Winslow, Dr. Z. H. Coberly, Dr. Gaines R. Partridge, Miss Irene Meri- deth, and Mrs. Ann johnson. ' x -fqgrll' Fofwwofad High on the list of necessities for bodily survival stands water. The tiny drops of dew which impearls the blade of morning grass have their contribution to make, no less than the circumjacent oceans. But for all its service to mankind, water contains many properties - depth, strength, beauty, power, play - First on the list of necessities for spiritual survival stands 11 knowledge of God. The lisping prayer - words which fall from the lips of the toddler waft their way skyward as do the sonorous tones of the aged minister. And the learning of God contains much - depth, strength, beauty, power, joy -- Because Oakwood is dedicated to the service of leading men to God, even as water leads them to life, the ACORN staff presents for your edification the 1961-62 annual, with its theme - WATER. so cv-tfgg 4.1656 ' i-H' Associate Editor - Assistant Editor -L Executive Secretary --r ACORN STAFF Ralph C. Coberly, a third generation Seventh-day Adventist, is one of four children born to Elder and Mrs. Robert Coberly. As a boy, he pursued his education through our de- nominational schools from the Cveryb beginning. During his senior year at the Gem State Academy his father's health failed. Thrown upon his own resources, he went to work, stacking hay and digging potatoes. This knowledge of how to work, plus wise use of study hours, enabled him to grad- uate from Walla Walla College. Though he labored eight to ten hours per day Cbeginning with milking at three-thirty each morningb, he found time not only to maintain a high scholastic average but also to persuade Miss Elga Barclay that her future was to permanently intertwine with his. She agreed, stipulating, however, that they wait for three years before marrying, as she wished to finish her nurse train- ing. Time has proved the wisdom of their decision. Throughout the years,-twenty of them in China's mission field-Mrs. Coberly's nursing skill has made her an able partner in this husband-wife team. Ever eager to continue his learning, Dr. Coberly seized furloughs and enforced vacations to obtain his Masters' degree from the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Wash- ington, D. C. After the Communists forced all missionaries to leave China permanently in 1950, he studied at Oregon State College, receiving his Doctorate in 1952. He joined the faculty of Oakwood in 1958 as Professor of Education and Psychology. That this brief account of Dr. Coberly's determination to receive his training despiue the lack of any financial help may be an incentive to the students of Oakwood is the hope of .... 'W X7--r 4 Our President As An Administrator Presidents Message Nestled deep in the throbbing heart of a valley famed for its water-power, Oak- wood College constantly gazes on waters wonders. The luxuriance of our campusg the marvel of our city's big spring, gushing at 24 million gallons its never-failing life streamg the arresting beauties of our state's water-inspired wonderlandg the miracle- workings of electricity in our region: these things bring to mind the theme of the 1962 Acorn. What a fitting symbol is water for a Christian institution! Here the pure streams of the Water of Life lead to power of performance. Here the principles of the Wford refresh us daily, causing new beauties to spring forth in lives given to Gods plan. The memories of the recent past pictorialized in this book will be fondly cherished. For the future, it is the sincere wish of the administration and of the faculty that the students of Oakwood College will ever stand as trees planted by the rivers of waters. Garlmzd I. But, more important, it opens the gate to oppor- tunities for unlimited service-service to God and to man. The diploma representing an education based on God's Word is, of course, the most desirable and of most value. The Holy Scriptures are the perfect standard of truth, and as such should he given the highest place in education. To ohtain an education worthy of the name, we must receive a knowledge of God, the Creator, and of Christ, the Redeemer, as they are revealed in the sacred 1vord. ' Education, 17.
