Q, -I U fbeofcafeoffo Dear Dr. Cooper: Four years have passed since the first day that I sat at your feet as a beginning student in chemistry. I was full of zeal to acquire an inkling of knowledge in this particular field. I now feel that I have successfully eaten, with delight, all of the preparatory knowledge- able food placed before me by you for graduate work in chemistry. The material was sweet to the taste and mellow to the stomach. It was more than a pleasure to have had the oppor- tunity to learn from the 66lVIaster scientist of Oakwood. It was my privilege to share your mind, to drink of the cup of knowledge, and to partake of the bread of science. You taught me that science is the captain and ex- perimentation the practice. I learned my lesson well, but it all originates from you directly or indirectly. I have a love for chemistry that will never die, and I have a dream that some day I might possess that knowl- edge in chemistry that you have and serve humanity faithfully, as you are doing. The greatest contribution one can make is aiding others, and in doing so you have exemplified well the HScientific Attitudev. I must say good-bye while I tread the path that you have trod and face the world that you have faced, how- ever, I have had good preparation from you to accept the challenge. It is not likely that Books have ever played such an important part in the lives of so many as they do today. The Book is the open sesame to the wells of learning. Presently new skills have been developed that have increased the reading speed and with it a corresponding acceleration in comprehension that makes it possible and pleasurable to read more books . . . gg.-an-null sm, ,...,f Books are keys to wisdom's treasure: Books are gates to lands of pleasure: Books are paths that upward leadg Books are friends, Come let us read. By: EMILIE POULSSON 'F '- . I From the volume of I Love Books by John D. Snider-a voluminous reader of around 600 books a year-are taken the words of a lonely monk, who afterwards became known as the Archbishop of Poictiers. uOur house is empty save only myself and the rats and mice who nibble in solitary hunger. There is no voice in the hall, no tread on the stairs. The clock has stopped . . . the pump creaks no more. But I sit here with no company but books, dipping into dainty honeycombs of literature. All minds in the world,s history find their focus in the library . . 4 1 . . . This is the pinnacle of the temple from which we may see all the kingdoms of the World and the glory of them. I keep Egypt and the Holy Land in the closet next to the window. On the side of them are Athens and the empire of Rome. Never was such an army mustered as I have here. No general ever had such soldiers as l. No kingdom ever had half such illustrious subjects as mine or half as well governed . . . The disciplines to which the college campus strives to expose those that enter to learn, alas, are the living words of hooks . . . Mower I-umm 'i bulb-avi It .MMV '1- . . . The expanding paper-hook industry has undergone a face lifting and the paper hack has a new facade. Today a student can purchase a library with some of the foremost classics of the Vlfestern World for ten dollars. Book learning is not tabooed, in fact too many, college students engage in athletic reading, and it amounts to that, just before examina- tion. To them a hook is not an obstacle to he overcome. To appreciate books with fervor is one of the primary aims of Ci Pictures are ICl'IIfI01l'S to any lands, But a book is a door that ready stands, To lzinz who will open and to Outside Where the I'l'l'CfS and plans are free and 101.076 Pictures are zt'1'r1z1o1t's tlzrollglz zvlziclz zvc look. M-Q ELDER CLARENCE T. RICHARDS E.lVf.C.-B.A. 19403 S.D.A. Seminary MA. 1952 Andrew University B.D. 1962. Every young person ought to be prepared to' face the practical realities of life-its op- portunities, its responsibilities, its defeats and its successes. How he is to meet these experiences, whether he is to become master or victim of circumstances, depends upon his preparation to cope with them. True education therefore must include more than a preparation for a chosen profession. lt must encompass more than the intellectual equipment for making a comfortable liv- ing. True education must be centered in a knowledge of God and His son Jesus Christ. This is the knowledge which is obtained by a systematic study of the Bible. As an edu- cating power the Bible has no equal. Its study broadens the vision and strengthens the mind. A knowledge of its principles is an essential preparation for every calling. The courses in the Division of Religion and Theology are designed to develop within the student a deep appreciation of the Bible, as a means for determining the true and workable philosophy of life. The practical results of these courses of study have been a source of joy and satisfaction to both teachers and students. This is God's ideal. it ...iw L-4.