Ashby as a Dean Acorn Tribute to N. E. Ashby Mr. N. E. Ashby as a Teacher Just as famous people of world renown leave autographs as symbols of remembrance, N. E. Ashby left to Oakwood College his auto- graph. He did not have it carved in rare stone by dexterous craftsmen, nor did he write it on fine paper with expensive ink, but he wrote it with his life upon our hearts. As a teacher, a dean, a counselor, and a friend, N. E. Ashby was a power in our lives. He awakened in us a desire to acquire attributes of diligence in scholarship and personal integrity. He taught us to search for truth and to discipline our minds. All of us who knew him are a part of him, and those of us who have recently come to Oakwood, missing the opportunity to know Dean Ashby personally, can become acquainted with him through the autograph he left with us. During these sacrificial days of drudgery and discipline, it is easy to agree with Horace that each passing year robs us of some possession. But when viewed in the framework of eternal interests, a Christian college education proves to be a blue chip investment indeed! The hours of each passing day are precious beyond computation and there are fabulous rewards in store for students who wisely improve their talent of time. Our particular age of atomic power, speed, and space is pregnant with promise but it is also extremely hazardous and challenging. To avoid the hazards and to reap the promises of the times before us will require unusual readiness. This is the time to prepare vigorously and thoroughly for an even more startling, eventful future At this sunset hour of another school year, the Administration and Faculty of Oakwood College want to thank each student who has contributed the warmth of his personality to our throbbing campus life. lt will bring lasting ioy to review in The Acorn the scenes of '62-'63 which we enioyed together. Our sincere wish for you is that you will have peaceful days ahead, give service to the Cause of God and enioy abounding success. - Garland J. Millet ' I . ,, . Prince Tolbert Charles Winslow Judy Simons Henry Roberts Willie Griffin Patricia Dent Theodore Watkins Irene Bowie Lorriane Bowie Beautinia Wright Charlotte Woodard Between past eternity and future eternity God has given to man the time of life-a priceless talent. Because of its intrinsic worth, time is not given man to be consumed in self-gratification, or to be dissipated in purposeless activity. Conversely, it is to be improved by the development of character to the glory of the great benefactor. This is an obligation and responsibility of every rational being for inspiration has declared that of no talent that God has given will he require a more strict account of our time. Of all the ages of life, we believe that youth is the time when enthusiasm, energy, idealism, and a concern for one's fellowman can be channeled most readily into the avenue of successful Christian living. The program at Oakwood College Academy is expressly designed to guide our youth in those educational activities through which they might experience the satisfactions and ioys that accrue to those who rightly improve their time. Our sincere congratulations are extended to the graduating seniors of 'l963. To all students desirous of making the best use of the time allotted for their secondary education, we extend a cordial invitation to join the Oakwood College Academy family. J. T. We, Judy Annette Simons and Carl Lennox Crosby, represent a group of 150 students now attending Oakwood College Academy. We represent both the happy-this-my-second-year class and the anxious, curious, half afraid wonder- what-my-first-year-will-be-like group. We represent a student body searching for a Christian education in the Christian environment of a Christian school, a student body seeking spiritual strength in the spiritual atmosphere af a school built on a spiritual foundation. We represent students who want to get away from the public evils caused in the public influence of public schools. Yes, these are the students we represent, but now let's get a glimpse of this place that will be our home for the next nine months. Here Judy arrives vviTh The anricipation of having a wonderful senior year As we meet her she seems To have a personality that will win her many friends Here in The soliTude and refinement of Moran Hall's chapel wiTh The melodies of The Baby Grand Piano our Two sTudenTs fl relax. Judy waits patiently as the young lady at the desk searches tor the books that she hopes to be available.
