Together We Are Better at Oakwood High Hanne Jensen was this year’s exchange student from Denmark. She was involved in many various activities. Hanne really enjoyed being here at Oakwood High. Hanne’s future plans are to study medicine in the states. We wish Hanne the best in everything she chooses to do. This year, Oakwood Annual Staff recognizes Mrs. Deborah Clow for her hours of dedication to Student Council, Jets, and Scholastic Bowl. Besides all her |ard work in these activities, she has an outstanding school spirit. W feel she sets ' ae example for the students to follow. The research on drugs, alcohol, legal rights, pregnancy, and diabetes are all worth it when the paper is put out, or wins recognition. Together the staff writes and some of them go to camps, conventions in Kansas City, Mo., and contests at EIU. Changes have been made, but for the 2nd year, the Times is an award winning paper and the staff is award deserving. 12 Annual Staff I Front row (left to right) Cheri Divan, Michelle Anderegg, Michelle Brown, Laura Foley, Back row: Terri Fitzgerald, Jenny Wise, Amy Myers, Dana Winn, Alice Bailey, Abby Elms, Staci Witmer, Julie King, Kim Edwards, Ami Wendell, Stacie Bartlett, Lori Van Vickie, Mindy Hobick, Traci Koester, Advisors: Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Meharry EDITOR: MINDY HOBICK General Manager: Dana Winn Layout Manager: Ami Wendell Ad Manager: Stacie Bartlett Photographer: Alice Bailey Sales Manager: Cheri Divan Thanks to Mindy and her great staff you have a fantastic yearbook this year. Their jobs entail a variety of duties. Responsibilities include checking books in and out, watching for overdue books, seeing that overdue books are returned, filing catalog cards, typing purchase orders for library materials, processing books and magazines as well as filing other materials like newspaper articles, and answering research questions. The student librarians serve a vital function within the school and within the structure of the library. Being a librarian is much more complicated job than many may suspect and just keeping track of the materials in the library creates a full time job. Their assistance makes it possible for the Oakwood High School library to be one which has proven itself to be a valuable part of the high school. The Librarians’ Club is sponsored by Mrs. Libby Fathauer. 19 Student Council Back row: Sean Marble, Chad Sprague, Shane Diver, Mark Estock, Hod Henk, Barb Whitman, Pat Swearingen, Kelly Keever, Jana Dillow, Stacey Coon. When summer was almost to an end, the Council had a Back To School swimming party at Staci Sandusky’s home to welcome in the new members. Once school began, the Student Council focused on Homecoming ’87. Tricia Sullivan was in charge of the parade, Leslie Fink and Allison Fletcher headed the Dance Committee, Cody Anderegg selected the Days of the Week, and Alice Bailey and Staci Sandusky organized Cometfest. Thanks to all the Student Council members, Mrs. Clow, and Mr. Griffiths, Homecoming ’87 was a success. Throughout the rest of the year, members attended several District functions including: the Fall Picnic, Hospitality Night, the Fall Workship, and the District Convention. Student Council also profited from running the concession stands during the football and basketball seasons. In the fall, the group presented a dinner theater, serving a dinner of roast beef, baked potatoes, salad, and dessert to over a hundred people and then entertaining them with four plays: Pals; Tell Dorie Not to Cry; Good-bye to the Clown; and Of Poems, Youth, and Spring. Pals was so well received that it went on to become the drama entry in competition for Oakwood High School. The spring production, Neil Simon’s Fools, featured an all-senior cast. The talented cast presented an evening of fun as the teacher, Kevin McClintock, attempted to solve the terminal stupidity of the town of Kulyenchikov. The humorous situation was highlighted with performances by seniors Scott Flannery, Tim Knight, Jeff Osterbur, Staci Sandusky, Beth Sherman, Shelly Slusher, Missy Spencer, Shanna Voorhees, and Jeff Wagers. In the back row are Mrs. Matayo, Gina Grupe, and Cyndi Weise. The school year of ’87-’88 has found our Students Against Driving Drunk chapter take a quiet, yet steady course. From the summer of ’87 when Cyndi Weise and Mary Hays attended Illinois Teen Institute at Allerton Park in Monticello, our group has taken a course of positive prevention. SADD does not encourage teenagers to use drugs but rather encourages and stresses not driving if drugs have been consumed. Our