Carolyn Hogg Girls' Council VERY Monday night, Joyce McKinstry, Dean of Girls, and various representatives have met under the auspices of Girls' Council to dis- cLlSS the different problems and concerns that arise in the girls' dorms and other areas of school life. A try at putting to bed and deciding the neces- sary regulations for meal lateness resulted from these discussions. Not exclusively concerned with disciplinary matters, the Girls' Council has claimed credit for projects of a different nature. Among the more pleasant accomplishments have been trips to I, B. M. and the Christmas Party, not to mena tion food vended regularly each Tuesday and Thursday night to tide dieters over until the next meal. The conversion of the basement in the Girls' New Dorm into a rumpus room complete with piano has been one of the Council's major tasks. Through the year, with Mickeys invaluable help, Girls' Council has tried not only to assume more responsibility, but also to stimulate in the dorms that same sense of responsibility. Boys' Council Hli Boys' Council, without a doubt, is one of the most important councils on campus. The reason for its prominence is the responsible part it plays in the total organization that directs Oakwood. The Council. during the past years. has gone through many stages: namely, its birth. its strug- gle for survival, and its tight for recognition, The Council, at the present time, is in the third stage. and to many of us this is the most difficult, Dur- ing the struggle for recognition, we have found comfort in the assurance and guidance of our faculty advisers, Alfred Anderson, Dean of Boys, and Francis Henderson, This struggle for recog- nition is far from its end, and it must be carried on by next year's Council. The success or failure of this struggle will determine whether or not the Boys' Council really exists or is merely a name, With that in mind, we would like to wish next year's Council a smooth path to its goal. Study Committee Hli Study Committee began its activities this year by sponsoring an assembly in which the study hall rules were presented to the student body. ln this way. everyone became acciuainted with them. As the year adxanced, the tommittee, under the helpful guidance of its faculty advisers, Mary Rhodes and Curtis Newlin, was available for sug- gestions made by both students and faculty. As a result of this, a survey concerning the new X Period and study halls offered helpful suggestions for possible improvement of these periods. One thing which proved of interest to the students, particularly Seniors, was another assem- bly held by the Study Committee. Richard- A. E. Brooks. Ph.D., professor of English at Vassar. and NXfinifred Numpty jordan. a freshman who was graduated from Oakwood last year, discussed with us the necessity of organized study at college. This year the Study Committee was able to ac- complish a great deal. and it should. in the years to come, become .1 more important part of Oak- wood Sthool. Wo1'k Committee HE main objectives of the Work Committee are to see that the Community Service Pro- gram is carried out and to keep the campus re- spectably clean. ' Witlm the experience of Mrs. Philby, we at- tempted to fit the job to the worker and vice- versa. To try to balance the irksome job and the easy job, there were two work-job rotations. CAfter all, why go dish-pan when you can blister your fingers Cutting pictures for Yosh?j To help the grass retake areas previously designated for lawn, but which had been mutilated into paths for between-class-rushers and before-meal-runners, signs were placed at the appropriate intersections. We also organized campus cleanups and at one time surprised the boys' locker room with a coat of paint. Because of the fact that all work-jobs are even- tually done, that the lawn crawled over the mud, and that the grass was able to be discerned through the candy wrappers, we feel that the ob- jectives were achieved. Calendar Committee HIS year, the Calendar Committee added an- other assignment to the long list of activities for which it is responsible. It has made a con- certed effort towards changing the set routine into which our programs were drifting. Perhaps, as a direct result of experimentation, programs that have been presented have not always met with approval. However, this is to be expected in the trial period of any new idea, and the committee hopes that it has now developed a foundation for further presentations. Besides these programs, the committee also sponsors the Vespers and Assem- bly speakers, decorates for banquets before dances, and sets all of the dates for our planned activities, which include class plays and picnics, glee club concerts, and other music programs, even all ath- letic events. Lynn Heiman and Brian johnston were both new to their positions as chairmen this year, but, with Ruth Craig's untiring help, they adapted easily to their new tasks. Social Committee LTHOUGH being on the Social Committee may seem to be all play and no work, this organization plans Friday night activities, dances. and goes over the social code. They meet every Tuesday night with Bill Butterheld, Joyce Mc- Kinstry, and Al Anderson. This year, together with the Student Council, the Junior and Senior members of the committee have taken over the responsibility of social duty. This has proved successful generally, and the stu- dents have tried to cooperate. Many hours went into decorating for dances. More than once, energetic members stayed up until all hours putting last minute touches on dec- orations. During the dances, we slept