Oakwood High The following article appeared in the 1925 ACORN about the school district. “Oakwood Township High School, District 227 was organized at an election held in Muncie, 111., June 5, 1915. The district organized included the greater part of Oakwood Township, and a small part of Catlin Township, and comprises sixty-six sections of land. It is eleven miles in length, six miles in width, and has within its territory the villages of Oakwood, Muncie and Fithian, and the towns of Bronson, Newtown, Glenburn, Brothers Station, and Missionfield. The population of the district at the time of organization was 2,772. An Election was held June 19, 1915, for the por-pose of electing a board of education for the district, to consist of a President and six members, resulted in the election of O.W. Michael, President; C.E. Lettell, Eli Fox, J.S. Purnell, George P. Vinson, Thomas Oakwood, and Dr. P.H. Fithian. An election was held in Muncie, July 31, 1915, for the purpose of selecting a site for the school building, and the present site was chosen.” Now Oakwood Township High School is part of Community Unit 76. Unit 76 was organized at an election held on July 1, 1976. The district as organized included all of Oakwood Township and Pilot Township, and portions of Blount, Catlin, Danville, and Vance Townships. It is 91.83 square miles, and has within its territory the villages of Oakwood, Muncie, and Fithian, and the areas of Diamond, Hillery, and Collison. The population of the district as of the 1980 census was 7,077. The last election of school board members was November 8, 1983. The board members include: Dean Covington, President; James J. Davis, Vice President; Michael J. Cundiff; Dennis King; Robert Marble; Gene Megenhardt; and Harry Plotner.
