HIS year's V. group, gathered lrom an extremely unlikely looking assortment, soon surprised everybody but themselves by developing into a clicking combination which finished the season with a highly respectable 7-6 record, Arriv- ing at the Oakwood gym as individuals, they soon learned to work together as a single unit under the intuition, mind, and excellent instruction ol' Coach Bill Butterlield. Despite a temporary set-back due to the absence ol' several tirst-string players, the V. displayed an enormous desire, usually maniliested in a posi- tive result. to win. A scoring combination ot' Wcilt Dent and Russ Griswold, augmented by Mike Twinings ability to get the ball to the inside, and the rebounding ot' Dic Townley and Pete Lane, presented a solid wall ot' basketball talent, which few teams had the ability to break down. These live of the starting team were reinforced by an exceptionally strong second team which deserves a great deal ol' credit lor the total per- formance displayed. XXfe hope that they will do as well as next year. H15 start ol' the B-ball season was gtcctcc a mass oli uncoordinated lfreshmen and Soph- omore players, Coach Al Anderson selected twelve ol' the most likely in appearance and miraculously transformed them into adecluate participants in the game. By the end ol' the season they had learned to work together well enough to linish with tive straight wins, ending with a total record ol' seven wins and three losses. K Because of inadequate transportation facilities. Coach Al Anderson was not able to carry the full squad to all contests, thus cutting the actual play- ing time. However. every member ol' the team put in .1 considerable .unount ol time. leading ulti- mately to self-knowledge, sell'-confidence, and sell'- improvement. The basic structure ol' the team was developed around the skills ol Ditk Schwartz and Nick lfedoruks rebounclingg Bobby W'eaver's aggres- siveness and driving abilityg Hugo Sonnenschien's outside shotsg and Howie Bullets almost profes- sional hook shot, They were competently backed by Roger Thornhill.