chapter has become more involved with informing students of positive alternatives to choose rather than using drugs. Social activities for our group has included a Christmas party, a Sock Hop, and a county-wide dance at Jubilation. Various local high schools have invited our officers to be guest speakers for meetings and all school assemblies. Our homeroom meetings have offered a variety of guest speakers and topics for discussion. Operation Snowball and Snowflake are two projects SADD is presenting to the Unit 76 district. Each year that SADD is a part of OHS, dreams become realities. Oakwood SADD chapter actively promotes the National SADD motto of “CHALLENGE ’88 . .. They finished third at the Regionals, bringing home their first ever first place medals. Regional winners for the team included Staci Sandusky and Kevin McClintock in dramatic duet acting. Beth Sherman finished first in radio. Beth also garnered a second in extemp speaking. Other Comet winners included Rachel McKinney and Willie Clem, sixth in Humorous Duet Acting; Tony Brazelton, third in Humorous Interpretation; Shanna Voorhees, fourth in Oratorical Declamation; Tony Brazelton, a tie for fifth in Original Comedy; Shelly Slusher, a fifth in Special Occasion Speaking; and Lockie Creason, a third in prose reading and a fifth in verse reading. Perhaps the day’s biggest disappointment belonged to Lockie Creason, who finished first in verse but was knocked to fifth because of a time violation. At sectionals, the team finished sixth overall. Tony Brazelton finished third in Humorous Interpretation, and Beth Sherman finished second in Extemp Speaking. The Speech Team also competed in Drama and Group Interpretation competition this year at Bloomington. The drama team, consisting of Scott Flannery, Kevin McClintock, Staci Sandusky, and Chris Duden was second in Regional competition and advanced to Sectionals at Peoria where they placed seventh. Both Scott and Kevin were unanimous choices for the Regional All Star Cast. Tony Brazelton was also named to the Regional All Star Cast. Everyone enjoyed dressing up for the spirit days such as Crazy day, nerd day, shorts and shades day, “Twinkie Day”, and of course, Purple Power Day. The Comets beat the St. Joe Spartans to a 44-26 roll-over. The Seniors produced the prize-winning float. Alice Bailey (Manager) Go Running Dogs V 1 The “Running Dogs” were the best team in O.H.S. history. They had the fewest losses (14-1) and the highest finish yet in the State Finals (12th). They were Conference Champs as well as County Champs and finished 3rd in the Sectionals. They had the best Amboy finish which was 16th out of 32 teams. The boys recorded excellent times in most of their meets. Jeff Trask and Brian Harmeson were two very talented front runners who were pushed by consistent Ken Gray and freshman Randy Miller. Our 5th spot was changed frequently as a result of good hardworking athletes Nate Howie, Chad Schoolcraft, and Jeff Williamson. Finishing out our squad was MIR Troy Divan and freshman Brad Trankina. They took the name “Running Dogs” and made it work for them. Our K-9’s had a great season, and I was very proud of them. Having all but “Mad Dog” back next year makes the “Top D°S” vefy haPPy- Coach Ray Wittmann 45 Girl’s Cross Country Though the Girls Cross Country team did have its share of problems with injuries, they did manage to get 4th in County and 4th in ICC. They also were able to pull a 13th place finish in Regionals. Though it’s been a difficult year all said they would be returning again next year. The only senior loss will be Teresa Thompson. Next year should find several promising freshmen who will be coming up to join the team. Team members Chris Duden, Kelly Keever, Denise Mauck, Pam Roots and Diane Wagers should provide an experienced nucleus for next year’s team. 46 Varsity The Varsity cheerleaders attended camp this summer. They ended the week with four blue ribbons, one red ribbon, and two awards of excellence. Staci Witmer entered the Gymnastic competition and made it the final five. She was also nominated for All American which took her to Hawaii. There she cheered in the Aloha Bowl over Christmas. While Staci cheered onthe Florida Gators, the rest of the varsity squad competed in the Rossville Tournament cheerleading competition. There they received second place. Finally, in January, the entire varsity squad competed in the Vermillion County tournament, placing third. The old saying, “When you’re hot you’re hot; when you’re not you’re not,” probably best describes the 1988 Comet baseball