First of all, the reporters search for the facts and write the stories. Then, each reporter types his story into the computer using a word processing software package. As soon as all the stories are in, the page editors correct mistakes, and “edit stories. Once this process has been completed, the managing editor and Advisor Wright make the final once over to catch any mistakes not previously seen. Now, the technical procedures begin. A member of the staff transmits the stories via computerphone modem to Garfield press in Champaign. Their computer receives the stories and then relays them to an edit-writer. This editwriter takes pictures of the incoming stories. The film from the editwriter is developed and “voila instant copy. Garfield Printing then sends the copy to us to be laid out for the final printing. After layout is completed, the paper is sent to the Rantoul Press where it is printed by a photo offset printer. Some of the staff went to a seminar in the fall learning new ways to set up pages for our book; hopefully this summer two staff members will be able to go to a workshop in Green Castle, Indiana. Our goal is to make each book just a little better than the one before. 1 Alice working very hard on designing her pages. 2. There are varsity and junior-varsity teams; Oakwood also has a freshman-sophomore team, but most other schools do not. Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Clow are the coaches for the team. When most people think of International Club, they think of a group of people who stand around and talk funny. This accusation is untrue. International Club is for those students who feel that learning a new language is an interesting way to learn about other cultures. In order to be a member one must be or must have been a member of a foreign language class. When one is involved in International Club, he or she will be responsible for attending several homeroom meetings. At the first meeting, the club chose its officers. The officers for this year are Tereasa Barnes (representing Spanish) and Staci Disney (representing French). The second meeting was to plan cultural events. The club chose to invite a girl from Argentina to speak at a homeroom meeting and to attend classes for that day. The subject for the next meeting was a fund raising project. The International Club decided to sell Katherine Beich candy in order to raise money for their March 21 trip to Indianapolis. In Indianapolis, the students will visit the Art Museum and Union Station. The sponsors for International Club are Norma Anderson. Spanish and Biology Teacher, and Arlene Borberly. Art-1 Gives students an overall view of the art basics Art-2 Builds upon the information given in Art 1 Art-3 4 For students preparing for future careers in art Oakwood High School has many talented students. At present, the following are the top students currently enrolled in Art classes. Seniors — Chris Cannon, Kelly McCarter, Tom Franks, Darrin King Juniors — Terry Curry, Jeff Welch, Cyndi Weise, Wendy Weddle Shannon Daughtery, and Mrs. Learnard 14 Librarians Each hour of the day, the student librarians can be found behind the desk in the library. These people, all students at Oakwood High School, are selected to help see that the many jobs in the library are completed and that someone is always available to help students find and check out their selections. Although it is quite a responsibility, they are not paid for their time or efforts, except by the thanks of Mrs. Fathauer and the students. The librarians' jobs entail a variety of duties. Responsibilities include checking books in and out, watching for overdue books, seeing that overdue books are returned, filing catalog cards, typing purchase orders for library materials, processing books and magazines as well as filing other materials like newspaper articles, and answering research questions. The student librarians serve a vital function within the school and within the structure of the library. Being a librarian is a much more complicated job than many may suspect and just keeping track of the materials in the library creates a full time job. Their assistance makes it possible for the Oakwood High School library to be one which has proven itself to be a valuable part of the high school. We had only 2 seniors one with experience and a young team but many talented athletes. We won the Bismarck-Henning Invitational Fresh Soph, We finished 5th in the North Vermilion Invitational, 2nd in the Wolva Run, 9th in the St. Joe Invitational. In state competition, we finished 4th in regional, 5th in sectional and 17th in the state finals. We had a dual record of 17-2 and had our second highest state final finish. We were led all season by Brian Harmeson who set 4 new records and finished 40th in the state. Brett Fathauer and Outstanding Freshman Jeff Trask battled for second and third. Our fourth man was Ken Gray who was a steady influence all season. Our fifth man, Alan Maxwell, was a first year senior who gave us the lift we needed to be a competitive team. The rest of our squad, Jeff Williamson, Chad Schoolcraft, Troy Divan, and Nathan- Howie, all contributed to our success. Eric Hedges was injured and missed most of the season. All will be greatly improved, and it should make us a better team next season. We will miss the leadership of our two seniors, but Harmeson, Gray, and Trask will be very capable leaders in our quest to get to the state again. This was a fine group of young men who never gave up on themselves, and with hard work and pride showed the school, the community, and themselves how far dedication could take them. Speeches were presented by class Valedictorian — Tracy Sullivan and Salutatorian — Teresa Barnes. Class history was given by Jill Porter. Diplomas were presented by Mr. Michael Cundiff and Mr. Dennis King. School Board Members; and Dr. James Ellis, Superintendent. Also addressing the assembly were Rev. Dennis Anglin and Rev. Ken Bostwick. 90 Dr. James Ellis Dr. James Ellis, who was raised in this area, attended Diamond Grade School for eight years and then went on to be a graduate from Oakwood High School in 1950. He then attended the University of Illinois and Eastern Illinois University and graduated in 1963 with his Bachelors Degree. Two years later he received his Masters Degree in Education Administration, and, in 1969, an advanced Certificate in Curriculum. He received his Doctorate of Education from Walden University in Naples, Florida in 1971, thus receiving the title of Dr. Ellis. His main goals are to work with the students on extra curricular activities such as dramatics, music, and sportsmanship. He feels being around the students and talking with them achieves a personal goal within himself. 96 Our Principal Faculty Norma Anderson Marla Bauerle Ed Biehl Bill Blair Arlene Borbely Dana Bowyer Debbie Clow Trevor Doughty Tom Flanigan Libby Fathauer Carol Hogg Lori Learnard Brenda Ludwig Marsha Matayo Jan Meharry Rosalynn Mickelson Debra Mills Frank Nixon Mike Nolan Michelle Umbarger Mary Wright Ray Wittman Sandy Webb 101 Jesse Cuxiff. Memories of old, memories of new. Moments alone, and moments we’ve shared. Moments of dismay, and moments we’ve cared. Freshman stupidity, and freshman fear. Freshmen running, to survive the year. Sophomores too cool!, but we still hit the floor. Sophomores only once, in the year of nineteen eighty-four. Juniors How nice to be an upperclassman. Juniors, have an awesome Prom? we certainly can! Seniors, now students of perfection. Seniors, how near it is to Graduation! Moments of sadness, and moments of fun. Times that we lost, and times that we won. Memories of all, memories of few. Memories of old, speculations of new??? By: Jim Verhoeven 142