-. 1 ,, 4 .. With the student body on his mind at all times. Zin... Books form the connecting link from era to era conveying a wealth of information to which we can refer. Our records are compiled in the form of books which contain the history of present times and times past, men's thoughts and ideas which have gone down in history as the templates upon which society and civilization depend. In 1896, Oakwood College was founded. From year to year, decade to decade, yea, century to century, the pages and chapters of Oakwood have been recorded and are still being recorded. Every administrator, teacher and student makes vital contributions to the pages of this book of such a noble institution. It is through these contributions that success IS attained. Writhin the pages of this annual are the portraits of those who have come to draw from the fount of knowledge. From the hall of religion, science, music and from the singing of choirs to the ringing of bells, we see the pages and chapters of this institution being recorded. It was Milton who said, 'GA Good Book is like the precious life-blood of a Masterls Spiritf, Certainly, we can see the spirit of the Master in those who have come here and have battled against overwhelming odds and yet rose like a frigate above the tide to attain their goals and write another chapter in the annals of Oakwood. These pages and chap- ters of Oakwood's history, filled with the Master's spirit, must inspire those who come here to do even greater works than at first anticipated. This book is never closed. The chapters will never cease to be written until the clock of time points to the last second of earth's history and the Great I Am proclaims alt is Finished. The overall picture of this leaves us with a vivid impression of this institution which functions with the knowledge from books, the skillful guidance of teachers, counselors and professors, inspiration from parents, encouragement from friends and divine lead- ership, preparing us for a nobler service to mankind. JAMES .f f ' .i3i7,,z.,,,.:.-..-s,..Qsv, .C , . ..,i.., A, K,--f-... ...YH-v f Religious Vice-President of U.S.lVl. MR. DENNIS ROSS Education is the development of the physical, mental, and spiritual powers. To have one without the other is to neglect Education in its fullest sense. Oakwood Col- lege endeavors not only to supply the physical and mental needs of its students, but also the Spiritual. We the students and instructors of Oakwood College believe that God who is the Creator and Sustainer of our lives should not be thought upon only once a week, but also to he carried into our everyday life, including the classrooms. To teach life, omitting the life giver is a vague concept of life in its true meaning. Therefore, Christianity is spoken of and accepted at Oakwood Col- lege with much joy making each student and.teacher better citizens of America, and preparing us to he citi- zens of Cod's glorious Kingdom soon to come. It's interesting too. she says. 30059 Between the many shelves and nooks Lie rows and rows of varied books Strewn along the shelf . . . ahg they Are thoughts of men that rule our day. Thin books, thick books, paperbacks, And untold hordes upon the racks, Burn as torches for each man, For they are guide-lights in our hand. Books impart truthg that truth they teach, Into the minds of men they reach To hang upon the mental hooks The facts, which are derived from books. Our greatest debt will ever be To the men who could foresee The need for light, for they forsook Known ignorance . . . and wrote a hook. f. Starks THE STUDENTS' THOUGHTS We students come from far and near From their ideas we plan to hlend To drop our bags and tarry here, A new philosophy for man, To scan fair education's wall, Yes, one a little better than To dwell apart in hallowed halls. Ones before which did not last, Wie crossed the sea and countryside For time moves on as old times pass. To reach the place which we now pride First we seek the Lord to leadg The books are ever by our side, We seek Him first for Heis the seed We in our books all trust confide. From which true knowledge small and great We hope to learn from learned men, Give freedom to emancipate. Does he quest for truth as one whose thirst is unslaked? Does his mind probe the conditions of his time and station . . . seeking to solve the riddles . . . to set straight the crooked . . . to light the dark . . . to heal the wounded . . . to distill from the sum of his experience an essence of the verities? . . . Unremitting pursuit of truth, the product of which is creative endeavor, is indisputable evidence of man's heritage from Him in whose image man is made. Because the quality of his mind deter- mines the quality of his life, a wise man lays up knowl- edge. It is better than choice gold. It is strength in- exhaustible. For its source is God.