team. Losing three of their first four games by a total of seven runs, the Comet diamond-men got down to business by winning eleven out of their next thirteen games. A one run victory over highly rated Danville Schlarman, double victories over St. Joe Ogden, and a six run over Cissna Park highlighted this mid-season winning streak. Having defeated Cissna Park nine to seven and Buckly-Loda eight to seven, the Comet squad scored even runs in the top of the seventh 1 inning to defeat Danville Schlarman eight to one, capturing the second regional crown in the school’s history. With momentum again on their side, the Comets then captured their first sectional championship by defeating Collum Tri-Point ten to six | and Momence seven to two. These wins placed the Comet diamondmen in the elite field of eight at the state championships in Springfield. Oakwood’s first opponent was Carmi, a team that entered with a 27-0 record. When the dust had settled at Lamphier Park, the Comets had prevailed with a six to four victory. Now in the state final four, Oakwood had to face Alton-Marquette if they wanted to advance to the championship game. Despite a strong effort, the Cinderella season had come to an end when the Comets were defeated nine to five. Of the 339 teams that started the state tournament, Oakwood was the 337th to be eliminated. In addition to their 18-9 record, their second place conference finish (10-2), and their regional, sectional, and state final four showings, the Comets were led by their captains Brent Vinson, Mike Stanis, and Scott Saults. Be a Sport Together We Are Better In Activities ■■■ i Sadie Sadie Hawkins is a casual dance where the girl gets her chance to ask the guy out. The couples dress alike and have fun. This year’s candidates for Lil’ Abner and Daisy Mae were Mark Estock, Angie Tellier, Eric Burnett, Betsy Liggett, Brian Anderson, Cathy Cannon, Scott Flannery, and Mindy Hobick. Lil’ Abner and Daisy Mae of ’88 were Eric Burnett and Betsy Liggett. Hawkins Swap Day It is very seldom that we get to share our world with the community. Swap Day and our annual Thanksgiving Dinner gives us this opportunity. Swap Day allows parents and students to “swap” places for a day, and Thanksgiving Dinner gives two different generations a chance to be together. Thank you for caring enough to come. Mr. Biehl, Mrs. Meharry, and Mr. Griffiths (1 to r) are shown here doing exactly that. An alternative to chatting in the halls is to go to the Teacher’s Lounge. This is the one room where teachers can get away from their students. The lounge is restricted to Faculty members only — no students are allowed. Some teachers use the lounge to grade papers, to eat, or to just escape from the classroom. Survey done in 1 88 showed that the majority of juniors felt that as a class we are not close, there are too many cliques, and too many little groups talking about someone they hardly know. Are girls really snobs, but pretty, and are guys really jerks? Is this really how we feel? Many juniors sounded as though they would like to be friends with everyone, but no one seems to know how. As a goal, we should give each other a chance, to be a friend, we don’t have to be good friends, just friends. Let’s bring out the best in each other our senior year. Laura Foley Cheese?! The end of one stage of our lives, Were reminiscent of stages past. Soon comes the beginning of the next stage of life, We will be looking forward to many stages more. It all has gone by so fast. It’s not over yet and the end is coming so slow. We long to get away to new and exciting things, To explore the world and find new friends. Forever, we want to hang onto the old and familiar, Never to forget our hometown and old friends. A time of happiness for we have finished something great, Sadness is also here for now is a time of separation. It has been told to us that life is our there waiting, These experiences are our future. For now we go back into our memories, Reliving our old lives we see our past. Rod Henk School Years The end has come It’s here at last. The years we’ve spent Are in the past. The beginning was frightening Yet exciting and new. We all feared the seniors, Were at a loss what to do. Then we were sophomores Slightly more free. We discovered the others Were like you and me. The junior year came And went with the breeze. All that’s left now Are the fond memories. Now we are seniors Wild and free. Still deciding What we want to be? Discovering our interests And pursuing and drives. The time is passing so quickly As we continue our lives. Kenna Saathoff rlr l w
