put into oblivion, the need for an up-to-date curriculum, qualified teachers, and the educational opportunities of today. Through the seventy decades of Oakwood's history, men and women have been emerging, not as the immature novices that entered, but as mature, well-rounded individuals with ability enough to be good followers, and initiative enough to be dynamic leaders. It is through the many organizations to which the student is exposed at Oakwood that he develops a lasting sense of responsibility. ,,..f- .iI i 35 is un .. y fi . el we i X ,d. I y . R SX, . However, as maturing men' and women, we must realize that prosperity and adversity make up life, and that it is only as we are able to successfully cope with our daily confronta- tions that we find the essence of life. REYNOLDS In Memoriam Robert L. Reynolds, born February 4, 1895, in Columbus, Ohio, calmly slept away March 10, 1967, in Riverside Sanitarium 8: Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, after a prolonged illness. He came to Oakwood College in the Division of Natural Science where his ambition and interest stirred many youthful minds to achieve and grow. From this Division he was invited to take the first principalship of Oakwood College Academy which he held for one year 1945-1946 before accepting principalship at Baltimore S. D. A. Academy, Baltimore, Md. Never a slacker nor one to shirk duty, he accepted the principalship of Pine Forge Institute, Pine Forge, Pa. It was his privilege to serve as the second principal of this institution. He served Oakwood College from 1951 till his death. Though his health began to fail, he continued teaching even through a part of this academic year. HE SLEEPS, BUT HIS WORKS LIVE AFTER HIM. V3 s 0 G f 5 ww Q ' ' 21' x 13f3'yX 'N i25 , ' any . Thy standards will not fail, Our hearts are filled with wondrous cheer When thoughts of thee draw near. We love thy pines, thy elms, thy oaks, And campus always green. Thy many flowers and distant mounts, Form one impressive scene. From states afar and isles of sea Thy students come to thee, And fain do linger in thy halls Enlightened truthfully, From nature's scenes they ever learn And study from thy soilg Till many more thy works discern We'll pray for thee and toil. As happy birds come in the spring And sing not for their pay, Rich, natural melodies they bring, Cheering throughout the day. We too will serve thee faithfully In all we do and say. We hope in God, we trust in theeg True and loyal we'l1 be. Chorus: To thee, our dear Oakwood, To thee we shall ever sing. For decades thou hast stood: i Thy name should ever ring. Here' we've spent our happy days, So we love to sing thy praise, And wherever we may be We'll always be true to thee, Our worthy dear old O. C. O. B. Edwards Alexander, Ida 110 W. 7th Street Mt.