in order to conserve our strength for cleaning up later! Of course, the committee always got help in these things, so it wasn't really so difhcult as we pro- fess. To end a wonderful year, Bill Butterfield gave the committee a party, with real food and televi- sion! All of this could never have materialized without student support, however, and we grate- fully acknowledge this effort. Lyvfl In rigbl, firm! mri'--,-C.iinillc- Nxfalwyn. Ceramics Club NDER the instruetion of Mrs. Philby, the Ceramics Club has steadily progressed from the basic fundamentals of producing rolled dishes to turning out a variety of objects: dishes, statuettes, jewelry, and dish-tiles. In the future, we hope to be able to experiment with other phases, possibly with a mold. Each of us has found teramics to be a rewarding experience, but we are somewhat surprised to discover that there is more imagination required than talent. and more patience than ability. Cooking Club If have found an exciting retipe for good fun in the antits of the cooking club, and we know that the definite testimony to the success of this club is that in the course of time we have gained a few pounds. Under Nancy Peery's adept and help- ful hand, we even managed the greatest triumph-a meal from our own recipes, For us, the club has been an essential part of Oakwood life. and we shall never forget its place in this year. 21 Xe' Choir HE Oakwood Choir. under the capable direction ol' Bert Mason, and accompanied by Nichola Bailey, has succeeded in perfecting a repertoire. rang- ing from French and German Renaissance selections to early American folk songs and Negro spirituals. This year. as always. has proved to be successful-'valuable not only to the choir, but also to each audience. Music Appreciation Club N any Sunday afternoon between three and four, sundry melodious strains may issue from the assembly room. The Music Appreciation Club has given programs calculated to appeal to catholic tastes, The classics range from Bach to Beethoven and have been well aired: there have been scheduled programs of Dixieland. and modern jazz. ballet and opera, musical comedy and tolls songs. Often. in the spring. the club met out ol doors, adding much charm to its music. Piano Ensemble HE Ensemble for three pianos, directed by Isabella Forsythe Taylor is another popular mu- sical group, It has entertained, on many occasions: the Christmas and Easter services, and the Spring Concert, The Ensemble consists ot Barbara Beasley. thc- King twins, Cam Xwalwyn, Gwen Mackel, Mich- iko Takeda, Amelia Cobb, and Nicholas Bailey, The flute trio: Meg Davis, Beth Lane, and Susan XY'right. has entertained. as has the string trio: Witlter Dent, Elizabeth Engel, and Margot Soley, playing viOlins and cello, respectively. Oakwood appreciates these instrumental groups. 7 Typing Club HE Typing Club is composed of nine diligent students who meet every Tuesday evening to perfect the valuable skill of typing. This is accom- plished through a series of exercises which the stu- dents perform under the skilled experience of Eu- genia Newlin. Climaxing these lessons is a graded series of drills, which determine the degree of pro- ficiency attained. This club provides an opportunity for each mem- ber to derive personal satisfaction from the accom- plishment of something that he will use for many years to come. 25 Literary Magazine N its third year, the Oakwood Literary Magazine is rapidly becoming an established tradition. Ever since the publication of the '33 lI w'kilwp. Oak- wood's tirst literary venture, come spring, all of the schools creatively-inclined begin scurrying around on a sort of literary toot. As wheels begin to turn, typewriters to click, there is a general surge of creativity. Inspiration runs the gamut, and slowly though steadily, a literary magazine emerges. This year the Lilenzry Magazine has upheld the tine tradition of its predecessors, and has offered many indications of exceptional literary ability among contemporary Oakwoodites. The 'SS Lil. Magazizze contains a variety of literary forms, and it is gratify- ing to see that contributions from members of all four classes have been included. Dramatics Club HE club activities program is designed to pro- vide an outlet for the individual, The Dramatics Club has fulfilled this purpose. We met every week to discuss future theatrical conquests. During workshop periods, we impro- vised and studied dramatic techniques. Mr. Clark. Cam Wfalwyn, and Cathy West have given us the leadership necessary to conduct a well- organized club. Working mainly with each other, we have not pro- duced for public tonsumptiong however, the reading of The Sire de Maltroit's Door was the highpoint of our work. x Lelfl in rigbl. .teuled-joseplu Cohen, Business Editor: Norma Busch, Nichola Bailey, Adviser, john Ross. Black on Whitt- NOTHER Black nu l! l1i!e extra, Among the unique features which distinguished this year's school newspaper was its mode of publicity. One could be certain that at precisely the same moment that the Black on White went to press, slick sheets of dittoed matter would begin to appear, heralding the latest edition. And . . . the latest edition was usually quite worthy of its lavish build-up. In addition to its interest-holding content, the Black on llvbile has been able to come out in printed form rather than mimeographed sheets as in past years. Also, the paper was granted permission to secure advertise- ments, this move made it possible for the staff to enlarge Black on l! l1ile to six sheets. Through- out the year, Black on llvbife has attempted to print items which spotlight the interests of the entire Oakwood community. At high tides and low, all achievements should be attributed to the unflagging eH0rts of the entire newspaper staff. HIS year's V. group, gathered lrom an extremely unlikely looking assortment, soon surprised everybody but themselves by developing into a clicking combination which finished the season with a highly respectable 7-6 record, Arriv- ing at the Oakwood gym as individuals, they soon learned to work together as a single unit under the intuition, mind, and excellent instruction ol' Coach Bill Butterlield. Despite a temporary set-back due to the absence ol' several tirst-string players, the V. displayed an enormous desire, usually maniliested in a posi- tive result. to win. A scoring combination ot' Wcilt Dent and Russ Griswold, augmented by Mike Twinings ability to get the ball to the inside, and the rebounding ot' Dic Townley and Pete Lane, presented a solid wall ot' basketball talent, which few teams had the ability to break down. These live of the starting team were reinforced by an exceptionally strong second team which deserves a great deal ol' credit lor the total per- formance displayed. XXfe hope that they will do as well as next year. H15 start ol' the B-ball season was gtcctcc a mass oli uncoordinated lfreshmen and Soph- omore players, Coach Al Anderson selected twelve ol' the most likely in appearance and miraculously transformed them into adecluate participants in the game. By the end ol' the season they had learned to work together well enough to linish with tive straight wins, ending with a total record ol' seven wins and three losses. K Because of inadequate transportation facilities. Coach Al Anderson was not able to carry the full squad to all contests, thus cutting the actual play- ing time. However. every member ol' the team put in .1 considerable .unount ol time. leading ulti- mately to self-knowledge, sell'-confidence, and sell'- improvement. P 'This year, as in the spring of every year, Coach Bill Butterfield carefully looked over the twenty- four candidates who tried out for the tennis team. so that a winning combination of boys could be formulated. For the tournaments, Mr. B. se- lected only five boys, who played five singles and two doubles. These five players included three returning lettermen of last year, Charles Janeway, john Grummon, and David Burnettg and two new squad members, Peter Bang and Mike McGinnis. They were strongly backed by a second team which gave the depth valuable for future years. Although lacking the strength of last years squad, Oakwood battled hard throughout the en- tire season, playing against more experienced teams, such as Wooster, Storm King, and Mill- brook. The results verify the fact that Oakwood had a good tennis team. cshluin f, CJ..,AnR- cd: Basebag R ITH the first signs of spring, the baseball team emerged from a winters hibernation. full of enthusiasm and the proverbial hustle. Although the nucleus of last year's team had dc- parted, the Black and White was determined to improve upon the previous year's record. This season marked the return of Fran Henderson to the coaching post after a two year absence, with newcomer Mark Peery as his assistant. Holdover from last years varsity included Lowell Croll. Dick Wood, Bill Thomas, and John Ross. The ll. V. produced such ballplayers as Sandy Csobaji. Ed Haight, and Terry Murphy. Newcomers in- cluded Russ Griswold, Dave White, Pete Riddle- berger, Glen Bibler, and Chuck Kyle. Although many were lacking in varsity experience, the schedule provided sufficient oposition, and the Oakwood squad was soon a well-rounded ball club. This year's schedule included games with St. Peter's, Staatsburg, Millbrook Memorial, Storm King, Arlington, Pine Plains, and Wappingers liallsi With a wealth of material and a fine coach- ing staff, the Quakers seemed destined to produce one of the best baseball squads in recent years. Led by the friendli- ness and purposeful attitude of the school, the Class of '58 has learned to become happier, more mature individuals. We have a lot of enthusiasm and spirit, but behind our smiling faces lie some pretty deep thoughts. The Freshmen have come together from many places into an atmosphere of good will, where there is no prejudice. All seem to have benetited from it. At the beginning of the year we had a class picnic, which was fun for all while we became well accluainted. However. because of an unequal number of boys and girls, many of our social 3 9 activities have been shared with thc- Sophomores highlighted by the Freshman-Sophomore night. Our main goal, class unity, was slow in starting. but was greatly aided by these and other activities. We are confident that this will continue to build up as we grow older. Sitting on the bottom rung of the Oakwood ladder, the Freshmen have been able to look Lip to and learn from the older, more experienced classes. We look forward with eagerness to the remaining years to come, knowing that with many added pleasures come greater opportunities to show our increasing abilities. In our studies, social activities. sports, and community friendliness, we have the experiences ol' three years at Oakwood. During 1954, our second project evolvedsthe traditional Carnival with the gym a field of tents and booths. This year, our junior. we have Frances Nolan to thank for staging The Male Animal, a tom- -li edy in which two men vie for a woman during a College football weekend. To climax our fun and concerted efforts, we planned the annual junior- Senior Dance, sealing the unity of our class.
